I feel similarly to the Giant Bomb dudes about mobile gaming. I had a PSP and DS, and I enjoyed the games on both. I liked the PSP console-lite type games, but when I found myself playing them sitting on my couch, I realized that I can play a better version of those games on the console. With the DS, there are some amazing titles, but most of the best ones can be done on the iOS, where I'd pay a quarter of the price for them (at most). I may get a 3DS for Nintendo's first-party offerings eventually, but there's no way I could justify carrying around another device and keeping it charged for those.

That said, I have a Vita pre-ordered. I may cancel it, but the tech sure looks cool.

I agree that this market seems to be at best at it's peak.

I think the tech of the Vita is really cool. Just not sure it's not too late to be a big sales hit. I wonder if that's why Sony priced it as cheap as they did to try to keep it relevant in a world where everybody has smart phones for basic gaming.

Just out of curiosity, has the smart phone gaming revolution hit Japan and Europe as hard as North America? The PSP has sold nearly 70 million units, and most of that was done outside of the States. I'm curious how the mobile gaming climate has changed in the markets where the PSP had most of its success.

I think the key driver that will ultimately determine the greater success of both the 3DS and the Vita will be downloadable games. High-quality, reasonable prices, easy to obtain on the device downloadable games. Both companies seem to have this as a big part of their strategy and they'll both really have to land it for these to have long-term success I think. $40 retail games aren't going to be the only things that make them work.

I listened to the E3 2009 podcast with Leigh Alexander, I didn't hear anything wrong with her appearance.

For those who listen to GB, I'll just leave this here.

The appreciation of Nazi fashion, Kojima worship, and talking over everyone else in a particularly shrill tone was the complaint for that year, IIRC.

Last year was worse, arguably. She made a claim that it cost Activision 775 million dollars to rent out the Staples Center for a night, and would not back down until someone else looked it up to prove her wrong. Also, her boob fell out of her dress.

I'm not one of those that won't listen if she's on, but she is pretty annoying. I was having way more fun hearing the GB crew poke fun at her than actually listening to her opinions.

Giggled. Too bad the ending is visible in the preview.

Leigh Alexander blocked me on Twitter and called me an idiot. Well, she called me an idiot then blocked me.

What did you say to her?

The Japanese have been gaming on phones for a lot longer than Americans have. Square put out a couple big games exclusively for cell phones in Japan, IIRC.

That sure would help, but you still might have a pricing issue in a world where a $10 iPad game is on the high side of things. If I were releasing a game on the PSP, I'd have a hard time justifying not charging $20 when every other game does.

Someday I'm going to learn how to use p2p (I'm dumb) just so I can download all of the old GFW shows. I need to listen to them again.

The GFW shows are still up on 1UP. I listened to the ones where Jeff talked about The Witcher recently.

Thanks, I'll have to go to the site (maybe this weekend).

This week's Giany Bomb E3 coverage has been deep in the well kinda stuff, but super interesting and unique.

Since I doubt there's a thread on the video that started it,
the original Kanye West video's visual design is actually pretty f-ckin' awesome, and the music's okay too.
I feel like I'm looking at an old Renaissance painting with all sorts of hidden details put in the by the painter.

It would seem the South Park episode making fun of Kanye didn't go far enough.

Agreed, but I think I'll preorder the Vita anyway.
It'll come out near my birthday and Christmas after all

I just spent the last hour (I kid you not) browsing the thread at Giantbomb.

Wow.

The Giant Bomb guys talked about this site during the Day 2 podcast (I think), so I decided to check it out. They really weren't kidding that this site ripped off their design. That's totally bananas.

She also pretty much deflated the conversation. She kept trying to force tired memes like "cool story, bro" and shouting over everyone else's dialogue so that she could read twitter messages out loud.

And she'll never be back. If you watched the video feed of that podcast, you could tell Vinny and Brad were visibly annoyed by her and they actually left halfway through and did their own iPhone stream. Also, when she was literally posting hundreds of twitter messages the next day proclaiming how people just didn't "get her", an IM conversation between Ryan Davis and Dave Snider about how insane she was acting was leaked shortly afterwards. (It was actually referenced on this year's podcast, when someone said "Ryan, I think we found this year's sociopath.")

If you have access to that and are willing to share I'll be your BFF.

I'd love to see that as well.

I'd completely forgotten about that part. Yeah, she was bad.

NM. Not worth it.

I found what might be the thing: http://twitpic.com/1xw9gb/full

A transcript, from what I can figure out:

DAVE: don't bother
DAVE: was curious
DAVE: and now im f*cking (annoyed?)

RYAN: I looked at a couple and UGH

DAVE: dude, no joke... like 100 (tweets?)
DAVE: how is that even possible
DAVE: not about her, FROM her

RYAN: I think she's a sociopath
RYAN: like, for reals.

Wow it seems like everyone hated her appearance. I thought she was entertaining

I didn't mind her.

Listening to this makes me hate David Jaffe.

For a guy who hasn't done anything but iterate on pre existing ideas for the last 8 or 9 years he sure is doing a lot of Female Doggoing about people getting excited for Battlefield.

Agreed. That's what I said above.

(although I don't hate him, I just find him full of it.)

I'm only though days 0 and 1 and, as much as I hate listening to both Blow and Jaffe ordinarily, not too bad. Very interesting conversations so far.

To summarise, she had written an article about how men cat-calling at women the street, approaching them and so on, was harrassment. I said that it was the biological imperative and that it was possible for a man to approach a woman in a respectful way.

I know and have heard of people that have got dates that way.

EDIT:

I think cat-calling at women, shouting at them, whistling and so on is something worse than harrassment - it's dumb. I don't approve of that.

I find it funny that 4 years have passed and Jaffe still will not shut up about that one Gamespot review he didn't like.

Also, I did kind of agree with him that it would be preferable if game critics were more critical of AAA games that don't do anything new, but I think the audience needs to mature first. I mean, a lot of gamers like to talk about how reviewers are hyperbolic, give big franchises a free ride, or even make accusations of payola schemes, but this is the same audience who screams bloody murder about jaded critics who should be fired for bias whenever that doesn't happen (such as Gerstmann's "scandalous" 8.5 for a Zelda game.)
