Grim Dawn Catch-All

I'm going to be negative again (hooray!), and it kills me because I loved Titan Quest, I love loot games, and I've been right on board with Grim Dawn since I first heard of it.

This looks exactly like Titan Quest. Same style, same setting, same gameplay, slightly worse character design. What am I supposed to be excited about here? For some reason I thought Grim Dawn was supposed to be more contemporary (in terms of setting, not design) but this looks like pretty much everything else, except maybe a bit bloodier (which seems to be the style of the day).

You can never make everyone happy. There will always be someone who doesn't like you choices.

Trust this man. He's spent decades being told he made a bad decision.

He hasn't been married that long. And Yellek seems nice.

But yeah, the people complaining about rainbows in Diablo are probably not the same people who would complain about a game being too brown.

If your saying that I can get more Titan Quest, but streamlined with better graphics, and some tweaks to the interface, I'm down with it. Sure a new direction in plot or setting would be nice, but I don't mind killing more mummies, anubi, and other similar baddies.

Game looks great but I really hope they improve on the animations. This is pre-alpha so I"m not too worried about it but so far it looks like an HD remix of Titan Quest - there's no "flow" in the movement, nor the fights. Still looking forward to this, I don't mind it being brownish, I like it that way. It will be bad only if they don't have enough variations in the environment and level design but I doubt there will be such issues.

Not to single you out, ebarstad, but it just seems to me that no matter what developers do they will get criticized.

I'm not really criticizing the game or the video -- just stating my own preference for a colour palette that goes beyond brown. Also, I imagine it's just this area of the game that's so brown, since the other video at least has autumn colours in it. If I'm going to stare at a game for hours, I'd prefer more colour contrast is all -- it's easier on my eyes.

That is a really good point. Contrast is a great thing in a game, as it lets you actually see things, and be clear about the game situation. Obviously the counter to that is when you want things camouflaged. Brown is a valid colour to use for a brown environment, there's no need to make them bright blue just because some people moan.

I'm going to wait until I invest in them. It looks like they have a solid product, but 2011 is a good year for aRPGs, so I'll wait until there's something more than weather sfx and cool grenades to sink my loot whoring needs into.

It can be like Titan quest all it wants, as I thought it was better than Diablo, but it must have random levels ala Diablo. I can't play through the same Greek, Egyptian, Asian, and Underworld scenes over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Hey, put me in the camp that likes more colour in the game. I'm just making a point that I kinda feel for developers these days where they get criticized about pretty much every choice. If they do it one way, group a is up in arms, if they do it the other way, group b is up in arms...

But yes, Quintin is right, you can't please everyone.

What really blows me about the complaints is that this is pre-alpha footage. This game is barely started, let alone being remotely close to finished. Honestly, for footage that early it looked bloody fantastic, and I've got pretty solid expectations from what we're seeing so far. If they keep going in like manner, they're going to make a hell of a game.

And probably release before Diablo 3 comes out too.

I am really interested in this but also quite wary because Titan Quest was a good game but couldn't touch Diablo or even Torchlight both just felt better and I still feel that Titan Quest is missing something, I will keep an eye on it and don't have an issue supporting the developer.

Been a while, so time for some footage.

This game looks awesome but has been in development forever. And with Diablo III and Path of Exile, I'm not sure I can take another ARPG.

...and Torchlight.

The video looks fantastic. This one won't be out for a long time so I'm not sure it is competing with D3, T2, etc.

I believe they're still aiming for 2012.

Has it been in development that long? It was officially announce in 2010 and opened up for preorders, which is probably why it seems like it's been in development for so long.

Than again, Iron Lore wasn't exactly know for putting out games in a timely fashion.

I guess it depends on how quickly they move on this. There's not even an alpha test out yet as far as I can tell.

Good point. Maybe 2yrs isn't so bad. It could be that I'm just horribly impatient

I dunno, it looks to me like the drive for that game is the graphics. "It's just like X, but prettier!" never seems to produce anything really outstanding.

Yeah, the game video says alpha, but that's some sexy looking alpha.

Looks gorgeous, but there's so many damned enemies it looks more like Robotron than Diablo.

Looking forward to this. Also check out Krater, it's in Alpha/Beta, but you can preorder through their website, download on Steam, and play the builds until release. My impression so far is it's ok, but needs some work still.

I played Krater for about a half hour the other night. Currently, the game kind of removes your agency from the fights since all three characters attack enemies automatically and you only really control special abilities. I'm not sure I like that. I think I was hoping for a control scheme more like Mass Effect where you have a main character that you control and two companions who will attack on their own but whose special abilities you can also queue up for cool combos and such.

On the other hand, I enjoyed TQ, so Grim Dawn looks like a solid purchase.

One of the big things pointed out there that I think folks lose sight of is that Grim Dawn is a *side project* for most of the folks working on it. Given that, I'm pretty floored at how fast it's coming along.

I'm actually working on a Kickstarter project right now. It is a fair amount of work to get set up and the biggest thing will be trying to produce a decent video.

Anyone want to form a pool for the first time someone launches a Kickstarter to fund their Kickstarter?

I'll probably go in for $18, but I'd like to see what they update their Kickstarter with as it progresses.
