Terraria

I ran across this world-size comparison for those of you who were curious.

And here is the tool people are using to generate these maps (if you want to spoil yourself)

Played this til 4:30 last night. Such a time sink.

Yeah, my wife was out of town yesterday so I pretty much spent from 6pm-midnight playing it. The game is like crack or something.

I was already for bed after playing it a bit and then a friend logged on and wanted to try multiplayer.

Speaking of multiplayer, I'm anxious to try it. Anyone up for a game today, add me on Steam and let's give it a whirl.

I am definitely interested in some MP fun. I am not on Steam now, but I will try to remember to add you tonight.

Speaking of speaking of multiplayer, my wife and I tried it last night and couldn't get it to work. I couldn't even join the server that was running on my own machine! We're going to try Hamachi, which everyone seems to be using to make it work, tonight and see what happens. If anyone has gotten it to work on a LAN without Hamachi could you please tell me if there is some trick to it?

As I said a few posts back, the game grabs the first IP address it sees and binds to that. If you have any extra networks (like for virtual machines), it can bind to one of those and fail to work. It listens successfully, but nothing can connect.

This has got to top the 'rookie move' list of network programming mistakes. You always* listen to 0.0.0.0 unless explicitly configured differently by the user.

* Well, unless you're doing tricky things with networking.

I've been playing this and I like it, but iron seems to be scarce on the maps I've generated.

I have a few days off after today, so I'm going to make it my mission to find one of those floating islands. In my mind it will be full of loot and fantastic things to craft, but there is always the chance it's just a floating island.

With some monster who will tear my head off.

Thanks Erik. You're right, I didn't think of the spoiler angle until you mentioned it. That would kill all the exploration fun I'm having at the moment.

I was lucky enough to find one in the first place I looked. It has a building made out of silver blocks and a chest with a

Spoiler:

Lucky Horeshoe that negates falling damaging, which was very useful on the way down.

I'm also interested in trying out MP if anyone is up for tonight(or this weekend).

I got about eight hours into my little world, and now it crashes every 30 seconds after firing it up. This truly sucks.

This game sounds amazing but I think I will hold off until multiplayer works and it gets a bit more stable. Kind of like Magicka come to think of it...

This game is so much fun

I haven't really found the mining to be tedious. I've been exploring preexisting caves instead of digging my own, it's much more fun that way. Maybe I've been lucky because there was a huge cave system not far from my home that went all the way from the surface almost down to the level where lava starts to appear. I recommend getting the grappling hook as soon as possible, and to make good use of the wood platforms, which are pretty useful as a breadcrumb trail as well.

Don't let the "let's play" video deceive you, which they say is a beta version (iirc?), because the enemy spawn rate is not nearly as bad in the actual game.

If you loved the survival and exploration side of Minecraft, and even though this is a very different game, you should definitely enjoy it.

Does anyone want a slot in a Steam group-buy? $7.50 per via PayPal gift if you want in. PM me.

I got one copy left over from a 4-pack. Anyone wants to dive in?

Or I can pass it over to Raddevon if he can't get another 3 for his 4-pack.

Erik the Red and I played this for more hours than I care to admit last night. Getting the initial connection working was a tad rocky, but after that it was smooth sailing. We did have two server crashes during the night, but were able to fire it right back up and didn't lose anything but a little walking time.

There's something very fun about doing the exploration with a second person. It's nice to have someone to laugh with when you accidentally release the lava over your heads, there's the shared joy of discovery when you find the area you're looking for, and it makes the digging go a lot faster. Two people picking away can make a tunnel to hell in no time. We also found that there are many, many duplicates of some of the chest items, so don't worry too much about who gets what. You'll find another.

I'd like to try some MP. Friending you on steam.

We found sooooo many heart containers and Hermes boots....

Anyway, I too had a blast last night. Exploring Hell was such a tragi-comic experience with lots of encounters with lava and giant bone dragons.

We totally need to get a big group server up so we can make our own Terraria Goodjerville.

I'll go in on a 4-pack, either raddevon or Falchion (if you are still looking to unload the last copy).

I think sometime this weekened i'll be working on a server and keep this thread posted. Also, I never had the server crash on my laptop. But, a friend of mine ran it on his rig and it crashed...

Erik, is that a lightsaber™ in your inventory?

Yeah pretty much. They call it a phaseblade, but we know what it really is. It even makes the lightsaber sound when you swing it.

Awesome. I have yet to dive into the Wiki as I like the exploration and unveiling of secrets, but I might just have to go look up what I need for that.
