About the Game

* All-new and redesigned, Magic: The Gathering — Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 takes last year’s massive hit game to even greater heights with better graphics, more options, and new challenges!

* Face off against the AI, or gather your allies for the new multiplayer format: Archenemy, where you team up to take down a boss opponent. And if one of your fellow Planeswalkers drops out, no problem–the AI will drop in for uninterrupted action!

* Featuring ten unique decks, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 also lets you customize those decks. As you progress in the game, you can enhance your deck by swapping in new, unlockable cards!

* Gather your allies. A challenge awaits.

I'm really looking forward to it. I logged 75+ hours on the previous DOTP on Steam alone.

This new version still, sadly, won't let us alter the number of lands in a deck, but it will now let us swap in new cards and throw out unwanted cards, letting us keep the deck total at 60 cards. This is a big help.

I really wish that they'd let us sub in for at least 2 lands. My biggest complaint from the previous DOTP was being forced into a 40% lands deck, and often being mana-flooded.

So who's in for DOTP 2012?

I loved the first on XBLA so I'm a pretty easy lock for this new version.

Little worried that it could be "more of the same" syndrome, so I'll test-drive the demo first.

I'll probably pick this one up. I played a bunch on the XBL version, then again on Steam. I was very leery until this was said:

Although, like you, I wish they would let us drop a couple of lands. I don't see why this ability would affect the balance of the game.

I picked up DOTP on a whim over XBLA and felt pretty lukewarm about it at first... then it got its hooks into me and I maxed out all the stock decks. I'm working my way through the expansions now and looking forward to DOTP 2012

I loved the first one but flamed out at the end of the campaign. It started to feel like winning against that deck was a question of luck more than skill, which probably means I just wasn't very good at it.

Definitely in. I loved this game.

Like a lot of deck-building games, I've found magic to have a good bit of luck, and that the "skill" doesn't come so much in the actual playing of the cards, but in the choice and assembly of your deck. Since there wasn't that much to do in terms of deck customization, proper deck choice became the key to victory. For example, in our magic tournament, I was banking on Prozac using the powerful Black deck and specifically chose to use the Artifact deck as a direct counter, which worked.

Yeah, deck choice is key, but I could never manage to get the right combination of deck and luck to beat the final round of the campaign (which is the artifacts deck, I believe). It seemed specifically designed to hose all the other decks, and I got fed up with trying.

I'm most likely in for this. Played the hell out of the first DotP - it's a perfect game for late-night, slow-paced, sleepy-brain.

If those are 10 new decks not previously used in this game, then yes, definately in. I think it might be good for a little revival of multiplayer for those like me.

This version also has coop, though not sure about two-headed giant, but in the blurb Jeff posted, it has a new format called Archenemy. That should prove interesting - I'm in!

Should we start a new Steam group for it? Or are people mostly getting this on XBLA, or what?

So in.

I'd say the first was the best bang-for-buck game I bought that year. Even if it releases with some bugs like 2010 did, the low barrier to entry tempers the nerd rage.

I don't see why for.

I was just thinking about making a thread this morning.

I'm definitely in. I just got the first one a few months ago and I couldn't find a game online. Excited to get in early on this one.

That works.

I think the decks will be mostly new cards, but will probably have some repeats of commons (giant growth, goblins, etc). I imagine they will have some of the new cards from the 2012 card set too.

What eventually made me drop the game was that when I "got" a deck that the computer had been using, it wasn't the same deck at all. You were always stuck with a lot more land than the computer was, which made the deck much less useful when you were using it. I eventually just said 'screw this' and deleted the game.

Sounds like they haven't fixed that problem, so no sale here.

Join us and play vs other people. It's true, the A.I. did cheat a bit, by being able to run decks with 32% to 36% lands, instead of the 40% the player is forced to use. I guess they did this to make up for, well, for it being A.I.

But there's plenty of people here who will play, and at least both sides will have the same number of lands.

Can I get an invite to the Steam group?

I'd be interested in getting into some multi player, even though I don't really know what I'm doing.

Duels of the Planeswalkers is a great way to get into Magic the Gathering. Post if you have any questions, I'm sure folks will be glad to help. The basics are fairly straightforward, but the nuances of the various cards (and decks) take more time to 'get'. All the various combinations, and possibilities, make it very interesting, IMO.

also: I added a few links to the OP.

I never saw the computer with more lands than me but my decks would always have more cards.

I'm in, but I should finish the first games DLC...

I dunno if that is really a problem but rather an easy (and cheap) way for the developers to make a competitive "AI". I never felt that the game really required a competitive AI though..

Been spending tens of dollars getting back into meatspace MTG. Building your own deck from scratch is definitely the way to go, but I'll drop some cash on DOTP2.

The A.I. didn't have more land cards, it had less, or more accurately, a lower percentage of it's deck. And you had more cards, probably because you were including all the unlocked cards, running your deck total up to 80 or so cards. So the A.I. would simply get a more efficient 60 card deck.

The ability to swap out cards in 2012 should even the playing field a great deal.

Ya i should've explained better. I never saw the AI with different ratio except that it would stick with a 60 card deck most the time (not always), and i couldnt if i wanted to play with certain cards.

I'd say it goes without saying that I'll be in.

You can now pre-order this on Steam, but when I try to give Steam my money, it's ACCESS DENIED.

I get this goofy error:

Your transaction failed because you are trying to buy a game that requires ownership of another game you do not currently own. Please correct the error and try again.

I tried logging out, restarting Steam, nothing worked. I guess it's bugged.

The pre-order bonus is hattes? Colour me unimpressed.

I'd rather get a discount.

Apparently this problem is widespread. I'm told the Steam forums are full of complaints about it.

Makes me wonder if the Valve guys are sitting there going "gee, no one is pre-ordering DOTP 2012, wonder why".

Corrected for accuracy.

OK... You filthy enablers are dragging me back into the dark world. I lost interest in the last one but I will give this one a go. Throw me into the mix too.
(The bonus TF2 hats help!)
