Far Cry 3

It's a bad idea but it's not so bad considering that most consumers are casual rather than hardcore, as your Call of Duty example points out. And even a large portion of the hardcore players probably still buy the Treyarch Call of Duty games because they buy a larger volume of video games anyway. It also makes it easier to hide failures, such as the less successful entries in the Prince of Persia franchise. But personally I would agree that I'd rather have easier to recognize studio names.

I didn't know about this. How did I not know about this!? (don't answer that.) Nice

Hooray! Will there also be a wizard?

I would have loved to play the game more than a few hours but the map and the bullet sponges that were all the NPCs drove me crazy.

FC2 and I have been seeing each other on and off for 2 years. However, we are currently in monogamous relationship, and it's getting pretty serious.

The one improvement I would make is a "reclaiming territory" mechanic, a la inFAMOUS.

Dammit, Remo. You left us too soon.

Boner.

edit: has anyone else got back to FC2 after seeing this thread?

Yes. And D2D upgraded my game to Fortune's Edition, so I'm trying out the new weapons. Good times.

That's a shame because the game does take a bit too long to dole out the goods for the unaware gamer.

I agree that the combat is sloppy in the opening parts of the game. But once you start getting better weapons and more importantly, upgrading them, you become an unstoppable killing machine.

Every weapon has perk upgrades such as iron-sights stability, firepower, clip size, etc. A fully maxed weapon is really night and day compared to the base stuff you get from the start. An upgraded AR-16 is unstoppable. (Insert: "Headshot! BOOM!")

Looks like I'll need to play Far Cry 2 sometime before next August. Honestly, it didn't really seem like a game I would really like but I bought it for like $5 during a Steam sale pretty much exclusively because of Idle Thumbs.

+1 -.2

I also think the narrative was really interested, but I suspect part of Aaron's distaste game from the character dialog. I saw more than one review note the way the characters all spoke very quickly, in what seemed like a file-space saving measure. I'm sure you could argue that the characters spoke very quickly, because that fast rhythm represented the guilt each character felt for committing atrocities.

Or it's just sloppy game design.

Either way, I think the narrative structure is very subtle; many of us will be completing a mission and ask ourselves, "What am I doing?"

We glance at our journal and see, "Destroy relief shipment."

We think, "Oh, that's right."

A few minutes later: "Jesus..."

Hehe Heard on Idle Thumbs that it was an intentional design decision, not because of file space, but to reduce the time you had to spend around listening to the dialogue, to make it a bit "easier" for people who don't give a crap to the narrative to get involved.

I guess the compromise didn't work out. At least not to me.

Also, taking into account that FC2 only shares the name with FC1, I seriously doubt that FC3 will be as influential as it was FC2, without Clint Hocking at the helm. Wait and see, I guess.

I liked it. I tend to get annoyed with any recorded voice that isn't in 2x on my iPhone.

If that feeling were on Facebook, I would like it and then unlike it, just so I could like it again.

They just showed a video/trailer at the Ubi conference. It's 2012.

So happy!!!!!!

Speaking of a new Far Cry game, I wonder if LucasArts will finally reveal what Clint Hocking has been up to over there?

I've been wondering about that. Not this year it seems.

My cup, officially, runeth over.

Tomorrow, there will be another demo on gametrailers of "another part of the island."

I'm waiting to see if FC3 vehicles have the magic bolts that my magic wrench can turn to fix the whole vehicle.

I loved Far Cry 2. I keep thinking about that game.

I have had a big falling out with "railed" games, and for all of Far Cry 2's flaws, the fact that it gave incredible freedom of movement and freedom to attack missions from every conceivable angle was huge with me. I simply can't stomach the COD-style drag-you-through-the-scripted-sequence, whack-a-mole shooting galleries anymore. I need to be able to slink through the jungle and scope out my target from afar and plan my attack like Whiskey Whiskey.

A very large portion of the fun I had in FC2 was looking through a scope at a location and asking myself, "how do I want to approach this?". I really appreciate that from games that are still fairly approachable games and not necessarily hardcore like an ArmA title.

I only played a little Farcry 2, I might actually reinstall it later today. The FC3 gameplay video is pretty cool though.

They've got a lot of flaws to fix for Far Cry 3 but I'm quite optimistic about it. Stoked to see more.

I'm pleasantly surprised. It looks like a prettier Farcry 2 with some new toys and a slightly better bad guy. I was expecting them to do something safer like Call of Duty: Africa or something.

"Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?"

This is a very good announcement.

Darn thing won't load
Tell me I get to shoot some trigens!

They seem to have kept a lot of the movement, etc from 2 which encourages me. No sign of having to pull metal rods from your leg or bite bullets out with you teeth which I'm not sure if I'm sad or relieved about.

Oh man, on balance FC2 was one of my favourite games of the past few years - if this new one goes even half-way towards fixing the issues with it, it could be epically good.
