Duke Nukem Forever Catch-All

What constitutes "freaks out?"

"Put me down, ya homo!"
"Where's Sandra? I can't find my cell and I'm totally tripping balls!"
"No means NO!"
Prolonged sobbing punctuated by occasional whimpering.

Who didn't see this coming?

I'm laughing, but not because it was 'cute' or because they are having a sense of humor about the delay. I'm laughing because, well because DNF was delayed again.

And I did expect this after reading Ars' take on it a few weeks ago, where they cited a lot of technical problems and some general 'meh'.

Notice how there is no year displayed on the sign.

Haaa Haaaa Haaaaaaaaa!

There is still hope for my prediction that it will slip to 2012..

I wonder if this was planned from the beginning.

If the goal is to look as inept as Broussard and crew, then it's a good first step. To be honest though, after Ars' lackluster, even disheartening feedback on the game, I'm kind of glad they are attempting to make it better before release.

What are the odds on a 2nd delay?

"We've seen what the next gen consoles are going to do and it's awesome! Let's make it a round 20"

I think that this new delay just highlights the strangeness of Gearbox's taking on the project to start with. Something that isn't a big deal for most games now becomes another chapter in a bizarre saga, and now their name is in the foreground. I'm still not sure that I see what they gain from putting their name on it for this last lap of a very long race.

Well, Pitchford worked on the game long ago and has a friendship for Broussard, so I think it made sense for them to pick up the game. As far as a business decision, well, do we know how much they paid for it? There was a certain amount of game there and if they got it for a budget price, then they probably don't need to sell a million copies to break even or make some money. The game is going to sell a certain amount of copied based on name alone. I'm not saying it's gonna be a good game or sell a bazillion copies (I believe that will directly tie into its Metacritic rating, sad as it is to say), but it should still sell something.

Oh, and perhaps Gearbox didn't expect Borderlands to be as big of a hit as it was and DNF is a good stopgap for them to try and come up with some new ideas for Borderlands 2. Complete and total speculation on my part.

I was thinking of the way that their brand as a studio could be damaged by the game's slipping--either on its release date or its quality. If the metacritic score is indeed as poor as it seems like it could be, or this date slip (and possibly more ?) turns into a real PR problem, even though we all know that Gearbox just banged the project into shape at the end, it's still their name on the front of the box, and I suspect/fear that the stink would linger on them.

On the other thing you brought up, I cannot possibly fathom what they could add to Borderlands for the sequel. That game was essentially "every possible gun thing you could think of." What will the new game's guns do, shoot squid and mustard seeds?

Since they've got the brass balls to delay this game until June, I have the odd urge to reserve this one.

So long as you're not putting money down or won't miss the deposit.

I'll reverse my responses.

There's no way they won't do a Borderlands 2 (2K isn't going to let them not). You're correct about the loot stuff, but there was a Diablo 2 soon after Diablo. They'll find a way, even if it's just more story (which the world should allow for) and a few more guns.

As far as their brand, well, I think the people who even know who developers are will continue to understand that DNF wasn't their game to begin with. They might take a bit of a hit if DNF flops in a big way, but in terms of the general populace I don't think it matters. Call of Duty sells because it's Call of Duty (for now). That's why Guitar Hero sold really well there even though the games themselves were pretty crappy overall, but it caught up with them eventually. If DNF flops I think it spells the end for the Duke more than Gearbox. I mean, whenever Gearbox's Aliens game comes out, I don't think the general populace will care one iota who developed it as long as the buzz is there as the brand recognition should still be pretty high.

At last glance, at least 4,405 people are outraged enough about Capture the Babe to sign an internet petition!

For the sake of curiosity, is there any precedence of an internet petition ever successfully achieving any goal, ever?

There was one petition that i saw get mentioned as part of the reason for a change..... But i forget which petition and which company.

The Bioshock PC Minerva's Den petition?

Only, that is still not out.

I knew of just one long, long ago, but it was for something insignificant.

I just hope their Aliens game ends up being good. Borderlands had shoddy gunplay, and friends have told me that it's not because of the RPG-mixing but that's just how Gear Box hit detection works.

So, ummmm, what do we put in this thread today?

I guess Duke hasn't run out yet.

When the MMOG Asheron's Call shipped, one of the most powerful monsters in the game was a cute little white bunny rabbit. After a couple of expansions said rabbit was no longer really that powerful. A bunch of their players started a "Buff the Bunny" petition and eventually Turbine did what they asked.

Though I'm not sure "MMO developers respond to player feedback" really counts as the same sort of thing.

And toilet humour:

On feces: I don't think I'll be partaking in that particular "feature." Rest looks fun though.

My wife have been cleaning out the cat's bedroom to turn it into a workspace for her jewelry stuff and I came across this ancient copy of PC Gamer from 1998 -- no idea why it was still around.

But flipping through it, I came across this article and couldn't help but laugh.

It will have a boat, a motorcycle, AND some kind of wheeled vehicle? We truly do live in the future. Nice find Quintin.

Full size is here, but the flash makes it hard to see even on that.

Oh wow, it's f*cking golden:

"Duke Nukem Forever's switch from Quake II to Unreal technology took six weeks, but it will ultimately save months of development time."
