Duke Nukem Forever Catch-All

I just want to read a complete, brutal postmortem on the whole project. I am kind of curious as to how much Gearbox actually ended up contributing to it.

I read the game was pretty much done by the time Gearbox got hold of it, but they needed to do the console ports.

I heard the game engine and such itself was done, but not all the levels. If the first half of the game is loaded with interactive stuff and happens to be more creative, and then the second half is bland, I'd imagine the second half was rushed together.

In which case, saying Duke will be back "real soon" is...yeah.

I might go into the GameStop tomorrow and move my reservation money to Ocarina of Time 3DS, then. I have plenty of other games to play.

(Note: chances are I'll probably get DNF just for the sheer curiosity and spectacle of it, just because I'm dumb like that).

That's the #1 reason I hear from everyone on their opinion of buying the game. So...maybe we're all dumb?

I'm looking to see what else is scheduled to release on Tuesday, and Duke's competition is:

- Alice: Madness Returns
- Record of Agarest War
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon

And that's really it. And...I don't know if any of those games are really going to measure up better.

In fact, the next game I know will be worth it is Earth Defense Force in July, but I don't know if I can have a GameStop gift card in my pocket that long.

This is an unfortunate scenario.

-Pick the next game in the future you definitely want, note it's release date.
-Find someone you trust, give them the card and tell them not to give it back to you until that date.

or

-Self control, work on pile, buy a game you overlooked before at a cheaper price, etc.

Dungeon Siege 3 and Ocarina of Time on the 3DS are also out next week unless I'm mistaken (though the former did NOT demo well on the PC).

I'm really looking forward to Alice actually - for the asthetics and world they've created if nothing else.

Thanks for taking one for the team, stevenmack. I'll definitely be waiting for the Christmastime deep discount on Steam.

Or I'll just replay DN3D.

I played the Dungeon Siege 3 demo on Xbox, and it played well enough. I don't know anything about playing on PC anymore, but it definitely felt like an old PC style RPG game. Just with real 3D graphics instead of 2-D isometric view or something.

It's fun, but not $60 fun for my tastes.

All good ideas. I know I'm grabbing Ocarina of Time 3DS, but for some reason its price seems insignificant enough I don't need a gift card.

I'm bad when it comes to spending money wisely and vidija games, but this summer will be empty enough that it'll at least slow down. I just need to avoid the Amazon sales. Nonetheless, will likely get DNF, and will likely lend it to friends so they don't have to pay money for it.

Having not played the game, I don't have the context, but it looks like that topless woman is suffering/beyond saving. The punching her out is a bit harsh, but is this really all that different from the scene in Aliens when Ripley kills the woman stuck to the wall with an egg in her stomach, asking Ripley to kill her?

What's funny is Croteam totally aped Duke with their Serious Sam franchise.

Looks like they out-Duked Duke.

I've read people on other boards defending DNF, saying it's supposed to be retro-cheesy 90's throwback fun. But everything I've seen just looks tired, juvenile and forced.

I'll stick with the upcoming Serious Sam 3 for my over the top alien shooting.

What sickens me more than anything is that she is moaning in pseudo-pleasure. See also Hentai tentacle porn. Impregnated victims in Aliens beg to be put down as their insides are ripped up. They are not acting like they enjoy it on some level.

I am upgrading my dislike of this game to loathing. I must stop reading this thread because I will think less of anyone who posts here saying they like the game. I'm very sorry to say that and I hate to piss on anyone's fun but I'm revolted. I'm sitting here at my desk with a lump in my stomach and I have to correct frequent typos because my hands are shaking.

F*** Gearbox. They lost a customer. Borderlands 2 is on boycott and I may chuck 1 out of spite.

Sickens you? Or challenges your pre-conditioned, false beliefs about what is and is not, in fact, torture porn!?

DNF is reprising an old homage/gag from Duke Nukem 3D, which was replete with Aliens-esque, goo-slathered, infected women in need of mercy-killing (links probably NSFW). Not that that makes it any more tasteful or decent. I'm just pointing out that this sort of thing is to be expected of the franchise.

edit: gains makes a good point about the moaning and gyrating. I think, though, that Duke Nukem 3D's nude, suggestively-posed women were nearly as tasteless, given the technical constraints of the day.

I was reading a comment from SA earlier (which I now can't find) that highlighted how DN3D was great and appropriate at the time for it's pig cops, it's characters just being part of the world (even if they were strippers), and how that tied into the whole action hero parody/stereotype, that Rodney King and the LA riots were still reasonably fresh in people's minds, and more, but that DNF pretty much throws away any relevancy DN3D had.

How the hell did that make it past QA? That is really disturbing. I wasn't planning on buying the game anyways, but that is really messed up.

Is that confirmed what is happening?

I'd been waiting for the RPS take. In short, the game is confused, contrived, and humorless.

A someone who's actually played through that section....sort of, I guess? It's implied that the girls are impregnated but it's all already happened by the time you get there (and by an Aliens style beastie to the face method rather than anything more seedy, as they critters try it on with your own face as well..making them considerably less sexist than the rest of the game ).

At NO point is there any hentai nonsense going on.

It's *IS* a little on the uncomfortable side to play through though, especially as the women are really only just scenery dressing with the occasional "funny" sound byte or used as creature spawners (literally). You only directly interact with two of the girls at the end of that stage and it's as cheaply handled as you would expect.

OH, and you can kill them to stop the critters 'hatching' but I did that once by accident and...frankly it was rather disturbingly modelled, so I made sure not to make that mistake again. I mean, would it have killed them to include a "rescue" button or something? Slap some sort of teleporter device on them and beam them out to safety? Or is that not manly enough?

So yeah...distasteful and more than a little uncomfortable but not even close to how bad as that carefully clipped video makes it look.

OH, and there are also boobs growning from the walls in the same levels which you can slap, making Duke giggle.

Seriously, did they get twelve year olds in to finish this game off!?

Haha, that's awful. But hey, boobies.

When Jim Sterling thinks you game is vile, unfunny trash....you've got problems.

Jim Stirling wrote:

Duke Nukem Forever is a festering irrelevance with nothing to offer the world. It's a game with an odious personality, one that could only endear itself to the sociopathic and mentally maladjusted. There may be life in Duke yet, but not his current incarnation. Not while his developers legitimately think he's cool and hilarious, rather than creepy and nauseating, and not while he's starring in games that can't even compete with budget titles, let alone the AAA experiences that Duke Nukem Forever arrogantly launches alongside.

The game will sell well based on pure hype and audacity, but history will not look favorably upon this game. Nor should it. Nobody should think kindly of such a miserable, lifeless, grotesque little game.

Spot-on YouTube comment there, though (I know, right?):

remember when Duke Nukem Forever was never going to come out? I think I preferred that.

Man, when your rape jokes get called out as poorly-executed by the sentient turd Sterling, you know you f*cked up.

IGN gives the 360 version a 5.5

Duke Nukem Forever isn't a revitalization of the early days of the first-person shooter genre or a middle-finger to the increasingly complex and sophisticated nature of videogame entertainment. It's a muddled, hypocritical exercise in irritation with solid shooting mechanics and decent encounter design. There's some dumb fun to be had in Duke Nukem Forever, but the game tries hard to ensure it's only fleeting.

This one has just fallen off my radar entirely, even as a bargain bin pickup. And I played the hell out of the original.

I'm going to be checking up on reviews later, but I came to the realization today that one of the reasons I've been having trouble with my blogging mojo is that it is hard to review a game that is good. So even if this game sucks, I'll have fun writing it.

Plus, my money will make it to Gearbox and help fund Aliens: Colonial Marines.

So, anyone looking forward to Serious Sam 3?

Scratched wrote:

Yes, but with reservation. SS2 was not very good, and what I've seen of SS3, it looks like pretty much exactly like Serious Sam with new graphics. Not that that's a bad thing, but I'm not sure the 'old school' doom style shooter is going to fare too well these days. Hopefully it will have some originality to it, and not just new maps and new textures. I think the last great doom style shooter was Painkiller, and that one did it right.

You're not confusing SS1: the 2nd encounter with Serious Sam 2 are you?

Gamespot wrote:

Serious Sam II has a lot of levels and a few good laughs, but its simple shooting action is less likely to get your adrenaline pumping as it is to make you go numb.

I just read the Rock Paper Shotgun review, and I'm actually fired up for this game for a completely different reason.

Reading all the articles on the game's development and what brought it down, well, the game itself is a record of what made it fail. It is a document, even a lesson, wrapped up in what seems to be a sh*tty game (or just barely fun, I dunno. PC Gamer liked it well enough). Playing the game won't so much be playing a sh*tty game, but will be witnessing the psychology of the developer behind it. I will get a sort of window into the developer's mind and what he thought would make a solid experience, but is actually the loss of any sense of quality.

It's hard to really explain in only a paragraph, but for me, Duke Nukem Forever won't just be a game, it'll be a study on 3D Realms, their ego, and their downfall.

Why yes...yes I am.

I thought you were talking about Second Encounter.

My bad!

No problemo. Their naming scheme was confusing.
