Pokemon Gotta Catch-Em-All

Pages

THIS THREAD IS NOW A GENERIC POKEMON THREAD. YAY!

Maybe I missed a post or rule that said "No one make a Pokemon thread EVAR", but I was surprised not to see one.

I've been sitting on the fence about this one myself, but then I read The Escapist review and, well...

he villainous team is actually a fanatical animal-rights organization who believes trainers who use Pokémon are mistreating them and that the monsters must be liberated from the humans who enslave them.

This is the first time Pokemon has been doing such social commentary.

Add on that all the changes to the combat system to try and speed it up and the fact that it's all brand-new Poke`mon (until you beat it), well, yeah, that's pretty enticing.

I think I'll be getting it today. I haven't beaten SoulSilver yet, but oh well. This sounds like something I should be a part of.

I'm just feeling guilty about all the games that will inevitably be added to my pile and gathering dust.

I've been waiting for a while for this and I'm very excited to pick it up later today. I feel kind of silly for being so excited, but oh well. I've loved Pokemon since I was a small child, hehe. It bothers me when people say that the games haven't changed at all (i.e. The latest Weekend Confirmed riffed on it for about five minutes!), because these games have, indeed, evolved and matured over the years. Sure, the premise is the same, but there's so many ways to play Pokemon and so many new features that are obviously bringing people back each new release. It's damn near impossible to play the original when you've recently played the new games.

Digging in when I get home from grocery shopping. Oshawotts are go!

Oh man, the intro must be watched. It's full of religious iconography and weird tones. Good to see they stopped spending the visuals budget on love hotels.

I bought bottle of vodka and I'm thinking I should play my favorite Pokemon drinking game. Shot every time someone tells me my pokemon look happy.

I've been playing the games for two days. Definitely worth it.

Seconded.

This is going to be such a time suck, it'll be worth it.

How can you not pick the fire pig? It's a FIRE PIG!

Tepig's name made him tempting, as did Snivy's smugness, but I looked up the final evolution of each and Oshawott was the clear choice.

I also read somewhere that Water types are unusually rare in the main game.

I grabbed White, haven't played the game yet though.

My son says there's a guy in the town who can give you a pokemon that is strong versus the first gym leader.

Pokemon games are the only ones that make me regret not getting a DSi or XL. I really hate switching my wireless security to WEP whenever I want to check the trading boards. I think I might just save it for when I'm out someplace with unsecured wifi.

The game is noticeably harder than the prior four generations, which I consider a good thing. The first gym is going to be strong to your starter, and it's harder to grind levels to make up for type weaknesses. The experience points system now has diminishing returns.

They've taken a very different approach to your rivals. You're running into them a lot more frequently and they are taking part in story events, instead of just being a boss fight four times per game.

Go to the Dreamyard and talk to people in there. You get a monkey of some type strong against the gym leader.

The fire one (which I got) has lame moves. I also can't stand the look so I just leveled the normal I felt had the most potential.

I'm probably going to be looking for someone to do some trade-evolutions if anyone here is interested and doesn't mind doing the friend code waltz one last time*.

*provided Nintendo is serious about FCs being unified on 3DS

Starting the ball rolling with my friend code for Pokemon White, kicked off a Spreadsheet here:

For people to share etc.

Only just beaten the first gym so I'm a way of having anything to trade or fight with yet but always good to get prepared

Added mine, and added a third column for your trainer's name. Apparently you need it, it's the first thing they ask when you go to register a friend. I tried yours using Destrin as the name and the code provided and it wouldn't take.

Hmm, that is the correct trainer name...I haven't connected to wifi since I got the pal pad which might cause an issue...

I may have been doing it wrong, too. Who knows.

I'd try connecting after getting the pad, and double checking the code.

So, K-Mart really wants your business [3/4 of the way down on on this page]:

Kmartgamer is pleased to announce that from March 6th-March 12th, with every in-store purchase of Pokemon Black, you can receive 50% off Pokemon White. (Both must be purchased in the same transaction.) Pokemon Black and White are regularly priced $34.99 each.

So, I've never played a Pokemon game, having been a little to old to get involved in the craze. Worth a shot to pick up one of these? I'm a fan of addictive rpg-type gaming, not so much a fan of Anime.

What do you think?

I think if you like party building of any kind these games are for you, and Black/White are the best jumping off spot. The first two towns start out a bit slow, as they are half tutorial.

I wouldn't say these games are anime-inspired, at least not the dialogue. Contrary to popular belief they were video games first, a card game and cartoon series second. The game makers also hold a certain amount of disdain for the cartoon. The character and pokemon sprites are drawn by Japanese people, so if it's the visual style alone that you don't like about anime, maybe check them out first.

This page has visuals on all of the new pokemon, if you want to check this out. This one has the two choices of main character. I picked the girl for the first time, cuz...well..look at her! Combat boots, torn up daisy dukes, with the pockets intact even! I'm southern, it's my weak spot!

All their pokemon comics are awesome.

I'd suggest hitting the pokemon tag in the archive, and checking out The Gabriel Method and The Coming Apokelypse.

I know. The main reason I love today's comic is that Gabe summarizes my entire perspective on cockfighPokemon.

And this version looks like it's going to have the biggest legs for me. Especially because Nintendo changed Technical Machines from being one-shot items to unlimited uses. That change alone opens up a world of options for movesets, which means that I'm going to be experimenting like crazy.

The only disappointment so far is that Zubat won't be available until after I beat the game, which means that I need to find a fast debuffer/annoyer for my team.

There are a few bug/poison/grass types within the first two major areas. They sure did debuff/annoy me. There's a new bat, too, but I'm not sure it's that style. It's Flying/Psychic.

Also, if you can get online I could trade you a Zubat or Golbat from my copy of Pearl.

I love this change but the people in the first two towns REALLY push this fact down your throat a lot. 'Hey, did you know you can use a TM as often as you want?'

This is cool though, I think I have a stash of something like 250 TM's stacked up on Pearl that I was too terrified to use, they'll get transferred over as soon as I can manage it!

Well, keep in mind the target audience is actually kids, not adults. Kids who generally have an encyclopedic knowledge of recent entries in the series, so the game makers want to ensure that they don't miss when something that's a really big part of the game has changed. It's a good thing!

Unfortunately, you can't trade with any of the previous generation games until you finish the main storyline.

Oh! Reviews that I had read led me to believe otherwise.

I'm down with it, actually. I can't hold out for my old favorites (Cubone!).

Some of the dialog in this one has led me to believe it's for a maturing generation, though.

In fact, I'm loving the presentation as a whole (haven't even hit the first gym yet, though). I just wish I was able to play the game before dusk/nightfall. I'll have a completely nocturnal line up I imagine.

You can c*ck around with the DS's clock without penalty in these.

Also, the list of wild pokemon I've been referring to doesn't designate any as particular to day and night. They may have nixed it, or adjusted it so they spawn less frequently at certain times.

Just beat the first gym leader. Maybe it's been a while since I really sunk my teeth into one of these games or something, but my Poke`mon seem to be statting up slowly. Usually if they level up, they get +2 HP and +1 everything else, MAYBE +1 to another stat. This feels slower than before, and as a result has leveling up a pain since lower level enemies still seem capable of kicking my ass quite effectively.

Time to grind I guess.

The stat growth seems pretty much the same to me. Unevolved monsters just doesn't gain very quickly.

I may not be far enough in the story yet (on 2nd gym), but are there any locations in which to plant berries for berry bushes in this edition? I've been keeping mine until known otherwise. So far I've enjoyed the plot and that Team Rock-..err..Plasma seems to have a "righteous" value of Pokemon. Maybe the next rendition will have the option of siding with them for a multiple ending story sequence (imagine the replayability value!!!).
