Gods & Heroes - Released on STEAM

Havent seen much buzz for this game. I figured I have paid more for a bad meal so I picked it up. Some of the concepts - estates, minion system seemed interesting. Anyhow, if anyone else is playing - let me know. 39.99 on STEAM with the typical first month thrown in. Once it downloads - I'll post my opening "n00b" impressions.

Given my inital headache just trying to get the account set up and the need for a 2 GB patch at the start - you may want to avoid this

Well my initial impressions were cut short due to the server coming down unannounced for maintenance. I played the first few quests with a Gladiator character. It is readily apparent that the game is still unfinished. Missing tutorial text - standard questions marks come up a la WoW, but no text inside them. The graphics are dated - not as cartoony as WoW, but not nearly as refined as Rift. Character customization is limited, but on par with WoW. Combat is meh, not as actiony as I expected - Age of Conan still reigns supreme for combat. Character classes are limited to four choices - post Rift that's pretty poor. The audio is sub par and the animations are stilted. The game strikes me as a poor WoW clone that may have been well received in 2007 for the Roman flavor. There may be more game tucked inside and I will play past the starter area to see how the Estates and Minions are implemented. Also, server population is negligible in the starter area. A word of caution in the drop down menu for billing - they try to sneak in a 3 month sub, but click the arrow and a one month sub is on top, but not the default. Finally, as it stand right now there is no way to cancel the game online that I can tell; that "feature" hasnt been implemented yet.

Yeah, this was being made years ago, if is the same then it is already dated, unfortunately!

I had high hopes for this one back in the day. But, they released far too quickly after reviving development for me to feel comfortable buying it. When they shut it down a few years ago the report from beta testers was it was *real* rough around the edges. There's no way they could have polished it up and got it in fighting shape in so little time.

It's too bad, a Roman themed MMO with gods and epic heroes would really hit the spot.

Spy, you know that despite only having 4 classes, one of the core features of the game is collecting hirelings. You can have up to 3 I believe at high levels. For instance in the some of the screen shots you may see a cyclops, but that isn't a monster, that guy fights with you! I believe most of the hirelings are humans that you can level up and equip. But supposedly there are special hirelings that are quest rewards for instance.

Its really a shame that this game lags so far behind in the polish department so that it never had a chance to catch up.

I have not played it recently but the impressions I've read seem to coincide with my impressions when I was in beta all those years ago.

Yeah I understand the minion system - I am rolling with two right now. However, the game is just bad - I am going to gut through some of the early stuff just to justify my purchase, but it is pretty poor. It will either be defunct or F2P in less than 6 months is my current prediction.

Oh, my bad... I thought it was already f2p... yikes!

I played for a few hours during the open beta weekend. I really enjoy the *idea* of the game, but it is very rough. I saw the missing pop-up tutorial text and this was the weekend before headstart.

I love pet classes so I really wanted to like this for the minion system, but it really was too rough to justify buying it. I made it to my (ruined) estate, and it was a very cool idea, but considering I am lucky to have 2-3 hours a week to play anything, spending time running around my estate not actually playing is not something I want to do.

I might try it again in a month or 2.

Definitely a wait until the reviews/sales/f2p kick in for me. I love Roman empire settings but I'm cautious for all the reasons stated above.

I wouldn't pay full price like I did on a whim. Maybe wait until one of those free weekend or it drops to 9.99 or something. I have been completely underwhelmed. No early sense of adventure like most MMOs, no stay up to the wee hours type feeling engendered. Just meh!

Thanks for the initial impressions Spy. I was tempted with the lull in games right now but I think trying out F2P games like Forsaken World might be a better bet.

Darn it, I wish Diablo3, The Old Republic, or Guild Wars 2 would get here already. With my luck all 3 will be released in the same month.

I hear you on that. And you can probably include TERA on that list. I don't know if its anything special or not, but if it were released now, it could be a decent way to pass the time at least.
