Recommend me a new mouse.

I really like my G500 in the Logitech family. I think I've gone from the MX518 to the G5 to the G500. Still in the same shape family.

I can't remember what came with different generations, but I really like the ability to unlock the wheel and let it spin free on long web pages, I like the wheel tilt feature (I use it sometimes in games for weapons switch). And I like the three buttons on the thumb vs two.

And I've finally started to really use the software to customize mouse settings game to game. I do some crazy stuff like binding "play/pause" on desktop to that middle thumb button that I don't want to use in game, so I'll switch it to a bindable keyboard for game use with the software.

I really am tempted every time I see a sale on the R.A.T. 7 mouse, though. But mainly because that thing looks so crazy.

I've had a lot of mice. A couple of old old Razer mice, I think the Diamondback and one other one, maybe the Boomslang. I'm not sure on the names. I didn't keep either one for very long. I've had two versions of the MX518, two versions of the G5, the G500, the Microsoft Habu, and I'm currently using the Razer DeathAdder Black Edition.

MX518: Was excellent, but I wanted higher sensitivity settings at the time.
Both G5's: Great feeling mice, but something just not quite right with the tracking.
MS Habu: A collaborative effort from Microsoft and Razer. Ergonomically it was excellent. Razer's software for it was sh*t. Tried to sell it for $20 for a while. Eventually threw it away.
G500: Great, except that the huge pads on the bottom made a lot of noise sliding around on my favorite mousepads. (Steelseries SX, Razer Ironclad) I still carry this one around in my laptop bag.
Razer DeathAdder Black Edition: I have no complaints. It's quieter with my mousepad, tracking is super almost unbelievably smooth, and it's the most comfortable mouse I've ever had. The almost weird feeling soft touch plastic surface that covers basically the entire mouse is awesome and should be on every mouse ever.

I just bought my first "fancy" mouse and it arrived 2 days ago. I figured I'd start out in the shallow end of the pool since I've never gamed with a mouse that had anything besides the left and right buttons and a scroll wheel so I wasn't sure how much I'd actually use the extra functionality. For a little under $20 I picked up a Microsoft Sidewinder X3. Maybe one day I'll work up to the stuff you guys are using.

Thank you all for the input. As I mentioned, I know the Logitech mice are good, but they are all very similar in shape and feel. I want to test the waters with a slightly new design.

That's great to hear, as that is the exact mouse I have been eying. To be honest, I came to this thread leaning toward that mouse.

I've been a big fan of Razer mice for a long time. What can I say? I'm a slut for sexy-looking toys.

Thanks to a combination of discounts, coupons, and rebates, I got my G500 for $30, which is very reasonable. Keep your eyes open for Newegg sales and the like. You can pick one up for a little more than that Sidewinder with little guilt over any functionality you find excessive not being used.

I'm not a big fan of Razer mice, as I've had three fail within 18 months. I would however recommend the Xai from Steelseries. It's pricey (at about $100, I happened to get it on sale at Christmas thanks to the missus), but worth every penny. You can adjust the DPI in increments of 1 without driver software, which is huge for me.

Freaky. I've owned four (including the one I use at home and the one I use at work now) different Razer mice over the years with no problems. Bad luck is bad.

Second or third the Razer DeathAdder Black. Best mouse in a long time.

Left, or right handed? Budget?

Right handed. Average sized hands. $80 or less for budget. I know I can get a decent mouse for less, but some of those Razer mouses intrigue me, and they're a bit more expensive.

I am a big Razer fan. I love my Diamondback I am on my second one, coffee claimed the life of one some years ago. Lamentably it will be my last as that model is no longer in production.

The symmetry of the mice is something I love. The buttons have good resistance and click. I have not monkeyed around with DPI settings, but I do use all 7 buttons.

My big Female Doggo is that more and more games are not supporting mice with more than 3 buttons. Even if you re-program buttons for key strokes, the game may not recognize them.

I like their software for programming Macros onto individual buttons.

The Mx518 looks almost identical to my current mouse. It has worked great, but I think I want to try something slightly different. The G500 looks pretty nice.

Yeah, the 518 is basically an improved 510, except that instead of the 2 buttons bracketing the mousewheel for scroll up/scroll down, the 2 buttons there allow you to increase/decrease mouse sensitivity, then there's a 3rd button that defaults to swapping between apps. The current version of the 518 also revamped the gliders, putting a really wide one at the front and back, with a third smaller one on the left edge.

I have a Razer DeathAdder which is fabulous.

Before that, I was on a Razer Diamondback 3G, which remains my secondary system mouse. Also love it.

Before that, I had an MX518. Also a superb mouse, and one I just bought for my team members at work. But I prefer the feel of the Razer mice myself.

All three of those mice are hard to go wrong with. The MX518 is the largest, while the Diamondback is a smaller, ambidextrous form. The DeathAdder sits nicely between the two forms.

I ordered the DeathAdder Black on Friday. Glad to see some more positive remarks on it. Thanks again.

My Logitech G500 has been having some contact issues causing double clicks lately. So, I used it as an excuse to order a new mouse! I don't really like Razer mice, but rather than sticking with a Logitech mouse, I went with the SteelSeries Sensei Raw. Really like the idea of the whole mouse being rubberized because my hands tend to get a bit clammy with smooth surfaced mice. While it might not have quite as large a profile as the G500, I think it'll be close enough for my hand size to be comfortable.

Also, my SteelSeries mechanical keyboard, glass SteelSeries mousepad, and mouse will match now.

Anyone ever tried a Sensei mouse?

I've been looking to get out of the basic mouse lately. I use a Logitech M310.at work an M325 at home. The former is serviceable but the latter is abominable. With the M325, middle-clicking is as likely to result in scrolling or panning as actually clicking. I flatten my index finger go minimize the likelihood but it's still dumb.

GardenNinja had great things to say about the Microsoft 5000, and RoughNeckGeek and boogle pimped Logitech g500(s) (though boogle mentioned another I can't recall).

I went shopping but Microcenter didn't have (a) any mice on display nor (b) any 5000's anyway. ~$60 I'd s bit rich for a mouse for me, given I play Excel and a very little bit of games.

How does the Sensei hold up as a workhorse mouse? Are the fore/back side buttons well-resistive? Does the wheel give good feedback? I'll end up buying online and would live to avoid returns.

EDIT TO ADD: Another thing is I notice most corded end up slightly pulling the mouse with the weight of the cord. It's low-level but nonetheless annoying. Will this mouse's heft, of another's, help with this? I've only started using wireless mice recently and for their other compromise s the fact they don't do this is significant.

I will let you know when it shows up tomorrow. I've used the Logitech G500 and the previous model (G5?) for the last 10 years of so and really liked them, so my comparison will be based on those and the Razer Copperhead I had for a bit.

Just looked at the current iteration of the Logitech G5/G500 style which is the G500s. Damn that's a fugly mouse. The Sensei Raw Rubberized is much better looking in my opinion.

The G500 wasn't all that terrible looking, but it wasn't particularly interesting:

I've never noticed this with my G500. I make sure the cord has plenty of slack on the desk and zip tie it to something, though. I use about half the weights, so the substantial weight of the mouse probably does help with this.

I do have this problem with mice at work, so I know what you're talking about.

Tuffalo's got a good point on this that it depends on how you have your cord setup. I have mine wrapped around my center channel speaker with a lot of slack on the mouse side.

I used to have a mouse pad that even had a little hook on it to hold the mouse cable for this reason.

I've really never noticed it.

I agree the new G500s is pretty ugly graphically. Supposedly those lines and the new surface is grip related to help with the problem you were describing earlier. Not having one, I can't tell you how effective it is.

I really still like the G500 style, as I'm hooked on the three thumb buttons. BF4 for instance, I use one for crouch, one for prone, and one for reload. I'd hate to move one of those back to an awkward key on the keyboard.

Well, the Sensei Raw is awesome! Love it. It slides across the huge glass Steelseries mousepad that I have much better than the G500 did. The size feels good. I love the look of it and the simplicity to it. The side buttons will take some getting used to. They don't feel great yet. Anyways, it's a really nice mouse and I highly recommend it.

It makes me feel like playing Half Life 2. Does that make sense?

What about something gaudy like this Steelseries WoW Gaming Mouse? The shape looks decent, it has more buttons, the scroll wheel has some real grip it seems, and I might like having some dragons-on-a-silk-shirt feel around my desk. That and it's a little cheaper than tuffalobuffalo's choice, though not by a whole lot.

In rat 7 big the big one yesterday. The grass plate that clicks and makes the connection broke. I e-mailed them to see if there is anything that can be done. I'll be using an old house until I find a replacement.

You weren't kidding about the gaudy aspect. The size of that looks more in line with the G500, so I imagine it's a very comfortable mouse.

I saw on that page that they have a Diablo III branded one that's less gaudy. It's also the same design as the Sensei but only $25.00.

Yeah I saw that one, too. It looks blander than the Sensei if only by virtue of the Diablo III branding being boring. Then I started looking at the g500s again. If I could grab that on a sale I think I'd be done. Failing that, the Steelseries WoW mouse without branding, if I can find it. I think I'd rather go to the Sensei than the Diablo III mouse.

Blah.

Lol, no, typing on a phone is all.
Let me clarify...

My rat 7 bit the big one yesterday. The brass plate that clicks and makes the connection broke. I e-mailed them to see if there is anything that can be done. I'll be using an old mouse until I find a replacement.

My G500 started doing the double click thing at a year old. It was the... sixth? Logitech device to either fail beyond usefulness or outright die on me that I've had in recent years. I went to a Razer Deathadder and haven't looked back. Dying devices and a lack of support for some of their older devices (Logitech Wingman Force... C'mon, this thing was ridiculously nice AND expensive. Write some gorram drivers) have soured me completely on Logitech.

Have you looked at the Rival? IMO it's the best mouse Steelseries has ever made.

*Caveat: I don't buy laser mice anymore. The last one I bought was the G500. I'll never buy another one until someone finally makes a laser sensor without some amount of inherent positive/negative acceleration. It's still never been done, no matter what they put on the box.

That's a gorgeous mouse. Trying to keep the budget down but I can rummage FatWallet and such.

That Death Adder is pretty dope, too.

Oh gross, the price went up. It was $40 when it came out. Bummer.

My Logitech Performance MX just bit it too. Same "double-click" problem. I'm asking for a warranty replacement, thing was just over a year old. If they give it to me great, if not, I'm switching brands. The left-mouse issues are endemic and logitech just doesn't seem to care. It's too bad, because I love the ergonomic design of those things and no other company has a similar style.
