After 6 or so hours of single player play, I finally took a gander at the Wiki.

Oh dear god.

QFT. I've spent 20 hours and just saw my first boss and lava today. I also saw my real boss and he said I'm fired.

Yep, I'm about 20 hours in and I've only just seen lava. Haven't even gotten close to the hell layer though from what I can tell. I've fought quite a few bosses at this point though, getting enough demonite ore is tough, but once you've gotten enough of that to make some tools and weapons, the game accelerates quite a bit.

So I'm on the fence on this one, what qualities in the game recommend it? Also, how active is the multiplayer with goodjers?

how the hell do I fight imps? the best I can do is try to dig my way into a large enough cavern without lava, but then I have 6 of them bouncing be around with wall piercing fireballs.

Terraria Online is reporting that the game has sold more than 200,000 copies.

I decided to check this out. Can I get an invite to the steam group please? (me)

You can block the fireballs with any weapon, tool or damaging spell. Not a winning strategy, mind you, but it should buy you time to hunt them down individually.

With Minecraft and now this, am I the only surprised that they haven't heard of a major developer working on a AAA crafting game? What more do you need to know to realize that there is a major niche here waiting to be filled?

What's the word on future plans from the devs? Have they made any bold promises for new patches? I'm curious about the game and I've hovered my mouse over the "buy" button more than once but whenever I watch a video of the gameplay I just can't help but wince at the inventory and crafting interface. Would there be any changes to that in the future or should I expect that it's final that way and is a "love it or leave it" thing?

I don't think execs at big publishers & studios are capable of wrapping their heads around the concept. If they turned out something, it'd likely be sterile and soulless.

I'm not sure what they have planned, but I think there are a few things that bode well for the game:

1) I think they released it earlier than they'd wanted because the game got leaked. So, like Minecraft, it's still Alpha/Beta with room to grow.

2) They only started developing the game in January and they've accomplished a lot in such a short period of time. If they've created a framework for themselves that's "easy" to update, maintain, and add to, that should go a long way in helping them create new content for the game.

3) It has sold over 200,000 copies in just over a week. I suppose this could be a benefit or a detriment, but it seems to me that the financial security would allow them to dedicate themselves full-time to the game.

Tagged for future questions that I'm bound to have.

started playing this crazy time sink... can i get invite to the group?

The blood moon does wonders for your pocketbook. But, I think it's bugged because zombies can open doors now on every night (not just the one with the blood moon).

We need more people on multiplayer! Just digging around in the ground looking for stuff is fun. But not nearly as fun when you know there are other people around.

I switched to a small world (from medium) and it's pretty awesome for single player -- you find a lot more stuff. In my new world, my base is 500 ft underground, close to the second background shift.

I was able to make the depth meter, which is pretty neat.

Also found out that skeletons can open doors and the guide loves opening doors for monsters.

I plan to build another deeper for more and skeleton spawns.

That's pretty awesome.

Hahaha dropping into a pit of lava? That's so Tamren.

Tis nothing, I had my jet boots on

If you just want to mine, you can just block the fireballs with your pick and ignore the imps. This works best when you can find an area where the can only teleport above you since you can't block shots from below. Also, it's even easier with two people swinging in opposite directions.

Hey Fedora, it was fun building that trap yesterday.

Also, can I get an invite to the Terraria steam group? (steam profile)

Just picked this up, tagging the thread for now.

Can i get a steam group invite as well?

Thanks.

Also, was anyone able to connect to Erik's server today? It was working fine yesterday but today I keep getting "Lost connection" upon joining the server.

Could I apply for a position in the GWJ steam group? My tag is somewhere in my signature.

May I have a group invite as well?

Thanks!

I'd also like a group invite:

i was gone for a couple of days but I'll probably jump in tonight. i really have not explored the surface at all, i created a underground tunnel to the right to my house and I just keep going deeper and deeper into the caverns.

The only way to get demonite is to kill bosses, right? Specifically the Eye of Cthullu and the Eater of Worlds? How much do they drop? I would like to make a demonite pickaxe.

Also, it's annoying that the demon eyes don't drop lenses that frequently. I went through a blood moon night killing tons of eyes and I still only have 7 of them.

I recommend that you skip the demonite pickaxe. In fact, you can skip over meteorite as well and go straight to molten gear, then backfill any items you wanted from the other materials. The track I followed on my first character was:
1. Mine your way up to a gold pick and whatever armor you can make by the time your gold pick is assembled.
2. Build a depth meter and find the floating islands. You're hoping to find the gold horseshoe that negates fall damage.
3. Build 4 or 5 iron buckets.
4. Near your spawn point, dig a two-space-wide column straight to hell. Go through anything in your way up until the lava point. That means mining out any lakes and walling off your narrow channel through them. If you don't have the gold horseshoe, place a single wood platform every so often so that you won't take fall damage on the way back down.
5. Once you reach lava, fill up your buckets, and then suicide or mirror back home.
6. Make 20 obsidian by combining lava with water and build an obsidian skull. Equip said skull, this will make you immune to heat damage from hellstone.
7. Jump back down your hole and keep digging to hell.
8. Once you reach hell, don't fight anything. Mine as much hellstone as you can before your inevitable death to imps/dragons.
9. As soon as you respawn, stuff any cash you earned on the way down in your chests/piggybank, and jump down your passage to hell.
10. Repeat step 9. You'll eventually get to a point where you get a pure imp spawn, and with continuous pick swinging to pick off the fireballs and judicious potion usage, you should be able to stay alive for as long as your potion stock holds out.
11. Wander around in hell until you find a hellforge, bust it with your hammer and set it up at home.
12. Make more obsidian, and build your molten pick. This will let you mine hellstone very quickly, and then you should easily be able to gather enough to complete whatever other molten gear you desire.

I thought they changed it so that you needed a demonite or better pick to mine hellstone. I could be mistaken though.
