Portal 2 Catch-All

Valve's music is always great, but I'm wondering now how they would put it into say, HL2 or TF2 based on events happening at the time. L4D sort of has dynamic music, but it's tied tightly to the zombie events.

Yes, I can see that struggle, it seems very specific to the setting of Aperture to allow for that bubbling gurgling in small parts that, when a solution is found, leads to a wonderful loop. The sound designers seemed like they had a lot of fun in general what with the auto tuned voices and the singing turrets. All small details that craft an experience rather than just a game.

I was looking into the music yesterday and I came across a really interesting interview with the main composer, Mike Morasky. A lot of the music is procedural and is based off of what they did in the other games that Scratched mentioned. He mentions how some of the environmental sounds / music add to the feeling of accomplishment, meaning that when you're completing more and more pieces of a puzzle, the music starts to fill out. It's as if slight aspects of Auditorium found their way into Portal 2, which is kind of awesome when you think about it.

I'd love for Valve to release an official soundtrack, but that doesn't look like it's in the cards just yet.

Great, thanks for the link

I kind of want this Woot shirt, but I have way too many tshirts as it is.

Kinda sucks for Valve that the week this comes out and they are doing all kinds of cool things with the PS3/Steam integration is the week PSN is offline for a huge chunk of time. Some people who don't play a lot of online games might assume that Steam is the problem.

Yeah, don't think anybody really knows what the problem is. Some big Amazon sever crash yesterday took down a bunch of sites too, but don't know if that's related to the Qriocity stuff that PSN uses or what. Official PS blog hasn't updated for over 24 hours now, and last it said was "1-2 days" to fix.

I want to earn some co-op trophies tonight, but it doesn't look likely at this point.

Even with all the visual cues and fewer portal placements it's interesting to see the different ways people solve the puzzles. I've done 3 co-op runs and so far they have been totally different. I thought I killed myself in strange ways till I played co-op with OG Still got to get some single player acheesements but I'm up for more co-op if anyone is interested.

Hey, I managed to kill myself in awesome ways, Mr. How-Does-This-Mic-Thing Work!

Anyone getting the dreaded SourceStutter while playing? I remember getting it with Half Life 2, where it will micro-stutter and replay audio for about a quarter of a second when first loading sounds. It didn't do it much in Chapter One, but it's happening frequently in Chapter Two so far. It's not game-breaking for me but it is annoying. I know there are numerous stutter fixes (one involving bypassing the audio caching system); not sure if any of them work for Portal 2.

I had problems with stutter in areas where there was a lot of gel moving around. It seemed to help a little when I turned off multicore rendering. That didn't seem to hurt my framerate much, so it was no big deal.

I got a little of that in the turret QA room. I saved, quit, and relaunched, and it went away. It's been just about perfect otherwise. Onboard Realtek something-or-other motherboard sound.

Haha, that was much funnier than Wheatly!

I enjoyed the single player thoroughly. Finished it last night.
I'm ready to jump into the MP with friends, but if anyone wants that professor achievement try to catch up with me over the weekend. It's just running through the tutorial level with a MP newb, right?

Look for me online, as I need it.

Also just finished the single player. If anyone hasn't done the co-op and needs a partner, feel free to send me a message on Steam.

I still haven't touched the co-op, maybe this evening after TF2?

I'm on Chapter 3 in co-op, I'll be up for some later tonight as well!

I have completed Multi Co-op and am looking for that achievement with a newbie. Let me know if you are interested. Gaald in steam. Big surprise.

Do you need to completely finish coop to get the Professor Portal achievement or can you get after you've progressed past the tutorial?

I'll be looking to finish up coop tonight so send me an invite if you're looking for something (even if I'm playing TF2). I'll also be looking for somebody this weekend to work on coop achievements.

I really hope they release some advanced map packs. I need more laser puzzles (and more complex).

Yes, you have to complete co-op before the achievement is possible.

I've finished co-op, but I'd be happy to try for some of the achievements with people. Just hit up Rebel Blob on Steam tonight and over the weekend.

Me too. I was actually disappointed in how easy the puzzles were. But despite that I really enjoyed the single player story mode and I'm having a blast with what little coop I've played.

No you haven't. We still have to do section 5.

Hah, that's awesome.

Oh my.

Speculation is that this is going to be a thank you from the ARG fans to Valve.

Out of curiosity, how many chapters are there?

From what I've seen, people suspect early DLC. In memos sent to games journalists there was mention of the Pneumatic Diversity Vents that were originally supposed to be in Portal 2, but never made it.

Gee the countdown led to... a broken page after some text...?

It was a thank you page URL. I don't know if it completely loaded for me, but on the bottom left it said the cake was a lie with a potato in front of the writing. A bunch of vegetation up the left side, then some writing on the top that I think was RG with something drawn to the right side of the letters. Like a big underlined X that's stretched.

And I think some blue gel on the bottom of the page.

EDIT: And now it's up for all to see. My memory wasn't that bad.

It was just a thank you to Valve and the indie devs who helped from the fans running the ARG solving wiki/IRC, but it was linked to as official thing and the website was crushed under all the hits.

Thank you Dr. Awkward for helping me get the Professor achievement in Co-op. I have a feeling that one may end up being pretty hard to get further down the road.

Looking for a coop partner if anyone's up for it. If you've not already done so, friend me up on Steam (link in sig).

Need someone who hasn't done the final levels of coop yet.
