Homefront - Catch all

Okay, enough evidence to make this a 'wait for a price drop' title.

Will I miss anything if I buy this used?

On consoles there is some kind of online pass thinger.

This may be the first time that puts the nail in the coffin for a game for me. Wow.

I enjoyed the two maps I played tonight and had no trouble taking out snipers from pretty long distances even with an SMG.

*Shrug*

Does that mean if you don't have the pass you cannot play online at all?

From my googling, you are capped at level 5 of 75. There prerogative I guess, but it seems to me that they need to find a better way to 'fight' second hand sales.

This goes back to the whole game price thing. I haven't seen many new IPs from smaller publishers use this. I think because they know they're going to need good word of mouth and for the game to come "whole" even when purchased new.

To me this makes the game have one more hurdle to clear. So I'll wait until the *new* price is low enough that I consider it worth it. By then any momentum could have died.

I am really sorry to hear that the game is as broken as it is.

I don't think it's broken at all really.

I think the people that do think it's broken are just the ones yelling the loudest.

I'm playing on the PC though. Don't know what the console folks are dealing with.

Section 8 Prejudice is going to $15 downloadable multiplayer game after a failed first game. I hope they succeed. I'm pretty tempted to buy it myself.

I'm still having fun with the MP. I had much better connections last night on average. But I still don't get the feeling that this will be a long term game for me.

I tend to do better with the closer maps like suburb vs the bigger open maps with roofs filled with prone snipers. I just haven't adjusted my play style to that yet I don't think.

I still see some of Glanton's deaths where I was pretty sure I was shooting a guy that wasn't even looking at me well before the enemy turned and seemingly one shotted me.

Started playing one of the game modes unlocked at level 7 last night that I can't remember the name of. Seemed like a higher player count Ground Control with the Battle Commander stuff targeting players on streaks. That was pretty fun. Don't think I got past 2-3 stars, but it's pretty cool. Guy on my team got the max number of stars and a helicopter and seemed to just control the game with it. I'm hopping it's not an indication of balance.

Tried to register at the Homefront site this morning to look at stats and it's broken. Registered, got the confirmation/activation email, clicked through, and it tells me my password is incorrect. Click to reset the password, and the reset email includes a one time link that also doesn't work. Reminds me of the Crysis mess I had.

I'm on console and everything is fine so far. I'm enjoying the multiplayer

Nevermind: point made has already been counterpointed. Yeah yeah yeah, filthy skimmer.

I also wouldn't call it broken. Server stuff is improving a bit, but still need some work. To me it's no more broken than BO was.

It's just not the AAA game I was hoping for to give me something else to play long term. It has some cool ideas, but seems to try to stay too much in the middle between a CoD game and a Battlefield game. It doesn't look like a AAA game from 2011 in a lot of ways, either.

The Battle Commander mechanic seems cool, and I think I'll like the Battle Points idea once I get more familiar with what's worth the money and what isn't.

I'm sure I'll be playing it for a few weeks off and on, especially if people from here keep playing it. But I'm moving my sights to Brink for something to really get into. Or maybe Crysis, but I suspect that will be more small maps in the CoD side, and I'm not sure it's a game I care much about the MP for.

QFT

The rest of us are having fun playing online.

Sniper hunting is fun and profitable. It just takes a while to figure out where their favorite perches are, and then you can sneak around and shank em.

I'm having a good time with the game, both single and multiplayer.

Ya hardly broken. While the maps arent as big as BC2 they're still pretty damn big. They swallow up 32 people very easy. With the way they're laid out it's feels more open than BC2 with 32. Sinatar fussed about clutter, but i think that's a good thing. If it was wide open it would end up being a big sniperfest. As it is there's only so many places a sniper can be unless they get creative. With it being cluttered you're able to sneak around the snipers adn take them out like Trashi was talking about. Plus the game has a nasty kill cam. If you get killed more than twice by the same sniper you're doing something wrong.

Nothing's wrong on the PC platform!?! Did they actually try and use the bastard server browser they created? Do anything besides a straight refresh and the game will lock up.

For anyone getting it used for the 360, I will have a spare code in a few days. I rented it on launch day and liked it enough to pony up for the stupid code (I know I enabled them to keep doing that crap), and then bought it new on Amazon.

No problem here, but a bunch of us had issues trying to join their own servers today. We jumped into Kaos Homefront #47 and would get taken to a completely different server. Joining other servers had no problems.

That and the friends tab doesnt work. Yesterday i had people where i had no clue who they were showing up, but today it was blank even though i had friends playing.

Oh their PC servers are amazing. I've played on some where i had a ping in the low teens. Almost never happens for me in a shooter... the best i normally do is in the 40s when playing TF2.

I can't be 100% sure because the killcam is third person, but I'm pretty sure I just came across a batch of aimbotters. There was never any smoothness to their aiming movement. In the third person cam you could watch the aim jump instantly from one opposing player to the next with no looking in between.

As far as the server browser, I've had zero issues, and like Ranalin have had a sub-20 ping on multiple servers.

Is there penetration through garage doors? If not, I think I saw something very suspicious myself on 360. I died, and the guy was in a garage where he had no line of site. Twitchy movement then started firing into the door again (standing nearly touching the door). Didn't catch if somebody died to him on the kill feed. Then I died again from virtually the same circumstance with him still looking at the door.

Not sure, but it was definitely odd.

Neat! Learned a new term from Homefront in one of the newspapers. Green shoots!

Wikipedia: Green shoots is a term used colloquially and propagandistically to indicate signs of economic recovery during an economic downturn. It was first used in this sense by Norman Lamont, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, during the 1991 Recession.

It's always fun to learn new words and such in books, doubly so in games (since you most likely don't expect that to happen too often).

Ah ha! I just finished the single-player campaign about five minutes ago. I mentioned earlier that I was being meticulous, recording the game time with a program called XNote Stopwatch to see how long it took me to get through the whole affair. Including watching cutscenes, reading notes/final credits, and reloads due to deaths to continue playing, my total time spent playing Homefront's campaign was 10:03; ten hours and three minutes. This is my first ...err, 'war' game that I think I've ever played; I've never played Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, GRAW, simply because they seemed more focused on combat and less on nifty little touches that I always cherish in games like notes, journals, puzzles, atmosphere, environmental interaction, etc., etc (WAR game, duh! I know, I know.) That, and constantly being saddled with squadmates always annoyed me, so I just chose to avoid the genre almost entirely. I bring this up because I'm sure that there are some of you out there like me; we stick like glue to the endangered species story/character/audio log driven primarily-single-player-focused-FPS games like Bioshock, Singularity, etc. I decided to give Homefront a shot because of its interesting premise and the fact that Metro 2033 came free as a pre-order bonus via Steam.

Overall I have to say I enjoyed the game. I didn't much care for the weapon set (not a fan of fully-automatic weapons), but I did appreciate the variety and model detail. Whenever I could get a pistol or one of the semi-automatic weapons I clung to it as long as possible.

I do have to say that my enjoyment sort of started dropping a bit when I reached the final chapter; much like Dragon Age Origin's dark roads area, it felt more like a slog than anything. I hoped for at least one more awesome 'non-shooty' area to explore like the safehouse, but alas, it was not to be. I liked the nods to Half Life 2 here and there; the bridge segment, and the ropes that dangled and swayed in the breeze just like a certain famous monster from that series.

I enjoyed the newspapers and the way they expanded the mythos behind the situation. I was killed several times by happily running over to a newspaper to get a break from the shooting and read something, and subsequently getting killed en route by an enemy I failed to notice.

I wish they'd done more to expand on the plight of the common man; the tension between the resistance and the 'normal folks' was nice, but I would have enjoyed some diaries/journals to read from average people contemplating the breakdown of society, and maybe some commentary from the other side; all of the KPA wouldn't be 'bad evil bad guys', just people drafted into service, and a bit more humanity from parts of their presentation instead of 'yarrr bad guys yarr' would have been appreciated.

All in all, I don't regret the purchase. I consider it to be $25 for Homefront, and $25 for Metro 2033, and at $25 I feel like I've gotten my money's worth. If I'd paid $50, I might have felt a bit cheated. If you're one of the minority playing it for the single player only, I'd suggest waiting until it drops under $30.

Thanks! Advice taken.

Ditto, that's exactly the kind of user review I was looking for - I too tend to 'slow play' my way through FPSs, soaking in the atmosphere, but I'll take your advice and wait for this one to drop or start coming up in swaps/second hand.

Not sure about penetration but not all cover is solid. If there's cracks you can shoot through it. Well most of it. Just last night i got shot through a shed, but i checked later and there were holes to shoot through. I've shot between guard rails and fences myself before. Sometimes though i'll try and make a shot like that and have sparks fly in my face like i'm shooting a wall.

Even if there's penetration, it looked like a wall hack.

Still not sure, but odd.

If the hackers are this fast... of course it uses Unreal so it may be a new version of an old hack.

Surely not.
----

I had a much rougher time staying productive last night. I had some really bad rounds and some slightly above even rounds.

I was level 12 and nearly every body else was 25+. Maybe it's the Battle Commander game types that make matchmaking so frustrating for people that have just opened those game types.

I continue to enjoy the CQB maps and get frustrated on the more open ones.

If it was someone other than a sniper i may agree, but the m200 has a infrared scope on it. You'll see body parts glowing through cracks all the time.

It was an AR.
