The Witcher 2 Catch-All

Just finished the game (don't judge me!). I'm definitely thinking of going through again to check out different choices, but the boss fights (especially the final one) were real slogs (I played on easy -- good luck to everyone playing above that).

On easy, money isn't really an issue and crafting isn't really necessary. I played with easy QTEs, too, since I hate QTEs.

I think the dwarven dialogue is some of the best I've ever heard -- so many crude, funny lines. Didn't really care for voice actors who played Triss and Letho; everyone else was pretty good, though.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. I like the new combat and, as everyone's already said, it's a beautiful game. A great sequel.

I'm loving this game, but there's a part that is driving me nuts.

Late Chapter 1 Spoilers

Spoiler:

Where the hell is Cedric? Every time I find a splotch of blood to follow it takes me to some random dead guy. I've been going at it for an hour. If anyone knows where in god's name he is please let me know.

The voices they used for Iorveth and Letho in the trailer up on Steam are far superior to the ones they used for the final game.

Group leader: Tell us your story, ebarstad.
ebarstad: I didn't get up to go to the bathroom for 2 days while I played the Witcher 2.
Another group member: Wow, you didn't go to the bathroom for 2 days?!
ebarstad: I said I didn't get up to go to the bathroom. *hangs head in shame*

Shamelessly stolen from a CivAnon video, but it might apply here. Not judging, ebarstad, not judging!

Has anyone figured out a way to make the components for a recipe scroll up faster when you click one? I'm getting tired of waiting for 15 seconds per recipe to see what I can make.

So, did anyone else find the Act 1 bossfight completely bullsh*t? I had to turn it down to easy, which was reverse bullsh*t because I could just spam attack never get hit. Apart from that the game just keeps getting better and better.

A question about that fight though:

Spoiler:

Can you avoid the fight with Letho? There was an option that sounded non-combatative but [i]I didn't try it.

No, but you can see all the recipes in your Journal, it works better.

edit: I went to the GoG forum to look for a thing and some twat deliberately puts a massive spoiler in the thread title. Thanks *****. I want to punch him

Have you guys read any of the terms of service for the game. It is pretty hilarious and when I say hilarious I mean Intimidating. Is it just me or are ToS agreements getting more hostile sounding.

I'm having a huge problem. I tried re-installing and it's doing the same thing. The game is stopping/hanging at the wolf head symbol on the screen, and not opening the program. I open the launcher, fine, click on launch game, the wolf head comes up...and that's it. Nada. Nothing else. And I played it for 6 hours before this happened with no problems, and did exit/launch game several times....

GAH

p.s. Not sure if this is relevant, but whenever I've launched the game, the launcher has never shut itself off. Like I play for 2 hours, exit the game, and there is the Launch window still open.
Windows 7, lots of power, Avast Free running (issue?).

Mine does that, it seems like normal behaviour to hide itself in the system tray. I love it when developers think they are special an do things their own unique way. I've just quit the game, if I want to launch it again I'm quite happy clicking the icon again.

I haven't read it but I think this is due to the game being sold on Good Old Games and their DRM free policy.

At $200 the best bang-for-the-buck video card for The Witcher 2.

The Galaxy GTX 560ti 1GB

And it comes with a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable for living room Witcher 2 goodness.

Edit: And it overclocks very well.

Even without Professor X that prison escape was awesome. But rpg tension breaking 101, first I must loot everything before my glorious escape.

Looting is one thing I'd like to see changed in RPGs, it seems so often it's there because "that's how you do RPGs, right?".

-If you've got a party, why aren't they helping in the looting instead of me clicking every single barrel and dead rodent.
-If I always want to loot things like money, or where my inventory isn't limited, why isn't it automatic. Why present me with a window asking me to select the stuff if there's things I always want. Just present a summary of what loot you've just gained.
-And as you said, out of context looting, where your character can rob a town blind and no one cares.

Mass Effect did that didn't it?
Then you forget to open your inventory for an hour and suddenly you have fifty assault rifles lying around.

ME1 autolooted from killed enemies, but not containers. I'm sure the other goons I'm dragging around with me can also peer into barrels and take anything that looks nice, or even just call out the nice stuff if the majority of loot is filler, like houseware in the elder scrolls.

Torchlight auto loots on proximity. Don’t mistake me, I love opening chests. Sticking my hand down a corpse for gold, less so. It would be less cumbersome if the context sensitive areas in The Witcher 2 were bigger as already mentioned. But in that scene, the tension after I fight my way out is killed by "ooh boxes of string and coal." And that is a story consequence of the new crafting system.

There is an other side to that coin. Uncharted has many chase or flight scenes where you haves collectable wizz past you and you need to fail or reload to get it.

p.s. Can anyone tell me what this is exactly? Obviously it's a spoiler to follow the link cause dude I found something in the game..

the screenshot of interest

Spoiler:

I found it where a bunch of Nekkers were spawning in, or rising out of the ground, near Flotsam. I hit the z button, and this nest-looking thingie highlighted. Nothing to click on and I tried setting it on fire multiple times. Nothing

I haven't found one yet so this is just a guess but I assume that's...

Spoiler:

...one of the tunnel entrances you need to close to stop the nekkers from spawning fo the quest. you maybe need the quest first to activate it - or possibly use the 'force push' ability to collapse it?

Spoiler:

The quest is found on the notice board outside the inn. As for destroying it... No signs necessary.

Edit: Oh, and something I figured out fairly recently. After you've read a book about a type of monster, hit C and go to your Knowledge pane. It'll show you exactly what you learned.

Ok, I give, how do I close the

nekker tunnels

?

@Nevin

Spoiler:

You need grapeshot bombs. If you press 'C' and look around a bit you can read info about monsters you have info on and it's mentioned there.

Hmm, this is a bummer. I have the DLC bug that won't verify Troll Troubles or the Mysterious Merchant.

Is this in the prologue sections? Did you get any drops from 60fps while playing through heavy sections? Have you tried it with vsync off?

Yeah, Ubersampling isn't really meant for much current gen hardware. I don't even know if 2 GTX 580s would handle it very well. From what I've read, it doesn't make a huge difference in image quality anyways.

Yes I sampled from the start to the point where you are going through the village looking for the enterence. No no drops unless you call 58FPS a drop.

I'll turn off Vsync during my next session. But looking at the GPU usage I don't think it's going to add many (unused) frames.

Turning off Vsync gained me ~10-30 (unused) fps at 1080p.

Even though The GTX580 @ 980mhz maxes out at 60deg. with the fans at 50%; I can smell the heat coming off the video card. Smells like faint dust burning. That Artic GPU cooler is doing a great gob of dissipating some wattage.

Edit: After working around the house I placed where I had smelled this particular smell before. It's the smell when you get close to a lightbulb that is on. Makes me think about how many watts I'm using. I might put my wattmeter on my PC and make myself feel guilty.

But the wisps of faint smell just add to the gritty Witcher 2 experience.

4 out of 6 on the papercraft. Aaaaaaaand CREEPY CLOWN. Muahahaha.

Interesting: According to this twitter feed, a Crossfire Profile release won't do the trick, so they're going to have to release some hotfix drivers: http://twitter.com/#%21/CatalystCreator

Yeah, me too. But it looks like they're going to fix it in the patch next week: http://www.en.thewitcher.com/communi...

Same here, but I can wait, I doubt I'll be done with chapter 1 any time soon - I'm really taking my time with this one.

The combat is seriously starting to grown on me now that I've gotten into the swing of things - just took down one of those queen bugs which was an immensely satisfying fight.

I have one question though - am I missing how to use Mutagens properly or do I simply not have any skills unlocked which you can apply them to? I seem to have a hell of a lot of them and nowhere to slot them in right now.

Jesus Christ. I came up to the Letho fight, and it is a painful, not fun, Female Doggo of a fight.

I'm level 11 and don't have really many other quests (that i can see) to pursue. I'm just playing it on normal, so I wouldn't think it would be THAT hard. I've played a many video games with hard boss fights, and this one just seems ridiculous.

What am I missing?

Edit: managed to find another quest. Maybe there are more that I'm missing.

Edit 2: Unless I just need to grind up a 5 levels somehow (which is going to take a hell of a long time wandering around because the map sucks), this boss is just plain cheap. With 3 potions applied (probably not the best ones), one sword hit from him takes off about half my health, while one hit from me takes off about 1/20 to 1/10 of his health. That's just a plain cheap boss.

Grrrrrrrr.

I just beat that fight. You only have to get him to about half health before it ends. Use the roll dodge a lot and it's not so bad.

Heheh... Well, I was using a hell of a lot of roll dodge. I couldn't even get him down to 90% health. Grrrrrr. I REALLY don't want to have a boss fight where I have to study it for 2 hours in order to "game" the system. That's just ridiculous.

Thanks for letting me know that you only need to get him down to 50%. Having said that, that is f***ing {ableist slur} of the game designers. Why? That's all I want to know. Why?

What level are you?

Edit: Also, what armor/weapons are you using and what route did you take for your leveling up.

Yeah, they visibly cocked something up with that fight, it's a bit too hard, I had to change difficulty to easy.
But before going to meet Letho you have an option to drink potions, which I didn't use, so maybe I shouldn't whine about it now.

Well, I'm going around doing stuff now to try and remedy the situation, but I don't know if it's going to make much of a difference.

I heard killing him with throwing knives is stupidly easy, so if you pick up an extra skill point you could try that. Personally I dropped it down to easy. I almost had him a few times on Normal, but it's just not worth it to let it sour the experience that much. It took me almost ten minutes to almost get him down but then I made one mistake and died anyway.
