Bastion Catch-all (now coming to iPad)

Never heard of Bastion? Never heard of Supergiant Games? Well neither had I.

Bastion is an action rpg from new studio Supergiant Games made up of ex-EA people who worked on titles such as C&C3, Battle for Middle Earth and C&C:Red Alert 3. Giant Bomb has been giving the game some coverage, probably because Greg Kasavin (ex-Gamespot executive editor & EA employee) is a part of the team designing it.

Apparently the game is playable at Pax, so I expect there to be some more coverage coming forthwith, but for now I leave you with the debut trailer, and links to a hands-on article and 4 minutes of gameplay.

Gotta say, I'm liking what I see and hear.

I really, really dig the narration voiceover. Love the old school style, I think this looks really promising.

Yeah, I think the narration stuff adds a great layer of tone ... and it isn't really something we've seen before, as far as I can tell. That 4 minutes at GiantBomb was actual gameplay footage, not an extended trailer. This is showing some promise.

Tagging. I love the art style.

Wow. This looks like a welcome addition to the action-rpg genre.

Interesting.

agreed the VO makes the trailer. sounds very old western, but with none of those trappings present in the art style or the game play. Interesting.

Art style looks pretty cool. I can't seem to find specifics; is this a downloadable for PSN/XBLA?

GiantBomb's listing only lists PC right now (I don't know where they got that info, though). Based on the control scheme shown in the bottom right it clearly is optimized for a controller, so I wouldn't be surprised for it to be on PC, PSN and XBLA. They might be going the Torchlight route with a PC first release (less red tape) and then console later.

Speculation, of course.

Edit: They'll be showing the game at Whiskey Media's Big Live Live Show (GiantBomb et al) on September 9th, so I'd expect more details there or whatever comes out of PAX.

Edit: Edit: "It's currently set for a 2011 release on PC and consoles." That's from Jeff in this article at GiantBomb. Also looks like the reason so much info is coming from GB is that it's currently an exclusive for them.

Bookmarked. Always interested in more RPG goodness.

Pics: Wow, more ARPGs for me to love.
Video: Does love.

I stopped the game play demo thirty seconds in. That was enough for me to be sold on the concept and short enough for video game virgin status when I first play it.

Looks promising. I'll keep an eye on this.

One of the first games we played on the show floor. I'll talk more about it when I'm not half drunk and tired.

Very positive impression though. Seems cool!

The VO narration stuff is really cool. This wasn't even on my look-at-list for PAX, and now I'm comepletely hooked on the idea. Still a ways off it seems, but I'm for sure interested.

Only half drunk? You sir have work to do.

He ain't no King Corona.

You guys have to remember that he's Canadian. Half-drunk is a really good job for those guys!

I need to hire that voice-over guy to follow me around during the day narrating the events of my life. I mean, my life is pretty epic, don't get me wrong. But it couldn't hurt.

The concept reminds me of old Enix games like Soulblazer and Terranigma. Interesting.

IGN has a preview up.

The constantly changing environment keeps the player engaged by not only dropping in lots of beautiful things to look at, but also because it introduces the player to the idea of how tentative the ground he stands upon is. Certain enemies in the game will knock out the ground from the world, or some parts of the game might feature entire sections where the world is collapsing all around you. Very little has been shown concerning this aspect so far, but Kasavin's enthusiasm is contagious, and I can't wait to see how they employ this design to change up the game's pacing.

The game is supposed to have some sort of cooperative option before it comes out, but Kasavin isn't ready to talk about it yet. Understandable, since my time talking with him revealed that they're still trying to figure out the best way to incorporate a multiplayer option. The team doesn't want this game to simply be a cooperative experience where everyone plays re-skinned versions of the same character, but rather hopes that they can develop an option that allows a variety of players (both skilled and not) to jump in and enjoy what they've created.

That's the most interesting stuff from the article, imho.

Heads up: They'll be showing the game on GiantBomb's Big Live Live Show tomorrow at 3:30 PST.

It'd be great if co-op had two narrators trying to talk over one another, getting progressively louder, perhaps occasionally telling one another to shut up, no you shut up.

This is the part that most confused me, though. Why the ranchero guitar and the western VO? I didn't see a point present in the gameplay, so it felt incongruous. Maybe the full game will flesh that out more. Still, looks quite interesting.

In case you haven't been following this game, or Giant Bomb, they've hosted some somewhat interesting behind-the-scenes footage, as well as the game's development progression (which they're done with).

And the finished build's first ~20 minutes, in the first 20 minutes of the show.

Looks like this game might give a nice challenge when the difficulty is increased. Something looks a bit off with the final look to me. The game's art all looks very clean, but the art itself is vivid, expressive. Seems a little at odds in my mind, but only if I focus on it.

Giant Bomb has definitely given a look into the game in a way we haven't seen (or rarely have seen) before. I haven't been posting up the videos because, truth be told, I haven't been watching them. I just haven't had the time.

I'm still rooting for the game and will probably be picking this up at full price on PC. Even if it plays better with a controller, I'd still rather have it on the PC for some strange reason.

Regardless, I think this sort of coverage is the sort of stuff I'd like to see about games in the future. People have said that there just isn't the much "stuff" to cover about games and I think that's bs. There's a ton of interesting stuff to cover about games, but it tends to be in the indie space as people get better access to indie devs than 200+ teams of people.

Thanks for bumping this up, cyrax, I've been meaning to do it for months.

Me too, lazy high-five!

Hmm, I think I'm doing it wrong.

All good things must come...later to PC.

edit:

Oh, and I should mention this week's Happy Hour on Giant Bomb will be free, and include another Supergiant Games interview.

And it's up.

It's great to finally see a diversity of emenies and weapons, and it sounds like the same will apply to most other gameplay aspects.

Hey, now that the embargo's up I can say that Bastion is a fantastic game and you would be out of your fool mind not to play it.

hype meter: pegged at 11.

This is just XBLA, right?

Which pretty much sucks..

xbla now, pc later, ps3 never from what I gather.
