Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Series Catch-All

I have one of the cheaper madcatz fightsticks but I replaced the crap buttons and stick with good ones. I like it. I also have a Hori wireless stick and I like that quite a bit.

Despite my disdain for 2-d fighters (Soul Calibur 4eva!) you all are really making me think seriously about picking this up, especially since it seems like I'd have some folks of various skill levels to get beat up by and who wouldnt mind sharing tips and tricks to an utter 2d noob.

...but then I think about trying to do these moves on the xbox controller d-pad and I cringe.

On sale. Note the improved D-Pad.

Also, there's a nub mode that changes the game to something more like smash bros, less dependence on exacting motions on the controller.

I've actually been using the analog stick and have found it to be fine.

We did a HatchetJob show where we discussed MvC3 amongst other things. Top-level stuff, which might be most useful to people checking out the game and want more info on what it feels like to play. Skip to 18:50 for the MvC3 stuff (but you'll miss out all before it).

I've been trying to get good with a Dante/Wolverine/X-23 combo. I used to use Ironman, but he's a little slow for this fast paced team, and the range on his air launcher move is pathetic. My only concern is I wish I knew what everyone's health was, because this team feels a little weak on the dmg taking stat. Usually when I have a good fight I tend to lose and I feel like it's because I'm being outlasted.

Character health and power chart.

Iron Man is one of those characters, like Deadpool or Hsien-Ko, where if you want S to connect after a H, you need to do c.H. His standing H has knockback, so that could be part of your problem. His repulsor blast assist is freaking amazing.

I played against someone who was rushing down with Ironman the other day. I had no idea he could move so fast. A lot of jumping up-away and immediately air-dashing back in.

Oh my god, I can actually do a specific combo on purpose consistently. Wow!

Tuesdays at my place has become Fight Night with a few close friends who want to learn the game. My roommate, who has an incredible knack to get good at things almost immediately, quickly discovered that he can easily dominate with Sentinel/Wolverine/Iron Man. Mostly this involves spamming Sentinel's drone assist while Wolvering rushes in (we call this, deprecatingly, the "drill claw style" since he often will just spam drill claw). What's nice about this is that he's willing to be the asshole who finds the first style of play that dominates, then we're all forced to figure the game out and learn how to deal with it.

Everyone else who comes has actually put in a bit of time trying to learn the mechanics and a few characters, so it'll be great when we leave him behind, since he'll still probably use this initial style of play as a crutch. By then, we'll all know how to punish it, which hopefully will drive him to figure out something else.

Last night the competition was fierce, and I was happy to find this morning that my friends had crumpled and were buying fight sticks and the game. One friend, who usually is very wary about buying video games, plopped down for two sticks, SSFIV and MvC3. I'm so proud.

(@ahrezmendi: By the way, I totally am going to extend the invite to you at some point, I just know you'd come in and destroy us all! Right now we're all super newbs, so I'm trying to shield us from the scary world of people who actually know what they're doing!)

Re: Sentinel + Wolverine dominance - This is a good thing. If you ever want to play online, knowing how to deal with Sentinel spam will be your friend. Also, Advancing Guard is your friend, that'll keep Wolverine well out of his effective range. If you really want to take advantage of it, run Tronn with her Beta assist (Genna Fire, or something like that). It's nigh invulnerable, his Wolverine will be running scared.

You've got my e-mail, that's the best way to contact me.

Cool. Give us a few more weeks to sharpen our swords and I'll drop you a line!

Jill and Shuma are out. Just sayin'.

Just got these suckers in the mail.

The last time I got a game guide was back in 1997 for Super Metroid. I saw these cheap on amazon and thought it would be cool for my friends and I to leaf through during our weekly MvC3 get together. But MAN, the MvC3 guide is com-pre-hensive! This thing is 400 pages long covering everything and anything you would ever want to know about the game. It's pretty insane. Here's an example of just 2 pages.

Pretty crazy.

I picked this up yesterday and I've been enjoying it a lot. Is working on combos in the 'mission' section a good way to get started? I'm try to not be that guy that just 'presses buttons' when in fights

Also jumping with a d-pad especially when trying to chain together air combos is difficult

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but on the PS3 version at least there was a patch that fixed some infinites as well as brought down Sentinel's health to about 3/4 of what it was before.

In general, talk of this game has completely dropped off it seems. Nothing seems to have even been posted when Jill and whatever became available.

I just haven't gotten into it. My son has played more than I have. TF2 tourney is partially to blame but there has also been little interest in an official game night (likely due to the poor lobby system).

I blame the lobby system.

I love this game and am looking forward to the next dlc characters, I also think the patch that knocked sentinels health down is amazing but If anyone wants to play send me an invite, Im always up for playing.

Yeah, except me:

It's on both systems, and it's in anticipation of the releasing-on-Friday Event Mode, which is a whole bunch of challenges with new titles, and absolutely nothing that players actually want (like, oh, spectator mode).

Sorry, apparently I skimmed too quickly.

A demonstration of Event Mode.

This has to be a bad joke. Capcom thinks that $@%! like this is worth prioritizing over spectator mode and replays? This confirms that they have completely lost touch with their consumers.

I don't have a problem with Event Mode, it's pretty cool and I have no doubt that Spectator mode is coming sooner than later especially since event mode seems like it was gonna be in the game anyway.

Just speculation on my part, but:

"Hey boss, spectator mode is taking longer than we thought. It's not going to be ready on time."

"Well we have to release something to let people know we're still working on the game. What can you do quick?"

"I can throw together a mode where you have to complete specific goals. And I might be able to hack the damage scaling code so that we can do 'only specials do damage' kinds of modes; that worked well for the SF4 tutorials on the iPhone."

"How long will that take?"

"Hmm... lunch time tomorrow?"

"Do it, then get back to spectator support."

I have no problem with Event Mode either, I just have a problem with it being prioritized over other features.

Vargen: Could be, and if Spectator Mode does actually come out, then I'll give Capcom the benefit of the doubt. However, I'm thinking back to SF4 and it's lack of more than 2 player lobbies, which never got added. At this point, Capcom's track record is 50/50 in my mind, so I'll believe it when I see it.

I can't control it! Ordered a Hori Real Arcade Pro V3 SA (the white one, for the 360) over the weekend, figuring my EX 2s would crumble into sand eventually. Should arrive tomorrow. Can't wait!

The game continues to kick my ass. As I learn more, the less I feel like I know! I am beginning to get a better feel for mix-ups and crossovers, however, and perceiving all the information that the game is throwing at you. Still, I only feel completely comfortable with a few characters.

Why a HRAP V3 and not a MadCatz TE?

Yeah, ditch the Hori and get a MadCatz.

Dammit, you guys! Let me be excited about my goddamn stick!

Here's are the reasons I went with the Hori: where I looked, I found it to be cheaper. On Amazon, the Madcatz SF4 TE is $250, which just strikes me as insane. I'm sure I could've gotten a different version of the TE stick (like the BlazBlue branded one) for the same price as the Hori, but the truth is I wanted an unbranded stick (that is, I don't really want BlazBlue characters plastered on something that's already pretty expensive). I find game art to be ugly plastered on the front, and I find the minimal design of the HRAP to be very enticing.

I like the proportions of the footprint -- it's the same width as the TE, but I like that it's narrower vertically. In general, I find the HRAP to be more aesthetically pleasing. The tighter placement of the stick and the buttons sounds good to me, too. Oh, and the matte finish instead of the glossy plastic.

Fact is, I'm a casual player. Just wanted something that looks and feels slick. I read many reviews which vouched for the HRAP as competitive with the TE, so the price and aesthetics tipped it. Let a scrub enjoy, dudes!

I like mine more than my madcatz, Jake =)
