Gamer Podcasts

I put the CAG cast in the same category as RebelFM. Sometimes fun, but Cheapy's idol is Howard Stern, and it shows.

I like it, but also wouldn't necessarily recommend it to someone looking for another GWJCC.

I agree that they are both in the same category but I don't like the Cagcast mainly because of CheapyD and him seemingly having a couple episodes of just bashing systems for no reason and I also can't stand Arthur on Rebel FM but Rebel FM is ok depending on the guest and anthony is pretty good but I find it's pretty spotty because of Arthur.

I would recommend to listen to Giant Bombcast, Idle Thumbs, Retronauts, Player One Podcast, 8-4 Play, Weekend Confirmed, Fanboy's The Lunchcast, The Geekbox, All Gen Gamers. Gamespots the Hotspot and Gamespy Debriefing's are also pretty good.

I would say take a look at each of them and see what you think even one episode should give you an idea of what they are like, there are alot of good suggestions in the thread.

Ingame Chat

It's probably quite different from all the other podcasts listed, and it can be a bit hit and miss, but sometimes they have some really great discussions you won't hear anywhere else.

They used to have those great discussions all the time, then they decided to just take listener questions and ruined it.

I do still enjoy them but it can be hit and miss, especially when James goes off on one of his rants. Also, it kind of kills me when I hear something in the latest episode that I want to respond to but I know they've already recorded the next 1-2 episodes. Following the flow of interaction between the IGC crew and the listeners is tough when messages to the show start with "3 episodes ago you said...".

Retronauts - by it's very nature, it's kind of timeless; early episodes were much better

Avoid the C64 and Sega Master System episodes, painful ignorance on display. Also, the Suikoden episode was pretty ugly. Parish admitted up front he'd never played the series yet kept dipping into the discussion in a heavy handed way.

Plus, has any host ever sounded more like they don't want to be there?

We need our own wiki for this kind of info

Same feelings about Idle Thumbs podcast, not my thing.
Tried Retronauts from the start...just wasn't it.
Don't get me started about Garnett, blech.....

Do listen to Giant Bombcast, mentioned many times.
Also Out of the Game, but it's very irregular that they produce something.
Totally forgot about Quarter to Three ! Loved it, but I think when transferring things
to my new laptop, somethings went wrong. So added again for sure.

Will try Jumping the Shark and Joystick.

I love the RPS Electronic Wireless show for its sheer over-the-top britshness (much like their writing), but it's a bit irregular.

*cough* PixelCast *splutter*

(Seriously, though - Scottish accent. Scottish accent!)

He moved.

His doppelganger/twin brother has replaced him though. Their voices are identical, they share some mannerisms, and seem to have similar taste in games. Just a heads up.

I'm a handful of shows behind, but his brother was only on once that I heard. Unless something has changed recently. And the twin wasn't as annoying.

I keep thinking I'll delete the Geekbox feed because it's really not exactly my thing, but for some reason I haven't done so.

The first episode of Geekbox that I listened to, they spoiled the hell out of TV shows I was only a couple of episodes behind on with little to no warning. I unsubscribed.

Is Karen Chu still there? She's what killed that show for me.

Yes she is.

At first I really disliked Arthur but, like others have posted here, he has grown on me over time. He is really the only one on the show that cares or understands the technical limitations of engines and games and provides some pretty good insight. Its also nice to have someone pull in the reins when the podcast starts going off on ridiculous tangents. The others have gotten pretty good at calling him out when he seems like hes jumping on that high horse too.

Besides that the only other podcast I have been listening too lately is GWJ. All my other favorites have disbanded. Since DGR stopped focusing on games, I feel like I need to fill in a spot.

I tried listening to Bombcast but it doesn't really seem like a production, more like a few guys just sitting around a bar table talking games. I will have to give it another shot.

I think you have it right. They do have a "format", but it's very loosely followed. I just think the personalities work well together.

I wouldn't say that this is entirely... untrue. I'd even go so far as to suggest that it's a part of the appeal.

Edit: f*** you and your quick-draw posting, Mannish :p

Rebel FM is the podcast I listen to on occasion when I run out of other stuff. I kind of enjoy it, but I tend to get tired of it fairly quickly. I think my favorite part of the show is when Anthony starts talking about playing strategy games, giving narrative to his games. Listening to his stories makes me want to play Tropico 3.

I took a whole 7 minutes to respond :p

Thought id pop in and mention one that I haven't seen listed here.
The Van Hemlock Podcast. Two very entertaining British gentlemen talking about games. They do two shows a week that are about an hour each. Generally speaking its a what you've been playing show and a alternating topic/news show. Nothing groundbreaking for a gaming podcast but I feel the hosts make it worth a listen. The combination of wit and genuinely humorous commentary with pleasant accents make them my first podcast of the week.*

*Releasing on a Monday also helps.

I'm kind of picky with my podcasts: I only play PC games so console podcasts are kind of boring to me and since if I don't get to them right away the news-related ones get old fast so that leaves:

Three Moves Ahead (I wish I could find more shows with some good analysis like TMA)
A Life Well Wasted
Idle Thumbs

Jumping the Shark talks a fair bit about PC games. They don't do news either, so you may find it interesting.

That's a good tip -- thanks!

This isn't gaming related at all, sorry, but if people are looking a podcast that makes you think a little or teaches you a little, I would strongly recommend In Our Time from the BBC. I just wanted to give them a little love here.

There's something about a bunch of guys who are very close friends and all one the same page that make the Bombcast must listen to podcasting. Interestingly enough, I didn't like the Gamespot podcast when Gerstman and those guys were on it, but I do love the Bombcast.

There's a whole thread of non-gaming podcast suggestions here: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/4...

Actually, I remember one thing that bothers me about Rebel FM that annoys me, and smacks of hypocrisy:

They go to great lengths to talk about how bad video game piracy is, why it's what killed the PC (Arthur is ridiculously anti-PC), etc. etc. Followed by a "music break" where they insert an .mp3 of some band that they definitely don't have the rights to play...?

If you're going to lecture people monthly about how you shouldn't "take other people's work", then don't steal someone's music for your podcast.

I believe they are allowed to use those clips under Fair Use if it's under 30 seconds. They've played so much major label stuff through there that if they didn't have the rights to it, they would have had a takedown notice thrown on them by now.

Arthur's stance on piracy is a little hypocritical though (much like his stance on reviews). He's claims he's anti-DRM but will say he understands things like the Ubisoft always-connected system because "If so many PC gamers didn't steal the games, they wouldn't need to do it." But on the last podcast I believe, he proudly proclaimed that he pirates music but says he does pay for the stuff he likes. That reasoning sound familiar? Truth be told though, I listen to many podcasts where there are individual hosts I dislike but if the overall content is good, it usually outweighs that because you can usually just ignore the hosts you don't agree with.

I very particularly do not jive with Arthur (let me tell you about Vanquish...), but he's pretty much right about game piracy. Proof is in the pudding. His piracy of music may be damning, but the comparison doesn't really work because you don't have one section of music consumers angry because their preferred format is getting short shrift.

In order:

Giant Bombcast - Best comedic timing ever. The way they just roll off each other is pretty amazing. Sure do miss the Wii-ware/DSI-ware weekly roundup, though.

MidLife Gamer - This is as close to GWJCC is I've come across. To UK guys who are super upbeat and friendly. Funny too.

Rebel FM - Reminds me of the casual ease of being in your 20's - early 30's (in a good way). Informative. I think Author is spot-on 99% of the time in his game/industry/tech analysis. I like the relationship letters section.

Player One Podcast - Phil Theobald (host) is the best storyteller in the industry. He's great at spinning yarns about gaming's past. They focus a little too much on Nintendo and obscure Japanese software for my tastes though.

Weekend Confirmed - Garnett is passionate and mostly informed. Gets smarmy and close-minded a lot too.

Thanks Mr GT Chris for plugging Call Of Podcast!

My own favorite shows are:

Bombcast - tops for entertainment value overall, even when I don't agree with their opinions and stances on things.
The Cruncheons - the most bitter of the bitter NeoGAF posters rants a lot. Mostly about games. I find myself nodding along more than I'd like to think.
Warning: A Huge Podcast - more than you would ever want to know about Japanese gaming. Absolutely riveting, even though I have zero interest in 90% of what they talk about.
The Fanboys' Lunchcast - only nominally about gaming, but always hilarious. Very juvenile.
In Game Chat - real friends, real average Joe gamers, real talk.

You may want to check out the Nintendownload X-press. All Aboard!

I'm going to slap the next person who feels a need to recommend the Bombcast. We know already.

I might suggest that, for stuff that everybody's not already listening to, that hyperlinking to the show itself would go a long way. People are lazy these days, and we're more likely to give something a go if we don't have to bother with Bing or Google.

Am I the only one who was glad that got forcibly ejected from the main podcast?
