i downloaded the tile/asci installer of stone soup and click on it, windows asks if i trust this file and i say yes but nothing happens. i'm running vista64, does it just not work on that?

I'm not sure what the problem is but I can confirm that the tiles version of stone soup works just fine on my install of Windows 7 - 64 so I imagine it should work on Vista. You do need to install the files to a directory so if it is not even doing that perhaps there is something wrong with the executable.

There's just been a large update to DoomRL, which is Doom of ID Fame in roguelike form:

http://doom.chaosforge.org/

Already a pretty awesome, deep and fun translation, some cool new stuff has been added. Great for coffee breaks and longer plays, too.

I have a hankering to play me a Roguelike again... it's been a while. I've played Nethack and ADOM in the past, but never got very far. I installed Lambda Rogue last night, and it's alright if not a bit on the simple/generic side.... perhaps it picks up?

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a good starter Roguelike... preferably with a tileset (sorry, purists) although that's not absolutely required. I'd like variety in the game play, although not a soul-crushing amount like some of the games I've seen.

(P.S. If this has been asked previously in this thread: yes, I'm a filthy skimmer)

You want Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/do...

Very well-made, very polished, great tutorial, great default tileset, lots of customization options and tons and tons of interesting commentary and tips out there. Plus online competitions through a telnet server, but no tiles for that.

I agree. I think Stone Soup is probably my favorite roguelike of all time.

Also, I wonder if Portal could be turned into a cool roguelike.

Well there is this....

I should mention that Stone Soup has a fairly major update coming on 4/24.

Some details here: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/a-...

For that matter, the yearly tournament should be starting up in a few months. I wish they did those more often, they're even more fun than the normal game.

And there's also Desktop Dungeons: http://www.qcfdesign.com/wiki/Deskto...

Which tries to boil down certain roguelike gameplay elements into a single level of 5-15 minute dungeon exploration and vanquishing. It's really amazing how fun and addictive it is for something that on the surface seems so simple.

As yes - I've played a bit of Desktop Dungeons.... it's an interesting specimen for sure.

I'll grab Stone Soup and give that a whirl. Thanks!

I've been eyeballing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup lately. Do any of you pros have tips for a longtime Nethacker looking to get into Crawl?

Be a Minotaur.

There's a new spell, Passage of Golumbria, that acts like a portal.

The newish Zot Defense mode is cool, too.

Be a Minotaur.

Or a Spriggan Enchanter.

Do they play like a Nethack class or something?

Make the switch as soon as possible, you'll be glad you did. The auto explore and dungeon navigation system is amazing. The tutorial will get you going quickly and explain some of the differences in systems. Notably skills and abilities are much more interesting.

Is it as unforgiving as Nethack? Should I try to spoil myself or just let the game surprise me?

Never played nethack. Lets just say that I learned the hard way that some classes are easier to play than others.

My limited experience is that almost anything can work if you play to its strengths/weaknesses properly.

I had a fondness for Troll Necromancers for awhile, which basically translates to a Troll who things spell-boosted Regeneration and Vampiric Draining on a race that already regenerates is amusing. Necromancy is one of the few... very few... spell schools Trolls don't get ridiculous penalties too (instead only getting major penalties :P) You definitely end up relying on your melee often, and don't entertain much hope of branching far out of Necromancy.

I've won with Human Ice Elementalist (more durable than typical caster races, but not so far that it greatly nerfs spellcasting, that and the starting Ice book contains a few key spells to start you off with.) and Spriggan Fighter, who eventually morphs into a Fighter/Rogue/Low-level Generalist spellcaster that, backed by Spriggy movement speed and evasion can tend to handle most things life throws at him.

Then you are a saint sir.

Tagged for future reading and catch up reading!

Gave Stone Soup a couple of tries last night - great recommendation, thanks! Lots to learn, but it doesn't appear crushingly complex.

Also, the tutorial was particularly well done.

Agreed; it even killed me, so I was properly prepared for real games!

Looks like the Stone Soup folks are putting together a special tournament this month (May 14-30) to celebrate the release of 0.8, in addition to their usual August tournament later this year.

If you weren't around for last year's, the basic idea is you get a "clan" of players together and try to score points by meeting the (mostly) victory-oriented objectives. Here's our clan from last year:

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/tourney10/...

Clans cap out at 6 players. We only had 5 last time, but we can always split into multiple clans if we need to.

Internet play also offers some other interesting features, most notably perhaps the ability to watch games in progress.

Soooo.. who else dares to have their horrible, bloody demises become public record on the internets?

I have to play my current 7.2 chars to their deaths before I switch to 8. But i'd be willing to join in a GWJ clan again.

Currently I'm playing a Merfolk Enchanter, which is basically a fighter-mage that casts improvement spells on himself, and a deep dwarf necromancer, which is as ludicrous as it sounds, but fun!

Also, the new .8 release looks pretty interesting. New God, new Race, new background, split a magic school. Dungeon ho!

I am a total Crawl N00b, but if you are looking for another person I can be a part of the clan.

I have ascended many times in Nethack and I even won a couple awards in the /dev/null Nethack tournament a few years back, so I am somewhat familiar with the world of Roguelikes.

Being in the clan was a HUGE motivator to get me playing more than I normally do, so count me way the hell in for May's Crawl Tourney!

The point .8 graphical tiles client got some nice updates, too. They added a screen that shows the list of potions and scrolls you HAVEN'T ID'd, yet and another that lists the skill aptitudes for your species. Both are a slightly spoilerish, but very helpful. It's a really nice interface.

I want in the DCSS tourney. There, hope you're satisfied Ferret.

Edit: I'm also going to guess no one else has found a way to play tiles online yet, have they? I'll play ascii, but I'm not gonna like it

Yeah, I only saw net-tiles support up to 0.6 Looks like it was a side project of somebody's that died off.
