Terraria

What have people used to kill the Eye of Cthulhu? I just fought it using the strategy from the developer's LP (mainly shurikens and arrows) and I wasn't able to kill it before sunrise. Now I only have half as many shurikens and they're kind of expensive.

I built a wooden platform in the sky so I could shoot it even when it went underground. Was able to take it out with just arrows.

Thanks moo, good game with a bunch of new players. A lot of exploration and dying, but I think everyone had a good time.

Saw that Erik was having an orc invasion, so I hopped in to assist and ended up in the wrong server (oops). Hopefully I wasn't too much of an higher grade eye sore for the guys on mooosicle's server. I'll try to watch that for next time... Had fun though :).
Unrelatedly, for whatever reason I cannot seem to host a server of my own :(. It seems that it wont connect to the internet as I have a local IP address upon connecting to it myself. Suggestions? (Port 7777 is open)

That goblin invasion was kind of nuts. I ended up with a lot of spiky balls but no harpoon or rocket boots. Then that Eater of Worlds spawned out of nowhere. At least I got enough demonite to craft a nightmare pickaxe.

That gobo invasion was awesome.
Too bad we couldn't bait them into the trap

According to the wiki, they only attack the original spawn.

From the developer forums, here is a list of things they might end up adding to Terraria in the future:

In the long term, we will not just be adding content, but new mechanics as well. Some of the ideas the we have been playing around with are:

Pure PvP servers with team based objectives. Worlds will be generated before every match. Imagine a CTF server where towers are automatically created on either side of the map. Players can fight it out on the surface, or try to tunnel into the other tower.

Adding sloped/inclined tiles to make the world smoother.

New harder world types to continue game progression (Ex: Alien plants, alternate dimensions, evil worlds, etc.)

Enemy factions that will move into your world, and build their own city. You can slaughter them while they are weak, or let them build up their strength to get better rewards.

More events: Volcanoes, earthquakes, more/improved invasions, etc..

Weather: Seasons, snow, floods, etc..

Farming, and stamina system that gives a bonus to player stats.

Mechanics for making traps and devices.

Terraria has endless possibilities, and there is still a lot more that we want to do with it. In the meantime, please be patient while we get the last few kinks worked out.

Adding sloped/inclined tiles to make the world smoother.

Hmmm. Not sure this makes sense.

They're sounding pretty ambitious with this project, I hope they add in the ability to turn stuff on and off.

I decided to take the jump on the release version; having some some goals/bosses made me take a second look at it.
Pretty charming so far; I'm glad they included a windowed mode. I've enjoyed playing ten minutes or so, tabbing to another window, etc., etc. The 8-bit style music is a lot of fun.

Those eaters of souls look just like one of the big monsters in the cell stage in Spore! Neat.

I've avoided using the wiki so I can try and discover things for myself, which has resulted in a lot of deaths and (presumably?) slow progress but it's nice to get those rewards. Finally found some iron ore, so a shiny new iron pickaxe is now mine.

Is it possible to see in game a list of recipes you've discovered anywhere? I'm to the point where I have filled up a couple of chests with stuff, and it's a bit of a pain having to pull stuff in and out trying to discover recipes. Also, can bombs be crafted? I've coaxed a fellow to stay in a low-rent, flower-filled (love those clay pots) hovel who will sell them to me, but no way to create them yet. I can make sticky bombs, but that of course requires having a bomb.

Forgive me for skimming, is it possible to make a spawn point/house underground? I keep JUST making it to hell and immediately dying by imp spam. I tried to make a house in the cavernous area, but I'm guessing the rock wall backdrop was preventing me from using the bed I placed.

I think you can, but you will have to make the house quite large to keep them from spawning near you.

If I see enough people on, I might host my world if anyone wants to hop in. All the IP info is in the regular announcements of the steam-group, and I'll usually hop into GWJ vent.

Note that this is a fairly low level world & character. I have absolutely none of those fancy things I skimmed those previous pages, and mostly copper/iron items

You can't craft them but they are fairly common in pots.

Can anyone make me a Nightmare Pickaxe? I want to mine some obsidian, but don't really care to fight the bosses to get the material. I can pay in resources, gems, coins, etc.

So, a few things:

Please add me to GWJ Terraria Steam group.

I've played long enough to get 1 NPC and gold/silver equipment, but nothing fancy (did get depth meter and such, which is cool).

I live in EST+7 hours (CET), so...on the miracle chance I'm on at same time please consider grabbing me into multiplayer even if I have no clue what I'm doing.

Speaking of which, I found this librarian guy...

Spoiler:

And he kept saying, "wait til night and then you can go in. But I could go in, I just couldn't get any stuff (the potions would break). And then, you probably already know, he turned into this huge-as-the-screen skull and skeleton arms that killed me quickly, despite my 280 hps. Didn't seem like I was doing any damage. Just avoid this until I figure out obsidian and the other stuff mentioned above?

p.s. if you want a nice way to mess up your game, enter a new world, build a house, empty your stuff into chests, then go adventure for an hour without saving, and then get slain (which saves your character but not your world) and then have electricity/ups fail, shutting off your computer mid-mining....end result is none of the world gets saved (bye bye chests, house, etc.) but you keep whatever is on you....

If anyone has an extra copy to gift, I would be glad to gift back any of the following for it:

Counter Strike: Source
Half Life 1: Source
Half Life 2
Half Life 2, Episode 1
Half Life 2, Episode 2
Portal 1
Team Fortress 2

Here is my Steam ID: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Syldar

Afaik this isn't possible. You can only make rooms in the dirt layer by using a hammer to remove the dirt walls and replacing them. Past the dirt level you can no longer remove wall tiles and hence can't make a house.

Making a small outpost at the boundary of the dirt level and adding a drop shaft that goes straight to hell works.

Didn't somebody upthread say that you could remove the background with dynamite? Once get one tile removed you can clear out enough to make a room.

Once you're past the sky background (dirt walls) layer, there are no walls to smash--the sky background is now a rock/dirt background, but you can place walls. I tried to set a bed down there and failed, but I might have made my room too small. Have to try that again some time.

We always make outposts on the way down through the underworld. Make some stone walls and just place them. For the bed to work it needs to be in a completely enclosed area (doors count) that's covered in stone wall (or any other type of wall)

As Hypatian said, once past the dirt layer you can just place walls directly on the background. Not sure whether size of room makes a difference, but just make a decent mini-fort and there isn't any problem.

It's worth carrying round an anvil and furnace so you can make a fully-featured workstation as well.

Caddrel wrote:

That's always been my motto.

This is correct. You dont have to mess with the background that's there once its the rocky style. Just make the house as you would any above ground one, as if the rocky dirt background were sky. I felt dumb for not trying it

I've run into exactly Roo's situation. Basically everything I try at the moment, I fail at. I can't break into the dungeon, can't make it very far into Hell, can't really do much else worth trying. I'm sitting at the point where all my stuff is gold and I'm just waiting to push through to the more advanced stuff... and I still can't get a skeleton to drop a hook for me!

Its fun, but frustrating.

Had to fight an Eater of Worlds and Eye of Cthulu at the same time.
Was crazy...

If you host your own server, you can change the time of night during the fight by dragging the moon to the left. Cheap, but it might help.

Shurikens are nice because they penetrate, thus killing the other eyes that are spawned, but yeah the damage is low. Try crafting the best bow you can build and using flaming arrows. Also, building a flat area to fight on like in this video helps, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nquz...

I usually add another level or two to the arena to make it easier to dodge the eye when he comes from under you.

I didn't really see how the eye it's self ended up dying as the worm split into like 5 pieces after I chucked a couple of TNT at my feet and managed to catch it in the blasts, I suppose the eye got killed by that. Then I pretty much spammed spiky balls and those fireworks arrows to finish them off.

I'm getting sort of a bad feeling. (Likely early game spoilers):

Spoiler:

I've dug about 2,000 feet down and encountered my first imp. It killed me within seconds. Over the next four or five jaunts down into the depths, again, once I hit about 2,000 feet down, imps spawned and I was dead within just a few seconds; shooting through rock, high-fire-rate, high-damage, etc. All of my damage seemed greatly reduced (shirukens were dealing 1 point of damage to the loathsome beasts) and I never managed to seriously injure, let alone kill, even one. I thought these were probably some sort of highly-aggressive 'you shouldn't be here' style level blockade, and tried to hunt around for something I'd missed. I'm concerned something like that does not exist, and that the 'skill required to survive' quotient just hopped up an order of magnitude. Is my bad feeling justified, or is there some 'anti-imp' gear that you get from completing some task or other, or am I just not strong enough to handle this action right now (currently bedecked in shiny, all-copper gear, with a gold broadsword)?

Trying to minimise spoilers, but nevertheless...

Spoiler:

Copper armour is the first set of armour you can make, and the imps are some of the latest of late game monsters. I'm kicking around in some much nicer armour with a much nicer sword, and the imps are still annoying, but certainly killable. I'd hold off on the hell layer for a while, by the sounds of it, you'll want to spend a bit of time in the dirt/rock layers mining up silver/gold for better gear, and hopefully find a few chests for some random goodies. I'm not sure how much of the game you've seen or want spoiled, so I'll just say that once you've got a good set of silver armour and a decent missile weapon, you'll probably want to take on the first big boss, recruit a new NPC and the services they provide, then move on to the area with purple grass and poke around there...

Puce Moose wrote:

Better armor will reduce the damage and there are a lot of items that increase player mobility. They are still annoying, but as you get better gear they die faster and don't hurt as much.

I followed some of the advice above, and in a small world, it was actually really easy to get obsidian (not that I have much of a clue what to do with it now):

Spoiler:

I found the biggest underground lake I could and with a good supply of stone, built a vertical shaft next to it. I have the grappling hook, so it's no problem to go back up and uptap the bottom of the lake once ready. I dug straight down, 3 wide (cause you want a wide amount of water flow), and on the way down discovered and veered near to 2 other lakes. At the bottom, just above a lava lake I built a house (almost forgot the wall). I included a bed, table, chair, anvil, furnace, work bench, lights, the whole bit. The Demolitionist moved in. I bought dynamite from him. I grappled my way back up, uncorked two lakes at the bottom (3 stones wide for max water flow), and then went back down and started dynamiting the obsidian. Boom, boom, boom, 40 obsidian. I set spawn point at the bed in the house, and good thing too. A Mother Slime got in my shaft and I couldn't effectively get away from it, and died...but no biggie, I spawned in my house right above the lava. Why was this fun? I have no idea, but it gave me a sense of accomplishment.

Some tips for dealing with imps:
-- You shouldn't be down this far unless you're after a Hellforge or Hellstone. There's plenty of silver and gold further up in safer areas.
-- Don't attempt to kill the imps. Their fireballs will spawn +20hp hearts with some regularity, which can be very useful this far down. They'll also respawn fairly quickly, or worse, a bonedragon will spawn instead.
-- Never stop swinging your pick. It will protect you most of the time from the fireballs.

Any of you guys check out King Artur's gold? It's a free mp game very similar to Terraria (doesn't appear to have as much crafting, though).

Looks interesting.
