Tomb Raider reboot

E3 Trailer: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3...

I think they've found an appropriate voice actress replacement for Keeley Hawes, for what they're trying to do with TR.

Comes out Fall 2012.

If the real game resembles what they're presenting here, I'm definitely interested.

I don't think they've shown gameplay yet, just CG and environment renders. Releasing the trailer before could be a way to grab interest before E3 with hands on. That said, it's over a year away.

Absolutely. I'm just liking the character redesign and the setting. The voice definitely worked as well. Will have to keep looking at this one.

well it's nice to have it embedded here now too i guess

No gameplay I guess, but a nice mood piece.

Twice, even.

Eh, it's early. I remembered checking this thread a few minutes ago and people saying there hadn't been a trailer. Was that a dream?

It was, but I have a hard time imagining what the game will be. How could Tomb Raider be serious while still being Tomb Raider?

Hence the reboot, which implies a larger change than just "young Lara Croft". I can see traversal, I can see puzzles, I can kind of see combat.

The largest change I see is the theme, 'old' Lara Croft was pretty much straight down the line raiding tombs for powerful ancient artifacts and good versus evil plots. 'Old' Lara Croft was never really put in a survival situation.

I don't think the creators ever took it anything but seriously. The hope is that this time the rest of the world will be able to take it seriously as well.

the last few Tomb raider games have been pretty good. Legend was great. Underworld suffered from just being more of the same, but was still a fun game. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was a great take on the franchise.

This "reboot" seem to be trading off of Crystal Dynamics rep for turning Tomb Raider not just back into a strong franchise, but one with much better games that earlier on.

Not to go off topic too much but people keep saying Legend was great and I don't get it. Was it just because it came after Angel of Darkness which was a train wreck? I thought Legend was a combat heavy game but with bad combat and shallow puzzles. Now, Anniversary on the other hand, that was a great game. Very little combat and much more challenging puzzles. Underworld was a mix of both, so it also felt a bit too shallow.

The thing that looks promising to me about this new game is that the setup seems to preclude the presence of humans. Human enemies were always the worst parts of the TR games. I hope they really go for the feeling of solitude and desolation, just you and a huge environment, I would love that. No snake eater type sh*t though.

I think they've said you meet some other people, although I'm not sure if they're hostile or not. Details are thin on the ground at the moment.

I thought Legend was a nice balance of combat and puzzles. Anniversary was just a port of the original game using Crystal Dynamics engine.

I can see what you are saying about the combat not being that great, but to me it was just another type of puzzle usually. It wasn't about the action as much as find ing the right method. Well, the vehicle missions were all action, but were still a nice diversion.

But I never played a single Tomb Raider game after the first one. I picked up Legend based on reviews. I had recently gotten a 360 and was looking for a game for my wife and daughter that would scratch a Zelda itch. In a lot of ways, it did perfectly. Simple combat, decent puzzles using a variety of tools, and a fun story made for a game that they both loved, and one that I finished, as well.

I thought the trailer was alright. The CG was fine to good, but I certainly didn't believe the VO. I think she sounds like Lara, but her execution felt like a typical booth read and her lines were pretty much all cliches. Hopefully the gameplay will do it for me though. I think I heard they'll be presenting at Microsoft's conference, but don't quote me on that.

Doh!

Very very cliche. They should've cut out at least half of her lines.

Have to agree. The CG was nice but the whole thing was pretty badly done with regards to the voice over (no emotion, terrible acting) and the whole..... pervert old man being implied as her reason for pulling through (her father?).....

Overall i'm still positive on the game but the trailer isn't doing anything for me.... I mean... bermuda triangle mythical island in another dimension? Yeah... I thought this was a realistic reboot!

I like her face (yes, I said face.) Game developers are getting really good at picking faces full of character (The face of the guy in Deus Ex is excellent in the same way.) The mood of the trailer is also spot on. Hope they stick to it and don't do a Dead Island and, in the actual game, have us clubbing to death tigers with an electrified baseball bat while shouting in appropriate one liners.

Are we watching the same trailer? Where are you getting some of that from. It's a trailer for a game with over a year's worth of hype left to run, what are you expecting? And given the decade and a half of games they've got to break with, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a chiche in there as they try to sever ties with the old games (yet keep the brand recognition).

I'd love a TR reboot that featured actual exploration in an open world, not just within a linear series of cave/jungle puzzles. This probably won't be it, but I think it would be a lot of fun.

I thought that's what they implied this would be. Back in the GI cover story. No?

That was my take, as well.

No... I meant the writing was clichéd. Not that there were clichés in the trailer.... the writing of what the voice actress was reading was goddamn awful.

Yup.... FarCry 2 with better mechanics was my take... I hope it comes somewhere near that idea.

I don't know why i've been double-posting more recently.... my net connection is just the same as usual. :/

Oh, could be -- I haven't seen that article. If it is so, colour me very interested.

No more Keeley Hawes Booo! Booo I say!

*whips out GI*

"Returning to camp in a cliffside village, Lara hovers over the body of her mentor, Conrad Roth, who has been gravely injured and rendered unconscious. Lara patches up Roth with supplies she's scavenged, hoping for the best, but painfully aware that the situation is out of her hands."

...

"Roth is an imperative character in Lara's growth and self-discovery, and makes a meaningful attempt at reassuring her, reminding her that she is, in fact, a Croft. Roth hands Lara a blood-red climbing axe, fiercely sharp on one end. 'I don't think I'm that kind of Croft,' counters Lara, accepting the tool and the burden with a look of defeat. 'Let's hope I'm a fast learner.'"
