The Witcher 2 Catch-All

Yeah, I had to turn it down, too. But that's the only time I felt it was necessary, so I felt no great shame at it.

Finally got around to beating the Kayren, after doing most of the sidequests.

One thing I'd like is some middleground between TW1 style quest markers for the monster hunting quests, and nothing which seems to be TW2 style. It took me quite a while to hunt down the various nests wandering the whole forest, a rough quest area would be nice.

Yeah took me a while too - those nests are annoying.

Just reached the 'ruins' scene not long after beating the Kayren...Not to keep comparing this to dragon age 2 (or bioware games in general) but...

Spoiler:

The way they handle the 'bath scene' between Geralt and Triss just makes Bioware's similar sensible-underwear clad attempts look completely laughable in comparison. Even down to the dialogue between the two of them before hand and the way it ties in with the joke of the elves and..gnome? in the ruins above. Brilliant

...although you may want to watch the volume if you have impressionable ears in the vicinity

I stumbled upon the right places eventually by just wandering around the forest and I kinda liked that because it feels organic, but it contrasts with the structured nature of having a Journal and quest log. The quest even says 0/4 tunnels (or whatever) destroyed and that just doesn't mesh with not having a quest marker. There's an expectation that you should be able to get the quest and progress it right away. Being able to ask someone about the location of the nests or something would've helped a lot.

Man, this game is kicking my ass.

That's why I was saying a middleground. I don't want to be led by the nose as that's not really hunting, and I want a bit of guidance rather than wandering lots of irrelevant bits of the maps. I eventually got it by wandering around enough to get a path I hadn't taken and some neckers attacked me, enemies are usually localised near an objective so press Z and there it is. I guess what I would like is tools to help me work it out, show me where I've been fighting most, what routes I've taken (so I can eliminate areas), and the region I should be concentrating on.

It's like the whole game, it's nearly there, it just needs a load of little tweaks and additions. I hope they keep going on it, the hint that they are doing an expansion (as opposed to small chunks of DLC) sounds good as that gives them an incentive to do any needed rework on the game to keep the audience. It wouldn't be like TW:EE where it's just a new version of the game, but new content they can sell.

I find that bombs and traps are the only ways to take down the really tough opponents. I also upgraded my Quen sign to last like 70 seconds, so that's a big help too.

Gosh... I wonder what's going on in the spoiler thread. It must be REALLY detailed stuff about how to approach certain fights. Huh... nope. I guess it's all here.

From what I've heard about how much Chapter 2 can change depending on what you do in Chapter 1 I might have to stay out of it until I beat the game twice gonna take a while

This game would probably be 80% easier if targeting wasn't so fussy. Abruptly switching to a further target on the other side of a group of enemies, leaving me surrounded and with my back to a bunch of dudes, is what kills me the most.

I think the targeting is related to the problem with picking up loot on the ground too.

Still loving it, but I've switched to Easy, and even that gets frustrating.

Try using Alt to lock on

Umm, that looks like good advice. Thanks.

Sorry Rezzy. I was considering plot related spoilers and not gameplay related spoilers. I'll be more careful in the future.

Spoiler:

Jesus Christ. I came up to the Letho fight, and it is a painful, not fun, Female Doggo of a fight.

I'm level 11 and don't have really many other quests (that i can see) to pursue. I'm just playing it on normal, so I wouldn't think it would be THAT hard. I've played a many video games with hard boss fights, and this one just seems ridiculous.

What am I missing?

Edit: managed to find another quest. Maybe there are more that I'm missing.

Edit 2: Unless I just need to grind up a 5 levels somehow (which is going to take a hell of a long time wandering around because the map sucks), this boss is just plain cheap. With 3 potions applied (probably not the best ones), one sword hit from him takes off about half my health, while one hit from me takes off about 1/20 to 1/10 of his health. That's just a plain cheap boss.

Grrrrrrrr.

Nothing too offensive has happened yet, but considering some of the names being dropped re: major fights I wanted to head things off before it got too specific.

Spoiler:

I've been goofing around in chapter 1 trying to find stuff to do while putting off the Letho boss fight and found the "Hung Over" quest. It was pretty funny, and now I have a tattoo!

It's good that they still put stuff like that in.

Strangely, I find myself missing Vizima, or perhaps something about how TW1's areas were constructed.

The Kayran fight was pretty cool, enjoyed that. Agreed with stevenmack's spoiler tagged comment above.

This game is <3

How to beat a chapter 1 boss spoiler (something I figured out on my own):

Spoiler:

So, as to how to defeat Letho, I figured out a really, really easy way to do it. Spam grapeshot bombs at him. I hadn't noticed it before, because I only had a couple and they don't do much damage. However, if you make 20 of them or so, they will take down his health 3/4 of the way and he can't do anything while he's being hit. It's a legit piece of cake way to beat him.

Just finished Ch1.

Thinking about the sex thing, specifically with the most common comparison against Bioware's games, I can't really pin down why it's better apart from the writing, and how it makes sense in the world and is part of it. With Bioware games it just feels glued on afterwards to appease their rabid fans, or that they need to tick a certain role-play box, rather than it being a tightly integrated part of the game. Perhaps this is because of the use of a constrained and written character (Geralt) versus the cypher that you get in many RPGs. While there is flexibility in the character of Geralt, he is defined by the writing.

Plus, y'know, every other conversation seems to involve 'ploughing' in some way.

Just started chapter 2 and the first thing I noticed that was awesome: clouds. They just look so real!

That's because 99% of people you meet have a dirty mouth, which makes sense has you're hardly in polite society most of the time. I guess that's another thing TW does well, people right down at the bottom up like the brickmakers living in the swamps worshipping an old god, to the nobility and everything in between.

What level are you?

I was level 11, don't remember what weapons but they were the best stuff you could craft in chp 1, Jagged Sword maybe? Don't forget to use your potions, oils and bombs. You have them for a reason.

Well, I was using potions, oils, and bombs, and I couldn't do it. If you check a few posts up, I figured out an easy way to beat him. He's a cheap boss imo - has massive health and deals massive damage.

sweet jesus this game is hard. I thought I had combat down, then there were near-infinite spawns of monsters.

The game looks great. But geeze am I getting my ass whupped, and I'm not even out of the Prologue. Any fight with more than 2 or 3 guys and I'm dying again and again and having to reload. It's a bit frustrating.

Also, does the Prologue story seem a little disjointed to you? Form a "let's get into the head of amnesiac Geralt" I guess it's good at giving me that same feeling of rediscovering something. But on the other hand I'm kinda lost in the story and not sure where it's going.

Yeah. There is also a strong sense that people in the Witcher actually have sex (and frequently), whereas sex in Bioware games is to toilets in Star Trek episodes.

Just finished The Witcher (like maybe 5 minutes ago). About to jump into the sequel now.

I was heartbroken that I had to replace D'yaebl last night with some random cutlass. Oh well, it's not an RPG unless you're upgrading loot I guess.

I think that one thing that makes the sex in The Witcher better than in Bioware games is the playfulness. Sex is playful, it's not a mechanical check list of positions. Sex in this game looks fun, not rote.

And the animation is orders of magnitude better, than Mass Effect and Origins at least, both of those were like the sex scene from Team America.

Oh, does anyone else think that the voice of Cedric is 'Generic elf voice' from Oblivion?
