NBA 2K11 - Wow!

Well, I played a few games yesterday on Rookie, and I started to get the swing of things. Today I took the Knicks at home vs. the Bucks (man I love NBA Today) since it would be fun to play with Melo, and I'm goingto see the bucks tke on the Celtics in Boston during PAX.

Today I played on Pro, and things went a little beeter, as I got out of the 1st with a 24-17 lead. Basically, all my points were in the paint, and I was 8-8 on free throws. But then I proceeded to score 26 points over the next two quarters, and was down by 11, 61-50. I just can't can't hit a jump shot, and I still have trouble creating offense. I had a better fourth, scoring wise, but I also gave up a ton of points, and lost 98-87.

right now, I am playng with it set to simulation, and real FT and FG %'s. What do you guys use? Should I switch to Shot Stick over Real, or will I be better off just learning with Real %'s. I can hit FT's not problem. But Billops was held scoreless. My only three pointer came from Melo.

Some of my problem is also getting carried away with my passing, and making some real dumb long passes on breaks. I turn the ball over a decent amount, but I feel like I am picking up what I can and can't get away with.

I'm now sticking to a Broadcast Cam with a zoom of 1 and height of 10. I'm feeling pretty good about what I am seeing most of the time.

I will say that the presentation really is so much fun. It helps that I am a big Kevin Harlin fan from his days of doing Chiefs football on the radio. But the whole package really works. I can't complain at all.

I think it is funny that I got an achievement today for taking out all of the rap songs from 2K Beats. Well, not for taking out the rap, but for making an edit.

What I have found is that I can't thread the needle in passing like I could in CH 2k8. That and they have changed the release point for shooting. Now the release point is very earlier. Practically at start of move. I recommend u get into my player and do some drills. Especially, "shoot around" that shows how ur release point was. That's how I found out about the correct release point.

You can turn jumpshot feedback on in the presentation option set. I recommend it.

I play with the shot stick, not real %'s. It's a personal choice really.

I'd also suggest acquiring a Josh Smith. Very useful, those.

Speaking of acquiring players, I wanted to ask...does anyone else habitually start new franchises to see how good they can get a given team to be? I can't break this cycle of starting a Timberwolves franchise and seeing if I can get them to contention, only to play five games and say, "No...I can do better." All without any sort of funny business (forcing trades, adjusting players' salaries).

Last night I managed to get Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant, and Josh Smith into Minnesota. The supporting cast was lacking, so I went back to the drawing board and wound up with DJ Augustin, Eric Gordon, Michael Beasley, Smith, and Howard. That sounds like a pretty nasty lineup to me, but we were 83 overall, only good for 10th OVR in the league.

Well with the custom animations, every shot release is different. That's another thing, is to pick a team and stick with them, and learn the guys' shots. And in the case of my player, to pick a player's animation you are already comfortable with as your own jumpshot. In my case this year, I went with Jordan's, since I was also using him to score a lot for the Jordan Challenges. I figure between that and my player I was going to be about as good as I could be on my release timing.

And yeah use the feedback graphic like Blind_Evil said.

I much prefer shot stick to %. It's not like every shot goes in, but at least when I release and see that green I know I did my best to hit the shot. Same with FT, if I hit the release I want to be able to hit most of them. I prefer the skill/numbers combo to just the luck of the numbers.

I still haven't started an association. I know I should at least run through some achievements. But I have to finish my first My Player season first. After running my mouth the other night about blowing out the Rockets by 39, we lost game 2 at home. Stole game 3 on the road though to get home court back. Haven't played in a couple days though, Killzone 3 is the new stuff taking up time.

Actally, I almost never do this in games. I find the AI involved in franchise play to be very compelling. I don't like drafting when I see just blatantly horrible mistakes that allow me to build easier. I don't like trading, because the AI is way too easy to take advantage of. And even trying to sign players via free agency is not really that challenging.

So I almost always limit myself to single seasons, and often turn trades off, so that it doesn't jack with the rest of the teams I play against. It's pretty much why NBA Today is my preferred way to play the game.

I will sometimes force a move that I think my favorite team should have made, or shouldn't have made. And then I play out the season with what I thought they should have done in real life. But I never try to load up.

It probably stems from all those years of being more consumed with replaying seasons via text sims, or back back n the days of cards and dice.

What the hell just happened?

I was like 7-9 from the field and 8-8 from the line already in the 2nd quarter against the Rockets in the playoffs. Then suddenly there was a G under my name. So I came down and pulled up for 3 on the break, nailed it. Got a steal, another 3. Missed my last couple shots at the end of the half, but overall I'm 9-14 with 28 points, 5 reb, 2 ast and 5 stl in the first half.

Was the G some gatorade thing? G moment? Hot streak? Never seen that before, even when I was lighting it up in Jordan challenges every possession. I know players have hot/cold streaks with the red/yellow/blue bar underneath them, but I've never seen the letter G appear.

EDIT: Yeah it was definitely the same G as the Gatorade logo on the chairs. But whatever the G highlights or something in the options I have turned off to speed things up, so I've never seen that before.

Ended up with 57, a new career high, and 15/15 FTs. I don't know if there's a way to see how many dunks I had but that was a record for me too I'm sure. At least 6, and almost all were And-1 as well. Damn what a game.

Nice game. I've seen the Gatorade G on my guy as well, if I remember right my guy was getting pretty damn tired, so I think it's saying that your guy should come out of the game to get some of that cool, refreshing gatorade!

Yeah, the G is to indicate you need a rest. It's very helpful for My Player, since you have no control over when you come in or leave.

Weird. Sure glad coach didn't take me out then.

Man I can't believe how bad the game is hosing me in game 1 of the Finals against the Heat.

I am 11-16, 5-7 3s, with 27 points in the first half. We are losing 42-33.

The rest of the team is 0-3, 1-11 (Carmelo), 0-2, and 0-4, for a combined 1 of 20.

EDIT: Won by a single point. 49, 20-30, 9-15 3s, 7 reb, 7 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk. Yes 7 assists, my teammates finally hit some shots. Harrington hit a couple 3s in the 3rd, but Melo was still 1-for-everything, and we actually got outscored by 4, so were in a deeper hole, down 13.

I came back in down 11, with 6 min left in the game. And we ran them hard. Tied the game on a dunk with 2:30 left or so, then took the lead for good with about 2 min. Still came down to the wire. We were up 2 with 30 seconds left, Wade dribbles the clock down, drives, dishes to Bosh, he misses it. We got the rebound and Harrington hit 2 FTs to go up 4 with 7 sec left. Then they ran that inbounds 3 in the corner play, and I doubled LeBron with Melo and he missed. But they kicked out to Miller and he hit a 3 as time expired. Glad my CPU teammates can at least hit free throws. We lost the rebounding battle by 14, still a miracle we won.

So, I've finally had a breakthrough, and am really starting to enjoy and get the game. I went to shot stick timing because it provides that feedback, which has really helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I also have play art turned on, and have gotten pretty good at following it. The final breakthrough tonight came when I was able to run a more controlled transition game and score some quick baskets.

I'm only playing on Pro, so I have some work left to do, but I really had a fun game tonight. I took Atlanta so I could roll with new PG Kirk Hinrich, and took on Minnesota. the best part was the runs, as I got to early 9 and 12 point leads, only to find myself down 51-41 early in the third. But Joe Johnson really got hot, and I worked my way to a 65-55 lead. I then rolled to a 111-90 win.

It was my first win, and my first time going over 100. The play art is helping me rack up decent assist totals, as Hinrich had 10, with 10 points. Johnson led the way with 27.

I'm playing full 12 minute quarters, and getting great games with all of the swings that you should see. But man, those are some long games. but it has also replaced the EA's NHL games as my favorite sports game. The best part is that I have just scratched the surface. Right now, I just let the coach call plays and do subs. Also, I'm looking forward to pulling off an alley-oop and really improving my moves with the ball. And on defense, I'm just switching to the the guy covering the man with the ball and trying to play tight. But really, I feel like defense is mostly just a random thing that happens.

I also completed the first Jordan Challenge last night. the best part was when a bell went off and realized how easy it would be to pick up the six assists if I just hit the open man when they double-teamed me. But really, I just got the ball in Jordan's hand early and made plays. I got into the fourth with a shot at 63 points, but no chance for 50+% shooting, so I started over once. The second time I just cleaned up. The process also helped define where open shots really are, and helped improve my regular games..

I might go back to My Player, but really, I just love the normal team games. I wish there were more classic teams. It's a crime I can't play the Knicks vs. the Pacers.

I'd love to be able to try to replay the 8 points in 9 seconds for Reggie vs. the Knicks in the playoffs!

He added two points after this when he was fouled at the other end of the court.

The game, for all intent and purpose, was over. The New York Knicks had a 105-99 lead with 18.7 seconds left in Game 1 of the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals against their hated rivals, Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers.

There is chuckling in the Madison Square Garden stands, as well as on the Knicks' bench. Thoughts turn to Game 2 because Game 1 is over.

So it seems.

THE MOMENT
In what many sports writers consider the most spectacular nine-second, game-ending scoring run in history -- as well as one of the most horrific end-of-the-game collapses -- Reggie Miller hits a 3-point shot with 16.4 seconds left, immediately steals the ensuing inbounds pass and quickly dashes out to the 3-point line and drains another three to tie the game at 105 with 13.3 seconds left -- all this in a dizzying, mind-spinning span of 3.1 seconds on May 7, 1995.

"We were shell-shocked," says Anthony Mason, the former Knick, years later. "We went numb after his second three. We became totally disoriented. It was like a terrible nightmare that you couldn't wake up from. I still think about it today. I can laugh about it now. I wasn't laughing then, that's for sure."

After Miller's second 3-pointer, the Knicks' John Starks is fouled on the ensuing possession, but he shockingly misses both free throws. The Knicks' nightmare appears to end when the rebound of the second miss is grabbed by Knicks center Patrick Ewing, but he promptly clanks a 10-footer. Then Miller, of all people, grabs the rebound and is fouled, leaving the Knicks and Madison Square Garden in stunned disbelief.

Miller begins taunting celebrated front-row Knicks fan Spike Lee and everyone else in The Garden. Then he makes two free throws with 7.5 seconds left, giving Indiana the lead, 107-105. The completion of the Knicks' comedic and embarrassing collapse ends in laughable agony when guard Greg Anthony falls down while driving to the hoop in the final second, setting off a wild Pacers' celebration.

Have you seen the "30 in 30" on ESPN about that rivalry? It's awesome, they show the whole interaction/background with Spike Lee and the city. Reggie is my favorite of all time!

I have not seen that. But around that time my roommate was a huge Knicks fan. So I grew to love using Reggie Miller in our sessions of NBA Live and NBA Jam. It was a really fun rivalry.

It's worth your time if you ever get a chance to watch it (they have it pieced together on Youtube, and I think ESPN streams it somewhere). I teared up a few times. NBA Jam was super fun as well. And I loved NBA Live because of the 540 dunks they'd allow you to do.

That 30 for 30: Reggie vs the Knicks... Yeah I watched it, recorded it, watched it again. My favorite player growing up and my favorite team the Pacers. Went to see him play a few times too.

Baffling that he didn't get voted into the hall of fame last week.

You might try 8 min quarters, like the Jordan Challenges. Feels like the right blend to me of reasonable scoring vs finishing games on time. In My Player, Kobe is leading the league at 24ppg or so, I am able to get double-doubles pretty easily and occasionally a triple-double. Games rarely reach triple digits in regulation, but they're still usually in the 80s. League leaders in rebounds/assists per game are within a couple of real world, and so on.

If you were controlling the whole team and calling plays those things would definitely be doable.

I did the exact same thing with the Reggie video (I watched it 2x in a row). My wife even loved it and she didn't know who he was prior. Reggie will make HOF next year.

Well I've been meaning to start a Center for a while, so I tried it today. And since my SG is really dominating I thought I might try All-Star difficulty. I remember some complaints about shooting % but I thought hey it can't be that bad.

It is. It's worse.

In the draft combine 3 games, where you get switched back and forth between teams with other rookies, my team shot 38, 33, and 43 % combined in the 3 games. Lost by 20, 30, and 10 points.

Got drafted to the Spurs, which is where I planned to be or trade to if necessary.

Played the first summer league game against the Wizards only lost by 10, but we shot 24%. 24 percent, as a team, in the NBA. I don't think it's possible. I don't think it's every really happened. Maybe a bad quarter, bad half. But not 24% for an entire f*cking game. Ludicrous.

...

Also, I need some advice from you other C/PF players out there if I'm going to stick with this. How the hell do I get the ball in the post? I post up but they never pass it to me. I call for pass and it says "bad call for pass." I go set screens for the guards, and then take their man with me back to the block so I have a 6-9" advantage posting up and they still won't give me the damn ball.

And then they will pass it to me when I try to cut across the lane or something and I will get the ball 15 feet from the basket. But if I try to dribble or post up, my guy will just lose the ball. Is there no way to go from facing front to posting? I know last year's game had a post-up button but that just does dribble moves now.

Right now I either can't get the ball or I get it way too far from the basket with nothing to do. Very frustrating.

I don't recall a way to return to the post after facing up. I could be wrong. I seem to remember Pau Gasol doing it to me a few times.

Switching from a perimeter player to post is very difficult. I'd recommend learning on pro. I'm glad I started with a PF and went to SG (it was a lot easier to get the ball in the post before the patch that made playcalling so prevalent in My Player), but even then I have trouble playing my PF if I spend a while away. It's a different ballgame, really, as there are a LOT of stats you're going to want to beef up before you really become effective. With a SG, you can really just beef up 3pt, steal, and handle and you've got a serviceable starter.

Generally, I found my best option as a young post guy was to focus in a serious way on defense. Just like in the real game! I maxed out all of the defensive categories (and O-rebounding) before any of my shooting skills were above 60ish. After that I went about getting some physical stuff, strength and vert, then dunks. Modeling your center after a young Shaq is not a bad idea.

With a post guy you have to make harder choices. If you find yourself getting the ball a lot from 15-20 feet out you might consider investing early in Medium range. It might just be that the Spurs' plays. On the other hand, it might handicap you when you actually do need to use your post game, because without 70 or so strength you won't be going too far against most centers. Dunk, Standing Dunk, and Vertical are all A) Expensive and B) important for dominance, if not being serviceable.

Your best friend as a big man is the offensive rebound, until your teammates have more trust in you. Grab one, throw a pump fake, and put up the shot. Hopefully you'll either make it or get fouled. Until you've put some points into handle and ball security, dribbling into or around traffic is a recipe for disaster. Also, sometimes you're going to have to accept a limited role offensively, particularly on team like the Spurs that already have a high volume set of guards and a preferred post option.

Some of your strategy should depend on your goals. If your goal is game to game improvement of your attributes, blocks are your best pal. A block will net you half a bar in the grade scale. My PF averaged 3.9 per game in his first year, led the league by a healthy margin.

Sorry if this reads disjointed, I was hopping around quite a bit as I typed. Hope it's some help and if you have any specific questions I missed feel free. I wish I could make instructional videos, but alas.

Edit: One other thing. Defensively it helps a lot to keep a close eye on who exactly you're defending. I don't have as much experience against centers, but you need to guard Mehmet Okur a hell of a lot differently than you would Dwight Howard. Personally my toughest matchup is always Josh Smith. If you give him 3 inches of room he'll dunk it hard and toss you to the floor (and get you a foul call) for good measure. He can also shoot, even threes on occasion, so you have to be very careful about falling for pump fakes. He's generally a nightmare to defend AND be defended by, which directly led to me trading for him in every association I run. Also had my PG traded to Atlanta.

Talking about all this inspired me to dust off my PF, now on the Hornets, to see if I still had it (I've been playing Association for the last two weeks).

36 points, 22 boards (8 offensive), 4 blocks.

I had a pretty fun NBA Today game today. I took the Knicks in their game at Miami.

At the end of regulation, it was 122-122. The points got high because I can't play defense to save me life. And on offense, Carmelo went nuts, as hit 11 three-pointers. I may have to go back to Real %, as I really started nailing my shots now. I held on for a win in OT 131-130.

Many of his three-pointers came as I made a comeback from 19 points down. I picked up two achievements, one for hitting 15 three-pointers in a game, and the next for winning a game in which I was down by 10 or more at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

I somehow completely lost the ability to hit free throws. At one point I saw that I was 3-21 from the stripe. It's pretty much what forced me to go three-point crazy late in the game.

I'm really loving how every team does have a different feel to how they play the game. And you feel it whether you are playing as them, or against them.

You're making me want to buy the game Jay, I think it's down to $30 now too!

38 and 31 percent my next two games. In the 38 % game we actually were shooting 46 after the first quarter and leading by 2. So that's how bad it got the rest of the game. Only time I've seen my team over 40 though. Guess the all-star experiment is over. What a joke.

EDIT: Much better. Both teams shot 38%, but I was only down 3 with 20 seconds left. We lost, but at least having a close game and having a chance is a lot more fair. Maybe all-star and higher is ok for association or whatever, but it's horribly broken on my player.

airicc8 wrote:

I come at this game as not much of a an NBA fan. So mostly, I look for teams with former Jayhawks or interesting games that are listed in NBA Today. So playing the Knicks with newly acquired Melo and Chauncey Billups ( a guy I liked when he played against the Jayhawks for Colorado way back when) against the evil empire of the Miami Heat was cool. But even my daughter called me on taking the Knicks because, as she said, "Didn't Chalmers play for KU?" So every time he scored, or picked up an assist, I would get that look from her that I was getting what I deserved. It was pretty funny.

But do know that this is a hard game to learn. It is not pick-p and play at all. I rented for a week when it came out, and it was clear that I was not going to put the time in to really learn it, so I held off on buying. Going into practice to learn the controls was a must for me. And it has taken several sessions, going back after I have played horrible games, to finally get a handle on the basic controls. But it does come, and it feels pretty great when it does.

But really, what made me give this a try, is that on top of having just really fun and compelling gameplay, the presentation sets the standard for sports games. My initial impressions from the gameplay videos released before the game came out, which led to me starting this thread, still hold up. I am seriously wowed by how it all fits together. Great overlays, great commentary, the music and analysis all feel like a genuine NBA broadcast. In just a short time, without watching much, if any NBA this year, I'm up on how a ton of teams are going. It's pretty crazy how good it is.

The only downside is that it hads to game-time. You can skip a lot, but not all. And I am hitting A a lot, trying to get back. things like Free Throw routines are neat. But you might take 90 seconds to hit two free throws.

So yeah, consider yourself enabled.

Hell even I learned some new controls this weekend and I've played a full season of my player, and most of the Jordan Challenges.

When you're in game, you can go into options and look at advanced controls, and there are just pages of them.

Something I just learned a week or two ago... L2+x(a for you xboxers) is a rolling inbounds pass. You know, when there's 2 seconds left on the clock in one of the first 3 quarters where you can't advance with a timeout, and you want to just bounce/roll the ball inbounds until it's close to half court so your PG can pick it up and get a decent look at a buzzer beater instead of throwing it up from the opposite free throw line where you usually inbound pass to.

And this weekend of course I learned a lot of post moves for my new C.

But another thing I saw, in off the ball offense, which you are a lot during my player unless you're a PG, you can call for a screen by pressing L1. Can't believe I never saw that. It would have helped immensely on my SG to get an off the ball screen and pop open for a shot. But even on my C it helps me cut across the lane open for a second and sometimes get the ball. Especially works well in the summer league when the team isn't running set plays all the time. Even in the regular season it might help sometimes, like end of quarter, when you're just stuck in a spread offense winding the clock down.

Got my C traded to the Pacers the other day. Not sure if I posted here, but I ended up restarting and doing the draft camp over since I selected the wrong type of Center, meant to go All-Around. Got drafted by the Bucks who are just so bad, I had to get out. Anyway played a few games and he's starting to get competent. The best part about both the Bucks and the Pacers though is I actually get plays called for me. Lots of post up stuff.

Maybe because there are no "star" rated players on the team, just "starter" class players?

I still never had a single play called for me an entire season in Denver. All about Melo out there. And when he was out of of the game, it was post ups for Nene or KMart or Harrington, and then after the trade it would be screens and jumpers for Hamilton. Crazy annoying.

Anyway I did finish up my SG playoffs in Denver finally, won the Finals over Miami. Visiting the White House was pretty cool.

Off-season my choices were stay with Nuggets or go to the Bulls or Magic. Decided to try the Bulls, as their weakest starting position is SG. All 5 starters will be rated in the 80s or 90s now with me there. Guess we'll try to break the Bulls own win record in 11-12.

Stele wrote:

Oi! My PF won the championship with 'em!

The whole time, admittedly, I lamented their lack of a desirable shooting guard. I liked the rest of the starters.

I liked Jennings, but there wasn't much else there I thought. And Maggette got hurt in like game 2.

Pacers seemed pretty guard heavy, figured I would get easy time even with Hibbert. They're actually playing us both at the same time some games, like twin towers. Other times they still Granger at the 4-spot. Of course Denver on my other player ended up doing that with Melo sometimes so I guess it can work. Gives us an advantage on offense, as no PF can cover Granger, but I just have to help him on D if they try to post.

I've put my Center for the Celtics on hold and have started up a scoring PG, who is more to my playing style. Finished the draft combine and ended up getting selected to the T'Wolves somewhere in the 20's, I was really hoping Portland would have taken me a pick earlier just for the home town draw.

I also dreaded the fact that I was drafted to the T'Wolves until I got there and found they have a pretty good core young team. Beasley (not a huge fan of in real life but OK in the game), Flynn, Wesley Johnson and Kevin Love are all good talents. Darko has even surprised me during a few games.

Even though I'm a PG I play most my minutes at SG, which actually fits my play style even a bit more. That and we have a ton of depth at point anyways between Flynn and Ridnour.

We started out the year 6-1 highlighted by huge wins in Miami, a close loss in Orlando and then a win against Atlanta. That lead up to a match up against the Lakers. We went up early on them and then they subbed me in to play against Kobe, I did alright the first quarter but it went down hill from there. Thankfully I had my best game to date having 14 pts, 7 reb, 7 assists, 2 steals, and a block on Kobe in towards the end of the game. I lead a late 4th quarter come from behind attempt hitting 7 straight points inside of 3 minutes but the Lakers are just to damn tough.

I had to share this clip. I got bored with My Player, so I figured I would try out the Association league play (trying to rebuild the Raptors), and decided to go to the NBA 2K11 forums to see if I can pick up some information. Someone figured out how to do this.
