Brink Catch-All

Likely 360 owner here.

I'll be getting this on PC for sure, but probably won't be playing with the goodjer crew due to moon ping.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. Yes it encourages teamwork, but at the same time it forces you or someone else to play a specific class.

For a while Ive wondered on how having cool downs on classes would work in a game. This seems to be an abstraction of that idea.

Something to bear in mind is that the someone else it might force, could be the person who ruins other games because they've got no incentive to change class.

Also, my broad view on team games is to win, one sometimes has to do things one doesn't enjoy.

One thing with Brink is that they seem to add xp incentives to everything. Your team doesn't have a medic? XP incentive to switch to medic, etc. I'm sure there's going to be good notices and incentives when you have to re-jig your team for an objective.

I'm in for the PC.. if anything we can get a solid 8 man team and roll pubs...

From what I've seen, class switching is pretty painless. Walk up to a terminal at a mission checkpoint and choose off the list. That means if you feel you've been forced into a role you can switch back as soon as it's not necessary.

Not sure that its completely painless. Looks like you have to fight for those checkpoints.

I hope they have enough choices so that I can make Jesse Ventura's character from Predator. All I need is a mustache and cowboy hat.

That's the real qualifier.

Saxton Hale doesn't shave, son. That's just how it grows. Including the magnificent moustache. And the crocodile teeth on his hat.

Looks like you may get your wish

Is credit to team.

So they now are putting up the "Get SMART" series on Youtube, explaining the gameplay mechanics of Brink. Pretty informative.

You know, I really want the Fallout pre-order bonus, but I know Best Buy is just going to screw it up if I preorder from them. No in-store pickup either, so I have to rely solely on them shipping it to me in a timely manner. And I know that is not going to happen.

I like that medics toss you syringes and then you can get up if it's safe. Don't get forced to stand up and go right back down.

Next SMART vid.

Objective-based gameplay, whee.

Any word on server hosting yet? Probably a deal for going with the same place we have L4D2 or TF2 servers. Mex or ragin, who do we ask about that? Surely we will have at least 16 PC players with this being Steamworks and all. TF2 on Mon-Fri, Brink on Tue-Thurs or something... could be fun.

I know this seems to be MP focussed, but I wonder how the campaign will be -- i.e., if it's also geared towards MP.

From what I've seen so far, it's going to be like the story mode in Mortal Kombat (2011); there will be cutscenes that lead directly into a mission that plays like any normal game, then will likely end in a cut-scene. The story mode has already been confirmed in the first video to be constructed from a series of missions. I can't really see it going either way.

The FAQ says

Q: What is the difference between single player and multiplayer?
A: Brink blends multiplayer, cooperative, and single player gaming together.

And the features page says

Two Sides to Every Story
Choose to fight through two complete story campaigns as either a member of the Resistance or Security. Experience these campaigns solo, co-operatively, or competively - it's your choice.

Blurring the Lines
Take your unique character online at any time you choose. Brink allows you to seamlessly move between single player, co-op with friends, and intense multiplayer action. Multiplayer takes the story online where you can play with up to seven other people (or AI characters) cooperatively as you take on the opposing faction or with up to 16 players competitively.

A: We don't really want to answer this question. If it wasn't so obvious we wouldn't have put it on the FAQ at all. It's pretty much just multiplayer, or multiplayer with cutscenes. Sorry.

FTFT.

On the plus side, the single-player "story" at least looks somewhat less batsh*t insane than the one for UT3.

Suppose we could run our own server if someone has a spare PC and bandwidth.

Maybe Ruki could stop idling one of his TF2 accounts and run one.

I will be very pleased if this proves a viable alternative to the broken, howling desolate wasteland of gameplay that is TF2 on the 360.

Aaarrggghhhhh. I want to get it, but there's so much coming out in May. I just hope it has a lasting multiplayer presence.

I would love it if SD can support it, improve it, release new content, and promote the community the way Valve have for TF2 over the years. That should honestly be the aim of any company who go into making a MP game whole heartedly.

Couple of things to inject here.
1) I am ALL over Brink. The Splash Damage guys are great (how many developers take you to a pub as part of the interview process?), Enemy Territory's rock-solid, and Quake Wars was the only time bots passed a Turning Test on me. (I played for an hour before realizing the entire server was bots... and only figured it out because everyone was too damn polite.) It was a damn shame they released ETQW right as Valve revealed TF2 to the world and stole their thunder.
2) My internet connection is a crime against nature: A DSL line bridged with two WiMax 4g connections by an unholy corporate router acquired in person by its manevolent manufacturers in Berkeley's underground laboratories, with packet routing config files copied from the Necronomicon. Placing a server on this network could well rip a hole in this reality.
3) The server on the network's running Minecraft already.
