Spiral Knights Catch-All: F2P MMO action-rpg from Three Rings

Great to have you!

The SK Wiki maintains a list of guilds, would we be interested in adding our to it? Or are we too secretive for that?

More selective than secretive.

Yeah people do good to get a vibe from the site or often from playing with us on a random team in various games and thinking "hey those gwj guys are decent folks" and then come here and investigate. We don't need advertising.

I'm playing too. IGN: Shonuph.

Well, there was one incident involving Oilers, a fire vial, and maniacal laughter, but the whole thing was an accident... kinda.

Edit: Wasn't so funny when we drew the Oiler/fire arena tonight. Man, that was brutal.

Yea, that was the arena that caused me to spend 1k last time too. Sigh, fire = bad.

Wow sorry guys. Had no idea that sh*t even existed. First time I haven't had fun in Spiral Knights.

Even though we were repeatedly massacred, I was laughing by the end. What kind of sadistic motherf*cker built that arena? I mean really, why would you do that?

I am NOT here. I am NOT playing an MMO. I am definitely NOT playing Spiral Knights. I am NOT using a character called Rezgod. I would never break my commandment about MMOs just because Steam has lowered the barrier for entry and this particular one has been worked on by Ian from MacHall/Three Panel Soul. Don't be ridiculous.
(But I do have a new TF2 hat and this nagging curiosity about how the heck to progress... is it just heat? Do I need a recipe?)

To progress you need a series of higher star equipment. For "level" two you need all 2 star equipment and a certain amount of tier 1 dungeons completed (15).

Progressing slowly. Have 3* equips (except my helmet). Have 2 4* recipes waiting to craft. A couple setbacks and re-evaluations of my defense have prevented me from starting on 4* stuff.

The helmet was something I changed, along with my shield. I had 3* of both, then realized I had some gaps in my defense that were going to get worse as I got up to 4/5* gear. Better to change now than later. As such I'm looking for a cheap Elemental Hood 3* recipe, if anyone does runs tonight/tomorrow keep an eye out.

So my upgrade path at 5* now looks like Divine Veil (elemental/shadow, fire/shock/curse, and +moderate fiend dmg), Barbarous Thorn Shield (normal/piercing and +med sword dmg), and then either Vog Cub Coat (normal/elemental, fire, and +med sword attack speed) or the Skolver Coat (normal/piercing, freeze, and +med sword damage). Torn on the armor because I'd love to fill my freeze vulnerability but I think the attack speed might be more beneficial than the damage boost. 2 med boosts would put me pretty close to the cap though right? Thoughts?

The other debate is with my sword. From what I'm reading the Cold Iron Carver/Vanquisher line might actually be worse than the easily purchasable Ascended Calibur/Leviathan line. Sadly I assumed rarer=better and spent the money on the 4* Cold Iron Recipe already. Stuff I'm reading is maybe 20-30% less damage for Cold Iron, and just barely better on Undead despite the bonus. Also that the Cold Iron charge attack radius or knockback is smaller than the Calibur/Leviathan line. That kb has saved my ass several times already so I'd hate to lose it. Any of our more advanced players have experience with one or the other?

I have an Ascended Calibur at the moment, the charge is quite slow, so I have yet to find much use out of it.

I'm running

Dusker cloak (Normal, piercing, freeze)
Dusker cap (Normal, piercing, freeze)
Horned Owlite shield. (Fire, Shock)

I may need to trinket up shadow/poison other resists, or change out one of the Dusker set.

Edit:Oh, if anyone runs across the fiery pepperbox recipe in dungeon if you grab it, I'll pay for it. Thanks.

Yeah looking at trinkets, and assuming the bars are right (which we can't assume if leviathan/CIV reports are true)... they don't give nearly as much resist as armor/helmet. And since there currently isn't any set bonus for matching, I think everyone is probably better off to mix up their two pieces.

Gotta be kidding me. Monster Balance update today, after the crap we went through last night.

Bold for emphasis.

Red Rovers and Gremlin Scorchers

Oilers

- Oil burn time reduced 66%
- Movement speed reduced
- 'Oil dash' attack removed
- Oil deposit count on death reduced
- Oil deposit count on movement reduced

Quicksilvers

- Reduced shock time
- Reduced movement speed during shock time
- Shock status power and chance reduced

Phantoms

- Inactive period after death increased
- Health reduced

Wolvers and Devilites

- Reduced rate at which they can perform a dodge maneuver

Zombies

- Melee range (one handed swipe attack) reduced

Status Conditions

- Maximum duration of shock spasm has been reduced
- Defense debuff during shock spasm has been removed

That is hilarious... really.

Needed though, that fight was rediculous.

My thoughts exactly.

I really didn't see a problem with the flamethrowers. They weren't hard to avoid before. Just wait until the flame comes at you and flank them.

Does burn half as long mean burn time or burn length? Because playing last night they looked way shorter on the line of flame.

Agreed that those were some of the easier things out of all that was changed. Especially since you could very easily block and survive a couple of flamethrower attacks as you moved out of the way. The one from gun puppies were a little tougher as you can't block as many hits from them, but still even easier because the puppy doesn't move.

Another patch.

Steam Account Conversion
* We have added the ability to convert accounts created on the web site to Steam accounts.
* Be aware you do not have to do this, this is only for those who wish to do so.
* This will allow you to log on automatically using the Steam client as well as to take advantage Steam features such as achievements, voice chat, and invites.
* You can only convert one web account over to your Steam account. Make sure you choose the right web account and Steam account as this cannot be undone.
* If you have already created a knight using your Steam account, you must ensure that no more than three knights exist between that account and your web account.
* Everything from your web account will be transferred to your Steam account. Don't worry about something being left behind.
* You will no longer be able to log into the game using your web account, but you may still use it to access the forums and wiki.
* All further energy purchases must be made through the in-game Steam Wallet as you will not be able to log into the web account.

How to Convert to Steam:
* Install Spiral Knights through Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/99...)
* Start Spiral Knights from Steam. It will automatically bring you to character selection or creation for your Steam account.
* Click on the Back button in the lower left corner, or if you can't see that button, hit ESC and log off.
* Uncheck the Use Steam Account check box.
* Enter your Spiral Knights web account name and password.
* You will be prompted if you are sure that you wish to transfer your web account to the Steam account. If you confirm to convert it will complete and you will immediately be logged into the Steam account instead.

Emberlight
* Brinks has arrived in Emberlight, eager to collect your tokens.

Sounds like the conversion combines your accounts. Neat.

I really like what they are doing with this.

I do wish there was the option of steam friending people through the game though.

Got my first bit of 4* gear crafted this afternoon, my Dark Thorn Shield.

Got recipes for a couple more. Slowly but surely, getting there.

Nice

When it rains it pours. My 4* helmet, armor, and gun were all for sale. Thanks to Hanta loaning me 1500 crowns, I was able to buy them all.

Now I just need to farm energy to craft them for a few days.

In response to Stele

Alright where to begin.

If you haven't got that elemental gear yet I can craft it. Assuming you still want it.

The best advice I can give you is this:

#1 Try out the different weapons at low stars while they are cheap.

#2 I suggest making a decision between Swords, guns or bombs.
A. Once you've made that decision work on collecting one of each damage type (for swords normal, piercing, elemental, shadow).
B. Pick a set of armor that works with your weapon of choice.
C. Do solo runs with armor and weapon of choice to learn the play style of said weapon/equipment.

I started down the path of full cobalt armor with a sword and gun and bomb. Now the Calibur and it's bigger brothers are "normal", which means you'll do average damage against everything and never have to worry about resists or weaknesses but you're not going to be blowing up monsters like they're bushes.

I made the decision to go completely sword, no guns, no bombs. With no guns or bombs to bother with I invested in 4 swords.

Calibur > Leviathan Blade (Normal Damage, med attack speed, knock back with charge)
Snarble Barb > Barbarous Thorn Blade (piercing damage, fast)
Nightblade > Acheron (shadow damage, fast)
Sealed Sword > Divine Avenger (Nature damage, slow, knock back without charge)

This will take a while of course, but I'm already demolishing everything because I can go after their weakness.

For armor I'm working my way up to a full Vog Cub Coat/Cap and a Barbarous Thorn Shield. This makes my swords even more powerful.

I find that if you play smart then resists aren't really too big a thing to worry about with swords. It's all about timing and knowing how each minion fights. I think resist gear like the Elemental items can help but are likely more useful to gunners and bombers. On top of that I believe that buying pieces of different armors to mix and match might work, but though you'd have coverage from all damage types you wouldn't have strong defense in any type. Learning the monsters, how they fight and how to counter them will help you more than any armor.

What ever you do, don't go into a level with only one weapon that does one type of damage (other than "normal") I had some guy follow me into a tier III level filled with wolves. All he had was an elemental sword so he was doing 1/2 damage at best. All he really accomplished was leaching heat and items off of me while making all the monsters harder to kill.

Are you carrying 2 or 3 weapons into the field? I haven't paid any cash, yet, so I haven't bought the extra slots. My current 2* set is:

Calibur (normal)
Blaster (normal)
Jelly Shield (stun/sleep)
Wolver Coat (freeze)
Wolver Cap (freeze)

I like being able to switch between a sword for close stuff and a gun for ranged (particularly when I've taken heavy damage, I'll hang back in the fight and gun until I've healed up enough for close fighting again). But I might consider going all guns for fun.

I plan to take either the coat or cap to the vog set, and the other to the skolver set, so I get fire and elemental protection.

Major downsides is no variety of damage types, and no shadow protection.

The thorn shield looks pretty good, but I don't know that I want to hunt the snorbolax that many times for it.

Yeah I like having the Calibur and the Ice Alchemer both so far. The gun has some nice ricocheting bullets. Someday I might get a Shadow Alchemer too for enemies that are strong to elemental. Or maybe that shadow sword mentioned.

But there are times, especially arenas and danger rooms, where it's much safer to just kite things around in circles with my gun. Too useful to give up.

Thanks for the offer. At the point it looks like I have everything I need for crafting my own 4* gear, except energy and crowns. Going to take a few days to build that back up. If you want to donate either to the "get stele's equipment upgraded fund" you're welcome to do that.

Would love to do full Jelly King runs with the group but I was under the impression my 3* gear probably wouldn't hold up to that.

I bought the starter pack. It's a pretty good deal and I have fun playing the game, so whats $20? At least thats my justification, I've paid more for games I ended up hating.

I carry 4 swords with me.

Currently my setup is:

Ascended Calibur
Avenger
Silent Nightblade
Twisted Snarble Barb

Ash Tail Coat
Ash Tail Cap
Twisted Targe

Pretty sure the first time I did the JK I was in either 3 star or a mix of 3 and 4 and had some fairly well equiped people with me. Honestly I think the last level or 2 before you get to JK are harder, or at the very least more annoying than the actual boss.

If either one of you wants help with a snorbolax or Jelly king run just ask(Randomtasks).
