U.S. athletes told to cool it at Olympics

U.S. Olympic officials have instructed the athletes not to partake in the traditional practice of grabbing a national flag and parading it around after a victory.

Should we allow jealousy and unjustified hatred towards Americans affect our actions and pride?

Actually, if you read the article fully, they''ve been advised not to do so, not instructed (mild connotative difference there).

My personal thought is, do it anyway. If it''s tradition for all nations to do so to celebrate a victory, then it''s a tradition for everyone.

If not, then hey, can''t hurt to not rub everyone else''s nose in it, eh?

Of course, here''s an analogy that might fit: how would you feel if the smartest kid in class always paraded around the room showing of his test that got the class''s highest score?

When our track & field team staged a clownade during last Olympic parade, draping up in the flags and striking dumb poses, that indeed looked disgusting.

I say rub it in their faces. They hate us anyway so we might as well let them know that we''re better than them.

This is BS. Wave the flags all you want guys and girls, you have earned it. The rest of the world can piss off if they have a problem with it.

If they don''t like it, there''s lots of room at Guantanamo for any disgruntled foreigners.

I don''t think people would mind an athlete running around a track with his country''s flaged draped over his shoulders.

What I do think they''d mind is the same athlete making ""We''re number #1!!!!!111oneoneoenoe"" gestures, strutting, posing and gurning maniacally infront of photographers.

I wonder if the South Park flag would be acceptable? I mean, it''s not nearly as offensive as the Red, White and Blue.

Good gravy.. this world is due for an ice age.

Because we all know that Europeons never do that.

Of course not, they''re not #1...

Ahem. On the next Olympics, it''ll be Americans who''ll be the foreigners.

We are Americans. Wherever we go, it is the other people who are foreigners. Try to keep that straight.

You lot do it more than us. I''m amazed at how easily Americans will hoot, hooler, bark and clap at almost anything.

""Hey honey. How was your day?""

""Not too good. I''m a feeling a bit constipated and I wasn''t very well at lunchtime.""

""HELL YEAH, f*ckIN A! OOGH! OOGH!""

I see your knowledge of everyday American home life comes from watching UPN sitcoms...

Sunset Beach, actually.

According to the research, amazingly, it happens not only due to Americans'' overblown sense of self-importance but also in large part due to atrocious knowledge of geography

Well, overblown is a subjective term. Maybe you''re just suffering from self-loathing, easy enough since you are an American who hates America.

but also in large part due to atrocious knowledge of geography

Or a good knowledge of the future. Eventually we will get tired of people telling us how we are imperialists and show them what the term really means... ""France, the otherPuerto Rico""

Do you watch soccer? The eruopeons are just as bad as us the only problem is that you guys have an inferiority complex and base your knowledge of Americans on TV shows.

So, American arrogance is a result of a knowledge? Quite a paradox.

Those Olympic athletes with sub-100 SATs are definitely not the knowledge vessels, one thing for sure. Neither about ""future"", nor ""past"".

I''ve seen soccer. They''re monkeys as well. My knowledge of America does come from film and TV, but that''s both fiction and non-fiction programming.

We don''t have an inferiority complex, we''re just quieter than you lot. Perhaps it''s just the American lower classes that''d go mental at the opening of an envelope.

What a silly suggestion. Nobody''s going to get shot just for strutting about like an idiot. It''s Greece, not the states ferchrissakes.

First of all, you''re the one who considers Americans ""arrogant,"" and interesting position, since I assume you are one. But you come off as a little arrogant sometimes, so I can see why you might suffer some transferrence here.

Secondly, real classy of you to attack the Olympic athletes as being morons. Did they offend you somehow, or is it just that they represent this arrogant country you dislike so much?

yeah, in Europe they only kill you if you''re a Jew.

Imminent demise of this thread predicted.

Easily, they offended me by putting up a bad spectacle while draped in our flag.

P.S. I wonder why you still haven''t asked me how do I dare to question their patriotism?

Ouch- gently, Ral.

I think Ral''s just decided to say the heck with decorum or reasoned discussion and say things intended to provoke those that disagree with him.

Good stuff!

Agreed, excellent reading good chap!

Yeah, that was way over the line. Being sarcastic doesn''t give anyone the right to be pointlessly asinine.

Locked.
