Terraria

So I encountered fire imps while mining a nice sized gold deposit. Found out that stone doesn't stop the fireballs. I died a lot.

If you see "Flattop" or "Byte" or "Shonuff" on the server, that's me. I have 3 computers (work, home, laptop) with different characters on them. Wish this game saved characters in the steam cloud.

I wish this was available on mac (never going to happen since it's an XNA game). But, at the same time, I'm happy that it's not since I would never get any work done.

Can I get an invite to the Steam group please.

Thanks!

Yeah, I played SP for the first time today and got down to lava and saw those imps and they quickly ended my trip...

I am fail at recruiting NPCs. I have a nice house, I have tons of money, but the merchant won't show up. I don't understand.

A room needs to be at least 5x5, I think, with a door, light, table and chair.

I don't think it's supposed to matter but I could only get the merchant and the nurse to spawn with a crafting table. Are there any restrictions to what the floor of the room is like? I have a second floor to my main house with platforms in the middle to allow me to get up there but nobody will spawn in there. I'm waiting for the demolitionist but I don't really want to add another floor.

There are specific triggers for each NPC, did you get them all?

I'm pretty sure I did what was needed to trigger the merchant. Just checked, yeah: I had tons of cash. But he never showed up. I waited quite a while--dug down to the lava area, in fact. Still no show. I wonder if there's some complication with where they need to spawn to path to the room. Hrm.

Hmm... if you build a room correctly the Guide will move into that room at night.. Just copy that exact design and you should be fine. NPCs will spawn nearby thier new rooms but may have trouble pathing to them.

I'm really curious how my nurse got up into her room. I'm pretty sure the door is too high for her to jump to. I can only get up there because I have a shiny red balloon.

That reminds me. I have an extra magic mirror and an extra shiny red balloon. If you want one of those and see matt on Erik's server, just ask. I may ask for some silver (I'm trying to craft a depth meter).

Curious bystander - so how does multiplayer work? Does it only work on dedicated servers or can I host it like Borderlands or such? I watched a few youtube vids of it, so wouldn't a persistent world be all decked out in the best shelter or whatnot already if you are a newbie?

The merchants do seem to teleport into thier rooms as long as they are not a sealed vault and have at least some kind of access to the door.

Also I found my 4th ring of regeneration. Not very impressive, each rings only gives .5hp a second. 2hp a second from 4 rings is peanuts, better off using potions. I think I might just sell em.

Make sure that the back wall is completely filled in, it's quite easy to miss one little spot around the edges.

If want want to view the entire Terraria world map, try Terraria World Viewer. There's a few programs that do this, but this one offers the source code and also gives you useful symbols for chests. I'm not sure it can locate underwater chests yet, but it is pretty good otherwise.

When building rooms for NPCs, it seems to be required to make them completely out of manufactured materials. It didn't seem to work for me to mine stone and then then use that stone as flooring. I had to make gray bricks from the stone first.

You also have to have a 'back wall', the backdrop behind the play area. That back wall has to be filled in with manufactured materials. DO NOT USE DIRT WALLS. They A) don't work, B) let monsters spawn there, and C) are a huge pain in the ASS to get rid of again. I had a huge room with a dirt wall backdrop, and replacing it with red brick took forever. I had to tear down and move all the furniture, including my chests, and making enough inventory room to completely empty one chest so I could move it really sucked.

Interestingly, after replacing the backdrop, it didn't work yet. So I then replaced the raw stone walls with gray brick. And the exact instant I drew in the last gray brick to complete the room, the Demolitionist spawned. So I'm nearly certain that raw stone will not work.

Raw stone works.
I have 2 stone homes inhabited by NPCs

Looks like someone made a Mac wrapper for playing Terraria on OSX.

Would anyone be interested in a newbie-party /w vent later? I figured out all the hoo-hahs of hosting the server, and created a MP world successfully with people able to join. I would like no godly imports, sorta like Borderlands.

Sure, what time are you thinking?

Hmm. Sounds like uncreating/recreating rooms might be a good idea, then. Mine were all made of gray brick, had everything needed, were completely walled... but it sounds like it doesn't always recognize stuff, as stories of stone not working and needing to be replaced with gray bricks suggest. (I've in fact heard of dirt sides working as long as the back isn't dirt.)

8:30 EST?

I'll will probably around around 9 EST, maybe by 8:30. I'll jump on when I have a chance.

I'd like to give MP a try. Sounds like fun.

Awesome I started a new character to play with on Erik's server, but I kept dying.

I'm nearly at the point where I will start over my character. I'm only going to take over one "legacy" item. A molten hamaxe. Because removing dirt walls with a wooden hammer is PAINFUL.

ack the spawn is contaminated with purple stuff

Does anyone know the spawn rate of meteors? I smashed all of the orbs in my singleplayer world but only got two of them. I had a to mine a couple on Erik's server too but I still ran out of metal. The game makes it sound like 1 orb = 1 meteor, maybe I smashed the orbs too quickly?

What have people used to kill the Eye of Cthulhu? I just fought it using the strategy from the developer's LP (mainly shurikens and arrows) and I wasn't able to kill it before sunrise. Now I only have half as many shurikens and they're kind of expensive.

Alright who corrupted spawn?
