Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

It is not the inheritor of Wing Commander/Privateer. It is, however, the last space fighter sim that anyone has ever made, and is completely competent at that. For $5, it's excellent.

Wow, Starfarer looks amazing! Sort of like SPAZ, but with larger battles and fighters. Has anyone tried the alpha?

It's uncertain whether it's coming to Steam. The best answer seems to be "maybe" from someone important at the company:

"It's a little early to try to get it on Steam, but we'll absolutely try to do that once it's feature complete. If we do get on Steam, we'll try to make it so that people that bought the game directly from us can add it to their Steam games. I'm told that's possible.

I can't actually promise anything, though - too many factors outside our control here."

By the way, I just saw a free demo for it, http://download.cnet.com/DarkStar-On....

Has anyone mentioned Naev?

Naev is a 2D space trading and combat game, taking inspiration from the Escape Velocity series, among others.

You pilot a space ship from a top-down perspective, and are more or less free to do what you want. As the genre name implies, you’re able to trade and engage in combat at will. Beyond that, there’s an ever-growing number of storyline missions, equipment, and ships; Even the galaxy itself grows larger with each release. For the literarily-inclined, there are large amounts of lore accompanying everything from planets to equipment.

Pretty much my sentiments. I need to divide up my feelings about it to two categories:

Cons: The voice acting is terrible, the controls are very arcadey, and the story makes absolutely no sense.

Pros: The Universe is fairly large, there's always something to do/blow up, and it's a FRICKIN' SPACE SIM FOR $5.
GO BUY IT.

First I've heard of it. Looks interesting ... and very indie.

Looks very interesting, thanks for the tip. And it's free too. I'll remember to check this out later.

Thanks for the link. Thats another bookmark for me along with Spaz and Starfarer.

I got Darkstar One more than a year ago on steam I don't think it cost much . I eventually got stuck where everyone get stuck and gave it up. I think X3 is much better once you get the hang of it. The learning curve on X3 is steeper but there is a lot of freedom in the game..

There is going to be an X series game coming out in q4 this year called X-Rebirth . There isn't a whole lot of info about it considering the fact it's due to be released soon.

SPAZ just got real. Zombie time! Plus this game requires more strategy than I thought. I kept losing 600 rez ships and it set me back to nothing. Had to gather rez using the Short Bus (yes, that's the name) and work my way back up to a fortune.

Check the spoiler section to see some of the effects chapter three will bring in.

Spoiler:

When you hit chapter 3 your maximum rez storage goes from 2,500 to 10,000. About time! And your max crew count goes from 100 to 300. Thank god.

Saw this on Twitter:

Gratuitous Space Battles + Castle Vox + Evochron: Mercenary + Fate of The World + Smugglers IV for $28.50 http://www.showmethegames.com/bundle...

Spoiler:

You can park yourself next to a mining base and let the station blow up asteroids so you can collect the rez. It's a little cheap though, I found shooting up slightly easier warp gate patrols or conflict zones to be a more enjoyable way to collect rez.

Quoting so spoiler tags work.

Edit: Thanks garion, I'll remove my spoilers then.

Reinstalled Windows 7 and erased all my SPAZ saved games but I am going back for my third start armed with the most powerful weapon of all - knowing how not to screw up.

Protogalaxy is an interesting side scrolling space shooter that also has a system for buying bigger guns. It also has some puzzle elements and a gravity beam somewhat like Half-Life.

GOG.com just put up Wing Commander: Privateer for six bucks.

If enough people buy it do you think we might see a new Wing Commander game?

I've been giving SPAZ a whirl and I finally made it through the first warp gate. It helped when I figured something out; you can build ships if they're destroyed even if you're not in the same planetary orbit as your mothership. For some reason I thought you could only build them next to the mothership. The fact that they are constructed and automatically warp back in to help you fight is pretty handy.

Doubtful, but we might see more Wing Commander games on GOG.

You could try ASCII Sector. its a remake of Privateer as a roguelike.

Or Privateer Parallel Univers/Gemini Gold. Both are remakes with the Vegastrike engine, and are quite good.

I don't know if there is any point in buying the gog version since it doesn't come with righteous fire. At least one of the remakes has it included. Unless you wanted to buy it to support the game.

What is the most powerful weapon of all? Missiles?

Edit: Sorry, I reposted when trying to overwrite this post. Is there a way to remove it?

Love.

I'm perilously close to buying Freespace 2 from GOG.com and updating it with the latest patches from the mod community. Has anyone here done the same? If so, any issues?

Wait... not dandelion fluff?

Worked fine for me, the last time I did it. GOG + Freespace Open Installer is the easiest way to play Freespace these days.

I think someone watched The Fifth Element one too many times. ;D

Powerful weapon? I would say anything on a turret would be great. Set the turret to auto track targets. Oh and missiles. Missiles are great for hitting targets just off screen and they also home in on the baddies. Those nasty, nasty baddies with their bad dudes.

Apparently, double and triple turrets put out more firepower if you can get them. Each mount accommodates more guns, but each gun is smaller.

I think using boosters with weapon mounts in a 1:1 ratio (same sized booster as the weapon) is supposed to provide optimal DPS, but I'm not sure how you can test this.
