Help me enjoy X-Com

Hmm with the addition of Cube we will end up with a good 40 soldiers.

I wish i could get back into X-com as well as Tamren ot post some AAR reports, but i just go frustrated with the graphics/interface issues of it being an old school game, that i semi rage quit after a mission or three.

Just for fun though Tamren can you send me the text file with everyone's name on it? I'd like to try my hand at this again just for fun.

Both of you, remember this. Fixes a lot of the frustrations.

Alright I think I have everything set up. Out of 40 soldiers only 10 + a tank will fit on the skyranger. So I think what I will do is split everyone in half and run skyrangers out of two bases. There is still a bit of paperwork to do, mostly giving everyone the right name. But I should be starting missions soon.

Yah! You know this is one of my favorite threads, by far when you're up and posting about my latest death.

Reading that quickly, I saw "...and massaging my teammates."

Let the bodies hit the floor!
(Does anyone else have Drowning Pool running through their heads now?)

Quick rundown of each class:

Tanker: Gets to drive our tank! We currently have a rocket tank and a laser tank.

Rambo: Nightmare gets to be Rambo because he is that badass. See page 36.

Commissar: Those of you with weak minds may find yourselves mind controlled by the enemy. Ratboy has the authority to shoot you on the spot. Its for you're own good!

Heavy: Heavy weapons are usually explosive or just have massive firepower. Heavy plasmas can cut through UFO bulkheads. Det packs can breach UFO hulls. And explosive weapons can hit around corners and deal extra damage to large critters.

Sniper: Snipers are used for difficult shots and wield the Heavy Laser or Rocket launcher. Both slow firing, but surprisingly accurate.

Medics: Medics tend to the wounded and stop people from bleeding out.

Assaults: Forward scouts and door-breachers. Armed with rapid fire rifle type weapons and grenades. First in line for body armour, which has proven to be surprisingly effective against enemy fire so far.

Redshirts: Redshirts are troopers with low bravery. When I recruit soldiers I hire them in large batches, anyone with bad morale and bad shooting skills gets the boot. Redshirts are people with morale of 40 or less, this makes them more likely to panic during combat. However some of them have amazingly good skills. Redshirts generally default to Assault, but I use them to fill in for other roles whenever needed. Redshirts are expendable.

Looking forward to my inevitable gruesome death.

Man alive, I just discovered this thread. HUGE X-Com fan. Tamren, you've done a fine job with those battle reports.

I remember I always used to tech rush to heavy plasma and flying suits to avoid chrysallids, hahaha. That, and since mission 1, always carried stun rods, equipped together with rifles. After a couple missions, amazingly enough, my soldiers would improve their aim even both hands were carrying weapons.

If there's room, throw me in please. If not, well, I'll be entertained at least with everyone's brave antics!!

I have one star! That's good, right?

Not as good as no stars!

Right?

I added ya to the list as a redshirt Kexx.

Anyhow I got delayed by some IRL paperwork, but I managed to finish all of the logistics.

As things current stand it is the 15th of April. Our tech level is middling. We are researching Hyperwave Decoder, or super-radar as I think of it. We have a leader and commander in the brig and lots of other tech just waiting for scientists. We have plasma beams and heavy plasma weapons.

Our main goal right now is to capture a psi-capable alien so we can start psi screening our men. Other than that we have to hold the fort and get as much income as we can to pay for more scientists and the workshop facilities we need. Research efforts are also going to focus on getting power armour, as we need it badly.

On the skyranger I loaded up all of our rookies and NO tank. The next mission is going to be amateur hour first contact all over again. But with pew pew laser beams!

Kexx
Coldstream
Feeank
Judge II
Vega
Lester
Ubrakto
Ataraxis
TheWanderer
Edosan
CleverID
AnimeJ
Deftly
Cube

Its rapidly approaching midnight, so I'll get on that tomorrow.

Woohoo! Loaded up and ready. Let's try not to die again before I can find out my psi level.
No tank? Really? Is this our punishment for something?

I just hope I'm not jumping into the fray with a band-aid box.

Please work me in when you get the chance. That means I'm hoping you guys die, suckas!

You should open up a base in Antarctica that all they have is tons of laboratories and general stores and just research everything like mad.

When can I start killing aliens? Starting to get antsy....

I just know I'll have the highest psi capabilities, but the lowest bravery/aiming there is...you can't have the whole enchilada...

To arms!!!!

Question:

How many bases do we have so far?
Are they separated in categories, i.e. research base, manuf. base, aircraft base 1, aircraft base 2, such, and such?

Heh fittingly enough Rookie Kexx only has 10 bravery, but is a triple star marksman.

We currently have two bases. If you drew a line between Vancouver and Chicago, our HQ sits 2/3 the way towards Chicago. It contains pretty much everything at this point. Our second base is going to be a workshop and it is built into the island of Crete.

I'm planning on making more outposts that are just radar and a hangar for interception. But this is hella expensive to do. Last time we had almost 6 bases and it was hard to pay for everything.

The 18th of April rolls around and we spot a UFO. Its a battleship! Our brave interceptor flies out to meet it! The interceptor gets beat to hell but its dual plasma beams finally carve a chunk out of the UFO and it crash lands!

Our skyranger is loaded and ready. We are sending in the B team to investigate UFO #18

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Tamren wrote:

You know how they say "you're the dumbest smart guy I know.."? I'm the pussiest badass of the world....not a problem!! Attack!!!

Can't wait to see how our first mission - battleship - turns out. As long as I'm not turned into a zombie, i'm good!!!

Mission Begins. We have landed on the south end of the battefield with our ramp directly facing the UFO. Great.

First off the ramp are AnimeJ and Vega! Vega takes a step forward... nothing. AnimeJ start to climb a nearby hill. Vega advances to the east. CONTACT! Its a snakeman! His back is turned. Vega only has a laser pistol, we need something with more firepower. Edosan is next off the ramp, crouches down and *KOOM*. His first shot streaks towards the snakeman... and falls short. Try again. Direct hit! The snakeman is thrown to the ground by the explosion! First blood goes to Edosan!

New turn, a snakeman crests the opposite side of the hill! AnimeJ is shot in the chest! A cryssalid rounds the corner of the UFO, looks down 6 gun barrels and wisely decides to retreat! AnimeJ, who is badly hurt and bleeding, runs back to the ramp and Coldstream patches him up. Behind him Cube and Ataraxis pull out grenades and advance on the hill. Vega and Edosan advance through the smoke and take cover behind tree stumps.

New turn. Lots of hidden movement. Ataraxis peeks over the hill but can't spot the snake. Cube moves up beside him to throw his grenade. AnimeJ brings up the rear. Deftly rounds a corner and spots the cryssalid! He opens fire! His autocannon barks and a trio of shots spray the area with shrapnel! The cryssalid is unfazed! Deftly retreats! Lester king tries to assist, but his laser bolts miss! Ubrakto moves beside Deftly and opens fire at short range! But his shots also miss! FFFFFFF. Coldstream fires a hail mary shot with a stunbomb but it lands short. No one else has a shot!

New turn. The grenade on the hill detonates with a *WHUMP* obliterating several trees. Of the snakeman there is no sign. Another snakeman appears to the northwest and takes a shot at Deftly's back! The shot goes wide and hits the hull. Edosan and Vega meanwhile are still keeping lookout over to the east. A cryssalid emerges from the darkness, but Vega is ready! He raises his laser pistol and double taps the Cryssalid in the face LIKE A BOSS.

Vega starts to advance, but immediatly spots another cryssalid! He drops back into cover and opens fire! This time his single hit smacks the cryssalid in the chest! Edosan assists, but the cryssalid tanks his cannon shot too! We only have one sniper with line of sight, so Wanderer takes aim from the ramp... *SKPEW*. Wanderers heavy laser bolt lands in the crater left by the previous two and the cryssalid falls in a heap! Meanwhile Cube advances up the hill through the smoke left by the grenade. He spots the snakeman on the far side and guns him down with heavy plasma! Behind him AnimeJ and Ataraxis open fire on the snakeman just barely visible past the UFO hull to the west. Laser bolts spatter all over the area, but no hits. CleverID mashes down the trigger of his gun and manages to tag the snake on his 7th shot! We advance.

New turn. Ubrakto and Lester ready some detpacks to breach the UFO hull. Ubrakto throws his against the UFO and everyone else takes cover.

New turn. The pack detonates, blasting a crater in the ground and making a breach. Lester throws his as the gravity lift...

New turn. KABOOM, the second pack detonates and knocks one of the doors off. A stun bomb shrieks out of the gap and over Ubraktos head! Ubrakto returns fire into the darkness and hits... something. Kexx charges through the first breach and up an engine room lift. He rises into a hallway, only to find a snakeman with his back turned! Kexx guns him down from behind in a flurry of laser bolts! Wanderer and Clever ID move inside and take up positions.

Meanwhile at the gravity lift Edosan and Ubrakto tiptoe inside the wrecked doors. Edosan spots something lurking on the second level. He fires his cannon up through the lift and the shot hits the second floor ceiling! Ubrakto rises to scan the area and finds a snakeman engineer bleeding and out cold. Good thing too because he had a blaster launcher. After finishing their sweep of the outside area the rest of our units converge on the lift.

New turn. A snakeman emerges from a doorway and guns down Ubrakto! CleverID ducks into another door and flanks the snakeman from behind! The snakeman is caught by surprise and CleverID guns him down! The rest of the squad piles into the UFO, taking up positions on the second and third floor.

New turn. The engineer snakeman wakes up and runs around in a panic. CleverID takes out his stun stick and tazers the alien down. We breach several rooms but find nothing. Coldstream joins our team on the third floor and pulls out his motion detector.

New turn. A snakeman enters the gravity lift room! AnimeJ sticks the barrel of his rifle against the snakemans head and blows his brains all over Edosan! Coldstream checks the tracker, movement to the north and southeast... AnimeJ charges through the door and comes face to face with a snakeman!

He opens fire! The snakeman tanks two laser bolts to the chest!

... but not the next three. Alien down!

Next up Judge the second exits to the west. Turns to the north and spots a snakeman with a blaster launcher! His heavy laser makes short work of the alien and its head explodes into a shower of green mist!

New turn. Coldstream checks the tracker again. Still more movement to the south, probably in the ships bridge. Deftly exits the lift and spots a cryssalid lurking near the bridge! His autocannon barks but the shells hit wide and shrapnel bounces off of the bugs back! AnimeJ rounds the corner and opens fire, his third shot takes off its leg at the knee and the cryssalid is down! Meanwhile on the other side Judge crouches at the intersection and Edosan fires a shell over his head and down the corridor. The shell explodes and rakes the area with shrapnel.

New turn. A snakeman appears and fires a shot at Judge's head! Judge ducks at the last second and returns fire! The snakeman is drilled though the chest and drops! AnimeJ advances, rounds the corner and flanks a second snakeman! AnimeJ guns him down from behind!

New turn. A navigator on the bridge panicks and AnimeJ easily moves in and tazers it to the ground.

UFO Secure! At the loss of Ubrakto we managed to kill 13 aliens and capture 2. We salvaged a mostly complete battleship, but only one reactor survived the crash.

Wanderer and Feralmonkey have become Sergeants. And Milkman has been promoted to Captain! Didn't you guys do almost nothing this mission?!

Anyway our rookies have acquitted themselves well. Except for Ubrakto, bad luck dying twice in a row.

Well ya got you're first kill at least! We got damn lucky that most of the cryssalids were beyond arms reach and a lot of the snakemen were facing the wrong way.

Thats it for tonight.

Tamren wrote:

Maybe it looks that way to you pukes, but you wouldn't understand what it takes to command anyways. Now hit the showers, and no more lip!

Man, I am a serious badass.

Kill count raises to 1!!! Fantastic!!! Promotions for everyone! Drinks all around!!!

Denied. Until you've mastered basic chemistry using Spacechem, you're no good to us!

Damn you sir, You're not my commanding officer your merely the medic 1st class. I'm at least a gunnery sergeant.... actually i have no idea if a gunny outranks a high ranking medical officer....

Chryssalids, blaster bombs and only one casualty? Tamren is highly skilled.
