GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

For Android users: I've been using Ventriloid on my Evo to do vent for the last couple of weeks, and it's run beautifully. It's got all the same functionality as the windows clients as far as I can tell, but doesn't use any of my CPU's bandwidth.

How does PTT work?

There's a button at the bottom of the screen that's labeled push to talk. It could probably be mapped to a physical button (or phone keyboard button if you have a keyboard)

Server is down right now, if anyone is able to get it restarted that would be great

Restarted and back online now.

In case anyone doesn't really check for Ventrilo updates, I just saw that 3.0.7 came out in late November. It adds "ducking" support in Windows 7. If you check your Communincations tab under your Sound Properties (Windows Control Panel, not Ventrilo) there's a setting there for how much other sounds get attenuated during voice activity. I just installed 3.0.7 and haven't tested it yet though.

[Edit] Ok, just checked it out a little. There's a Ducking button on the main Vent setup tab. You'll have to open that and check the options to use it as it's off by default.

Has anyone played with Teamspeak3? I used to use Teamspeak2 which was inferior to ventrilo, but it looks like they really raised the bar with Teamspeak 3.

Would like a Magicka channel with some subs in case it's not integrated in game.

I'll build a few right now.

edit: all done. I made four sub-channels.

Would appreciate a Monday Night Combat channel.

Is there a donation meter or something? You guys need a little money kicked your way?

TheWalt handles the money. I'll try and remember to ask him; I might see him at lunch, if Houston's icy conditions don't prevent me.

He does accept donations, I know that.

Also on Wednesday one of the people in my channel was getting a (literally) 90 second delay on everything we were saying. Anyone know why that would be? We moved over to Skype and it was fine.

No idea on the 90 second delay on Wednesday... wondering if that might have anything to do with the ice storm in Dallas, which I believe is where the server is located.

To follow up on Fed's comments, technically I don't personally accept donations, but you can make a ClanPay donation to the Ventrilo hosting company DarkstarLLC, which will go towards funding the GWJ ventrilo server. The link is in the original post. I don't have a donation meter per se, but we're paid through the end of 2011 thanks to the generosity of GWJ. When we get close to an annual renewal and funds are low, you'll hear about it. There are no immediate needs for donations for Ventrilo.

Thanks!

Cool. Well next time you need donations I'll chip in!

For the RIFT MMO channel, is it possible to setup a channel for each faction? One Guardian and one Defiant?

Looks like someone already made four sub-channels there. If that's not enough, post back and someone will make more.

Server seems to be done

Management page shows it as online and a reboot isn't helping it.

Did we forget to pay the bill?

Question for the general Ventrilo populace:

How are we doing?

With Cataclysm and BF:BC2 both kickin right now, how's our capacity been lately with the 50-slot Vent server?

It's been a while since I've used Ventrilo on a regular basis (in fact, I just now upgraded my client from 3.0.4 to 3.0.7 :P), but the GWJ community seems to be doing a pretty good job of sharing the collective responsibilities of administration.

Our server billing renewal is coming up in February, and we're covered for another year (with the excess donations from last years generosity), but if there has been any capacity issues, this would be the time to correct that.

I'll keep an eye on this thread through January and do what the Goodjer consensus commands. :)

Yeah, it's paid and there's a fair chunk toward next year's billing left over.

Just texted TheWalt to let him know.

On the Darkstar page right now

IP Change March 24, 2011 3:19 03:19:38 PM
Hello,

If you are seeing this message in your my.darkstarllc.com control panel it is because your on an effected daemon. We have changed the IP address of a couple Ventrilo daemons. These changes should be relatively seemless given the fact that your using a hostname to connect to your server. Whether it's the vxx.darkstarllc.com hostname or a custom hostname.

We have updated all of the relevant hostnames to the new IP's. This may result in a time period where it seems users are connecting to 2 different servers. Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do about this. You can have them temporarily connect to the new IP address directly (which is available in your my.darkstarllc.com control panel).

Regardless all of the resolution issues should work themselves out in the next couple hours as ISP's start to re-cache their DNS entries.

Looks like our IP address is 174.127.69.225:4018

I'm not on my home computer right now, but does v22.darkstarllc.com:4018 work as well?

If it does, that will prevent issues with them changing IP addresses in the future...

That works. I, and probably people having issues, was/were pointed at a 216.x IP address.

Yeah, they swapped IP addresses on us. Use v22.darkstarllc.com:4018 from now on, and we'll avoid this issue in the future (I'll change the original post).

Sorry for the inconvenience. Happy Venting!

TS3 is pretty good actually, but there are still some really nice features on Vent that it's missing.

Most notably there's no SFX feature to normalize the volume of everybody else you hear. That alone is enough to keep me on Ventrilo. Having someone you haven't chatted with before hop on and blow your ear drums because their mic is blasting ten times the volume of everybody else is for suckers.

Yeah I run a teamspeak server, and it works pretty well, though there are a few things Vent does better.

The one thing TS does better, though, is it actually has a great voice-activation mode. That's really why we use it....PTT while trying to keep up 300 APM in Starcraft is kind of a pain.
