Computer Chair Alternatives

Non-chair things.

For chairs see: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/4...

Edit: changed to differentiate from above link.

A bouncy exercise ball. Surprisingly good for you, very entertaining. And loading screens and boring CG movies can now be tolerated by bouncing around the room.

Is space an issue?

And it begins again

A pile of furry animals.

Wait, weren't you the same person who asked this like a year ago?

I have about 5 feet from desk to the wall behind it before I'd have to start rearranging furniture for more space.

EDIT: I'm a chronically filthy skimmer.

Nope, that was DeThroned.

In this case it would appear that space isn't an issue. I don't think it has to be a chair either.

Actually I wasn't picking on you, I was commenting on the "space is an issue" theme we have here

That seems pretty cool. Cheap, too!

You can get a burly man and sit on him.

Maybe a Sumo beanbag?

If you have plenty of space(enough so that it's not an issue), then I'll second either the beanbag or the exercise ball, with more weight on the exercise ball since then you get to play games *and* work your core!

Either a standing desk or a chair. You need to be at the right height for computing. Anything that puts you too low is going to cause shoulder problems eventually. I was using a leather accent chair that put me about 6 inches below a computer chair. Eventually I developed pretty bad should pain in my mousing hand. I switched back to a computer chair a few weeks ago and it got better within a week. It is almost completely gone now.

If you get an exercise ball make sure it is big enough to put you at the right height. I like using them but most put you several inches too low.

I have a standing desk (modified) at work and I like it quite a bit. It's a nice change from sitting all the time. I'm redoing my office this summer and plan on putting in a standing desk area for my iMac and a sitting area for my gaming pc and the kids' pc.

Do you ever or can you use a drafting stool with the standing desk?

Have you considered a spike?

Just one, mind. Two would be an extravagance.

Sigh, I wish I had a good use for my old (read 50+ years, hardwood with an old school pencil sharpener attached) drafting table that can be adjusted from sitting to standing and tilted, but I don't and it's currently employed as computer desk for the wife...

Whatever he gets, it should be menacing with spikes. Thats how you can tell the craftsdwarfship is of high quality.

Many people do, especially when they start using standing desks (at least that is what I've read).

How about a computer throne?

But does it recline?

I like my exercise ball a lot. When I smear chocolate or frosting or whatever on it, I just rotate it ninety degrees and I'm good to go.

The power of the feline compels you!

That is one giant cat bed.

No, that's a very tiny beanbag snack.

I don't care what it is, but damn do I want one.

That's a cat, AnimeJ.

I learned a new trick with the exercise ball today. Try to balance on it with your feet off the floor. It's hard. Regrettably, it's going to take a long time until I can work and balance at the same time.

Not the cat, the other thing, you silly Lobster.

I am now using a true standing desk. I was just using a laptop on a box for the last few weeks. I took an unused computer cart we had in our office, added a monitor stand I was already using, and found some boxes to increase the height of the keyboard/mouse part. Been using it all morning and I like it so far. My posture is significantly better at the standing desk and the direction of the desk is much nicer. My 'real' desk faces away from the window and this on is right by the window so it is easy to look outside. I'll keep this setup for now and then if I still like it after a week I'll make a more permanent solution (probably just a wooden box with some plywood) or see if I can get the college to purchase one. So far, though, the experiment is a success. Not sure how gaming would be, though.
