Any recommendadtions for the NY (and surrounding states) area? I am not a beer nazi, but if it's flat like tap Guinness or too sweet, I am out. Just want to make sure I won't run dry over yonder.

Ommegang

Like a blade to the heart, ouch - I'm personally not a fan.

That's because you spent too much time in China drinking Xiaoxing Jiu.

Everything tastes like lead now.

And toluene and formaldehyde.

I always like to point out to people who complain about how heavy Guinness is that it is, in effect, a light beer; it's abv and caloric load are just a hair above Bud Light.

Alcohol by volume:

Bud Light: 4.2%
Guinness: 4.2%

Calories per 12 ounce:
Bud Light: 110
Guinness: 126

Brooklyn Brewery is my favorite NY area brewer

A buddy of mine bought a pack of Sierra Nevada Glissade Golden Bock this week and it was pretty tasty. It was a crisp bock with a nice hoppy layer to it.

I tried this recently and was impressed, as always, with Sierra. Also had some Bell's Porter the other day, which I usually overlook in favor of Bell's Special Double Cream Stout, and was glad I took the detour.

People think Guinness is heavy? Have those people actually had it. It's chalk flavored water. ducks

I agree, Guinness is the Budweiser of stouts. Drink it 'til you know better.

I don't think I would lump Guinness in with the "B" word. It at least has a flavor that isn't stale piss.

Still, I have such disdain for Budweiser that it's difficult for me to lower even Guinness down to it's level.

For me, that's taking it a bit far; I can name dozens and dozens of stouts alone I'd rather have than Guinness, but presented an option of BMC garbage or Guinness at a bar, I'll shrug and drink it. I was at a party at someone's house a while back and they were proud that they had both Guinness and Newcastle, and Guinness wins that one easily (which isn't saying a lot).

But yeah, Guinness isn't particularly interesting, and that nitro crap absolutely kills the palate and aroma of it. I hate nitro pours of anything.

My double-post requires me to post something relevant and, since somebody mentioned Bell's Porter upthread, I had Dark Horse's Reserve Special Black Bier (their porter) last weekend for the first time, and it is simply stunningly good stuff. I very much prefer my porters roasty instead of that molasses-y sweetness thing some have going (I'm looking at you, Anchor Porter), and the Dark Horse one was great stuff.

I think Newcastle isn't too bad. I never really buy it, but I would never turn one down if someone offered me it.

Again, "of stouts."

This is where we part ways, apparently: There are two breweries in the state that regularly keep their stout on both co2 and nitro (Hideout -- hazelnut stout and Frankenmuth -- Irish Stout) and both of them I prefer them on nitro.

You can hang out with my wife and brother in law, who prefer the flavor in the regular pours, but for me the texture more than makes up for whatever changes in flavor take place.

And to show I'm not really a snob, I like Newcastle from time to time Sweet and drinks easy.

This is the Dark Horse Porter -- the Black bier (which I very much prefer) is a little different. But I admit I'm totally splitting hairs here.

The head brewer and owner of Dark horse are both awesome people. Here's the head brewer showing us around. One of the best places in Michigan to visit. And yes, this is me flashing my "I KNOW THAT GUY!" epeen. Sorry.

I don't know, maybe we can call it "Over PRd mediocrity of stouts".

Deal!

I would tend to call brown ales (with a few exceptions) the paragons of utter mediocrity in the supposed craft beer world; they're never really that bad and never particularly good. They're and endless series of OK beers I never want to try again. Newcastle is the flagship of that particular fleet.

I like New Castle every once in a while but that doesn't make you wrong about brown ales, MD.

Yall might be ragging on Guinness, but I'm always happy around St. Patrick's Day because it goes on sale. Those 18 racks for <$20 is a pretty nice deal. Can't get the microbrews that cheap.

New Castle isn't bad, but certainly not interesting.

Something not bad and more interesting?

You had me at Lagunitas!

No fair comparing the awesomeness of barleywines to boring old brown ales. That reminds me, I'm out of Bigfoot. I've had a lousy week, I think I'll go buy some.

Samuel Smith's Nut Brown, one of my favorite beers

Yummy looking. I love nut flavored things.

...Yeah, I'm just gonna leave that there.

Make sure you pour properly, you want good head with your nut-flavored things.

I'm a big fan of browns. It's partly due to burnout on over-hopped beers.

This is a penis joke, right? If not, it should be.
