First Green Lantern trailer released

The basis of the character is that he got a magical ring from a purple alien that lets him create anything he wants out of green energy, and you're worried about where he keeps hi wallet?

Yes, I am. Terribly worried. I'm not sleeping.

Or I'm freaked out by what appears to be a 5 inch depression between his collarbones and his neck.

How does this green skin hide his junk?

It knows when his identity needs to be hidden.

Well, to be fair, Green Lantern is at least about green energy, while Thor is about white power.

I laughed the appropriate amount for this joke. A lot.

New footage and I'm starting to get pretty excited:

Overall, wow, looks like it could be really good.

But the post-processing/CGI stuff looks rough in all of the Oa scenes, even at 360p. I can only hope that's not the finished product.

Why if it isn't Mark Strong as the dude whose name I cannot remember but is red skinned and important to the story.

Mark Strong is always watchable, but I can't get behind someone who can manifest anything his mind envisions, and the best he can come up with of is green fists.

I liked Jordan's green minigun.

Abin Sur.

I have to admit, I started to get tingles when the battery taught him the oath and his eyes continually grew brighter as it proceeded.

Actually, Mark Strong is listed as Sinestro

I'm not a lore-master or anything, but from what I've read about the storylines, Hal Jordan was a powerful Lantern, but not the most creative. He was chosen because of his fearlessness, daring and strength as exemplified in his career as a test pilot. There were later Lanterns - one an architect and one an artist - that weren't as 'tough' as Hal, but were more creative with their powers.

Whoops! Only know his face, not his name. Didn't recognize him in the video so I figured Grenn was referring to Abin Sur since he should know who Sinestro is.

Doubling back on this thread as I seemed to have missed it. I loved the Wondercon footage, but I'm also a huge Green Lantern nerd. Read it when I was a kid and still read it. It's starting to look like it has a chance of being good. Who is the big yellow/brown villain? Is that supposed to be Parallax? I hope it's not supposed to be the Manhunters. That would annoy my nerd sensibilities like nothing else.

A comic shop switched locations to my neighborhood last week. They're a few minutes walk away now. Went in on Saturday because they were giving away free GL shirts. They were specifically for the movie, though. So, it says "In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night" on the front and has the movie logo and release date on the back. It's actually a pretty nice shirt. Very soft. Also, it's a small. But it was long enough so I wore it anyway. Fits as well as some of my shrunken Mediums.

Anyway, guy at church saw the shirt and asked me a few questions since he really didn't follow the trailer. Mainly, he didn't get what the aliens were so I had to give him a quick rundown. Basically explained the Corps as a galactic police force, similar to how they do in the comics. Wonder if this has been a confusing point for others.

This thing is getting hammered on Rotten Tomatoes.

I kind of saw this coming. I wonder how much of it is Green Lantern just being a thing that's hard to translate into a mass market movie.

Or, how much of it is people finally starting to wake up to the fact that the major DC heroes (save one) are bland and uninteresting?

JK, but I never liked DC characters except Batman anyway, so I never expected this to be any good. I had hopes because of a soft spot in my heart for that dreamy Ryan Reynolds, though. Plus, I'll throw in the obligatory "IT'S FRGGIN' CG BODYPAINT!" only because I've been repeating that since I saw the first trailer.

It's not that the characters are boring, so much as they are often written into boring and bland scripts/stories. With the slew of comic movies and reboots, the public is getting tired of origin stories. So if you're going to do one, you really need writers who bring their A game. But Hollywood seems to think that flashy CGI effects can make up for writing.

We are thinking of seeing this this weekend but boy those reviews make it sound like a stinker. I haven't seen X-men First Class yet so maybe I should try to get the guys to switch to that. It is doing really well in reviews.

This is why they need a Black Adam movie.

Not surprised by the reviews. I have low expectations for this one but don't care. It's a Green Lantern movie!

That no one knows who Green Lantern is probably doesn't help either: 'Green Lantern' To Fulfill America's Wish To See Lantern-Based Characters On Big Screen

The more trailers I saw for this movie the lower my interest went. I just can't stand the kind of CGI that screams CGI combined with live actors. I think if they did a Green Lantern movie in the style of a Final Fantasy Spirits Within or the more recent Appleseed animes it could've been great. For me, the effects in this movie combined with the actors is just too jarring and, well, comical.

Saw a midnight show. I enjoyed it. It's very CG but it's done well for the most part. A good intro movie for a potential franchise. Ranking the comic book movies so far this year it'd be:

1. X-men 1st class
2. Green Lantern
3. Thor

So far this year's superhero movies have been better than I expected. Hope Cap't America continues the trend.

3D or 2D? My inclination is always 2D, but it seems this movie could take advantage of the tech.

I just saw the midnight show as well. 2D, I saw thor in IMAX 3D and ... the additional $7.50 just isn't worth it IMO. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of 3D.

I really like the show and compared with Thor, I think Green Lantern was a much better origin story. I think most of the bad reviews are from people who have never read a comic book. They all make the plot sound dumb and done time and time again. Newsflash, 90% of all superhero origins are similar so if you can't get past it, don't review them.

Thor was "unique" because he came from Asgard and they took a very shakespearean view on life in Asgard. Which I'll admit was different and good. But for us geeks, Green Lantern does the world of OA, introduces Sinestro and the guardians. So awesome and it just can't be done without CGI. Blue alliens? Purple alliens? Manifiest anything you will into reality? You find a way to do it without CGI. But make no mistake, this is a summer pop-corn movie which is just fine and dandy with me.

I'm more worried about Captain America. Set in WW2? The only thing he has on his side is super strength and a shield? As origins go, I'll take Green Lantern anyday.

I saw the midnight show and I thought it was terrible at best and laughably bad at worst. So much of it looked "fake" and CGI that it takes me out of the world. I think it's Spider-Man 3 levels of terrible. Really, really disappointed because I want a JLA movie.

I will be taking my sons to a matinee of GL this weekend. If it's purely a popcorn flick I will consider this a win.

Another massive waste of a great opportunity.
