I recommend that you skip the demonite pickaxe. In fact, you can skip over meteorite as well and go straight to molten gear, then backfill any items you wanted from the other materials. The track I followed on my first character was:
1. Mine your way up to a gold pick and whatever armor you can make by the time your gold pick is assembled.
2. Build a depth meter and find the floating islands. You're hoping to find the gold horseshoe that negates fall damage.
3. Build 4 or 5 iron buckets.
4. Near your spawn point, dig a two-space-wide column straight to hell. Go through anything in your way up until the lava point. That means mining out any lakes and walling off your narrow channel through them. If you don't have the gold horseshoe, place a single wood platform every so often so that you won't take fall damage on the way back down.
5. Once you reach lava, fill up your buckets, and then suicide or mirror back home.
6. Make 20 obsidian by combining lava with water and build an obsidian skull. Equip said skull, this will make you immune to heat damage from hellstone.
7. Jump back down your hole and keep digging to hell.
8. Once you reach hell, don't fight anything. Mine as much hellstone as you can before your inevitable death to imps/dragons.
9. As soon as you respawn, stuff any cash you earned on the way down in your chests/piggybank, and jump down your passage to hell.
10. Repeat step 9. You'll eventually get to a point where you get a pure imp spawn, and with continuous pick swinging to pick off the fireballs and judicious potion usage, you should be able to stay alive for as long as your potion stock holds out.
11. Wander around in hell until you find a hellforge, bust it with your hammer and set it up at home.
12. Make more obsidian, and build your molten pick. This will let you mine hellstone very quickly, and then you should easily be able to gather enough to complete whatever other molten gear you desire.

I thought they changed it so that you needed a demonite or better pick to mine hellstone. I could be mistaken though.

That was my impression as well.

I don't know if anyone ever got around to inviting me. My steam profile's in my sig.

And in case I'm being intentionally ignored, I'm just going to sit here staring at you till it gets really uncomfortable.

Erik, I tried to join your server, but it immediately disconnects me every time.

Hmm was there a patch? I will reset it when I get home to see if that fixes anything.

Oh. Bummer. Well, in that case, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Filthy enablers.

I've been up until 2am three nights in a row now.

Is the game terribly particular about how you make a home? Can the walls and the roof be the same material? Does it require a floor or can it just be built right on the ground?

I've got the Merchant to appear, so I'm on the right track. So far, nothing else. I've dug deep enough to find skellies and I'm now setting my sights on crafting.

Throw me an invite into the Terraria group, plox. I'm in the GWJ Steam group if you need to find me.

Yeah, invite me too (ruhk future), or I'll make LobsterMobster sit here and stare at you.

There are like 10 gazillion people in that group.

If anybody wants an invite, just link your profile, please. Copying and pasting a link is much more simple than me searching/sifting through people on steam. The search on steam is pretty janky too and doesn't always work or find people.

Sorry to the people I missed before. Should be caught up now.

I would also like an invite please. Steam link is in my sig. Thanks!

Well I played around on the server for a few minutes tonight. All I ended up doing was placing some torches, and leaving plenty of coins laying around for ya'll.

Has anyone been able to connect? It's timing out when I try to connect now. :\

I played for a bit a couple of hours ago, may be something on your end like settings.

Could I get an invite to the steam group as well?

Its a moot point now since you can't make picks out of meteorite. But I wouldn't skip demonite even if you could. The demonite armour set bonus increases melee speed, which ALSO increases effective mining speed.

I've discovered that the best way to farm obsidian is to have lava drop into water, not the other way around. Water will evaporate instead of creating stone if it can't hit the lava fast enough. On the other hand, even a tiny drop of lava falling into water will make stone every time.

I built an obsidian generator in my sp world which works by feeding individual blocks of water into the bottom of a lava pool. You can pretty much just sit in the same spot under the pool, tapping away at a constantly respawning obsidian block until either the water or lava reservoir empties.

yeah, the key the to operation is to have the lava hit full blocks of water. If it hits less than a full block the water just vanishes and nothing happens. But if the contact point is underwater and underlava you can just sit there and harvest the one specific block until you have enough.

So, I didn't realize that the Eye of Cthulhu can just spawn randomly. I was stuck between two tall buildings when he spawned and I just got destroyed. That sucked. On the plus side, I now have enough lenses to summon him myself so I can be ready for him.

For some reason I wasn't able to pick up a fallen star on Erik's server. I've been sitting at 9 for a while now and they seem to have stopped falling just to piss me off. I really need mana so I can try out the starfury that I got.

I joined with a new character and picked up 6 stars. And got killed by slimes.

I think the eye spawns if you haven't gotten your first boss kill in a while. I think I was at the silver armour stage when the eye started to spawn at night until I got him on my second try.

Can I get an invite please?

Yeah is there an issue with slime spawn rates now on MP?

I followed Malor around till he got killed. Then I was deep underground, alone and surrounded by monsters with nothing but a copper pick, copper axe, some torches and this really neat rock I found.

It was pretty scary, till a giant worm ate me.

I was just about to tell you to wall yourself in while I tried to get back to you, Lobster, but you died before I finished typing.

Walls don't stop those damn worms anyway, unfortunately.

Can I have an invite, too, please:

I've run into the Eye of Cthulhu a few times now. I might have gotten him down to 2000 health, but that's about it. I watched a video posted on the wiki of a strategy to beat him, so I might try that, but I can't remember where the demon altar is.

Almost made it to the hell level yesterday & got killed by imps. One dropped a strange flower, but my inventory was full & I couldn't pick it up. Boourns.

I guess I'd like an invite to the Steam group please? Check sig for details.

I just picked this up and the thought of playing with pubbies is utterly terrifying. May I have an invite?

I keep running into this problem. I need to learn to stop taking everything with me when I'm just mining.

It's not possible to remove the chests that you find is it?

It is possible, but I think they have to be empty first. You just need to hammer them.

Do you need a hammer above a certain level? Because I was hammering for awhile. Maybe it wasn't empty.

Any hammer should work. I've definitely taken chests out of the dungeon with my crappy hammers.
