Homefront - Catch all

Tempest, toss me a Steam PM next time you're playing and I'll try to get on.

IGN has (have?) posted a comment-rebuttal on their Homefront review. For some reason I was rather amused by the 'Commenter Threat Level' banner at the top of each comment.

They need to address the OP sniper rifle first. Games just aren't fun when you die every 10 seconds.

Its hardly OP. The other guns can 1 or 2 shot just as good as the snipers.

Edit: actually whats OP are the infrared goggles you get at 49. With them you're able to take people down long distance just like the sniper rifle, but at a higher rate of fire.

I'm in two minds when a company feels the need to do that.

Same, but i found it amusing that he admitted that this style of shooter isnt his cup of tea. It wouldnt have mattered if it was the best thing out he probably wouldnt have scored it that high.

I sent you a FR on Steam. I would like a few more people to play Homefront with.

Except there's a sniper rifle with an infrared scope that's available early on...

yup lvl 20 but it has low rate of fire. ACR with an ACOG scope and infrared feels OP. You have the best of both worlds then.

According to the Homefront website the two sniper rifles are the top two guns that players have been killed by the most. There is something wrong with that.

That goes for most shooters that have sniper rifles in them. Unless things have changed M24 is the gun with the most kills in BC2.

Strangely that's true on the 360, but the next highest sniper rifle is number 7 (GOL). On PC where sniping IMO is easier, the M416 is on top, with the GOL being 3rd (M24 6th). PS3 the M24 is 2nd.

Snipers for me really have never been a problem. Yes, they may get a lot of kills but all they do is camp. You rarely see a sniper going to capture point and that is where a lot of the BP's come from.

Once I get enough, I hop in a attack chopper and take them all out.

OH GOD I LOVE SNIPING IN THIS GAME

Sorry if I'm contributing to the weapon imbalance. Bought this game (360) because my wife's cousin worked on it for three years, wanted to show my support. Well, he got laid off last week. Turns out I really like the multiplayer a lot though. Great sound. Controls feel less, I don't know... "hydraulic" than COD. And I get a kick out of drones.

You should talk to Tkyl. Your wife's cousin will know him.

One thing I don't understand is why layoffs occurred at KAOS studies after the huge success that Homefront became. For the first week on the 360 there were server capacity issue since they had not expected that many people to be playing. While not being able to play annoyed me a little, I thought it was awesome to hear that the game was doing better than expected. I then hear reports that the game has sold over a million units (shipped two I believe?), and there is already plans for DLC and a sequel.

Why then after the success of Homefront have people been laid off? Anyone provide any insight into this?

If I've learned correctly, it seems that AAA development fluctuates in terms of human resources needs. There's a core creative team, responsible for design and/or engine, then there's a boat load of content developers (art assets mostly), that once the project ends, their task ends with it.

Assuming KAOS studios have no other IP on the pipeline, and that the sequel will reuse most of the assets from the first game, I'd assume there's would be a whole lot of people with nothing to do.

That's why companies like Epic and Bioware have multiple IP's going on. There's a creative team that's constant behind each one, and the content developers cycle between each project.

In addition to what oMonarca points out, there's been some pressure to move Kaos to lower cost cities and out of New York. So that may factor in as well.

This is the one thing that has kept me away from going into the gaming industry. This stuff happens all the time when companies finish games. Unless you have your roots in the company you have a pretty high chance of being laid off. So I will stick to modeling for architecture as it's more stable.

Yeah, I think that is most people's biggest worry in this industry. As oManacra mentioned, studios with multiple IPs can mitigate this by proper planning, when you are at a 1 IP studio it becomes much more common place.

The one thing? Tykl, Talk to us about two months of crunch. (unless the games media didn't report that correctly)

Ouch! Stop playing with the word-blender!

2 Months? I wish. Try the better part of a year.

I work for an architecture firm in the UK. Not sure about stable. The architecture business is going down the toilet here. You got a website (or is this something to do with computers that I don't understand)? Just being nosy.

I work for a museum design firm. I dont have a personal site since most of my renderings and media cant be displayed without the consent of the particular museum or company.

Anyway, crunch time for a year sounds crazy. I can only imagine long hours and weekend for an entire year. My hat goes off to you guys and anyone else that deals with this in gaming.

Tim Shaeffer (sp?) has been tweeting about playing Homefront, it's been quite funny.

GAME BALANCE
- RPG's now deal additional damage to HMMWV's
- Lowered m200 and m110 sniper rifle damages. The only 1 shot possible is now headshots.
- Flak jacket now has a lower BP cost, and a slight effectiveness buff.
- Diablo damage adjusted
- Weapon is taken out of ADS and accuracy decreases when jumping.

I love it when they say stuff like that without saying HOW. Up?

This is the PC patch BTW. Not sure is it effects consoles.

Figured. I assume the stuff will trickle over after cert.
