NBA 2K11 - Wow!

I think it is my Logitech Rumble Pad 2, I don't think I can get into the player card as the game is not recognizing the pushing down on the right stick as a button. I've got to get a wired 360 controller ordered.

Hm, the default keyboard button for that was 5. At least it was last year. Not the numpad 5, but just the 5 key above the RT keys. If that hasn't changed, should be able to get at the player ID screens from that.

But the nba.com part in game definitely lists all player injuries and durations, so you don't have to do the player card thing.

During a game go to stats, should be an injuries sub section. It'll tell you his injury and duration there.

Trying it now, but it is greyed out.

If it's greyed out I think it means nobody on either team is injured. I don't know why else Rondo would be sitting, though.

Rondo is normally a 90ovr player but he has a -15 next to his name currently and is currently rated a 75ovr. I could only guess that it is an injury situation.

Ahh, the #5 key worked. He has a broken back and will miss 4-6 weeks, sad, sad news. Hey even with the broken back he is only 1 point less in overall rating then Nate Robinson, can we just play him please?

It's that time again, free agency.

My new PF is at 85 overall now, and won the title, MVP, ROTY, DPOTY, etc with the Bucks. There's some sentimental connection there, but the game doesn't really take that sort of thing into account.

Possible destinations with lineups and overall team ratings:

Thunder: 93 OVR with Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Me, and Serge Ibaka. Kind of worried that I'd have the issue there I had with Carmelo, too many stars.

Bucks: 84 OVR. I managed to get them to sign Vince Carter once, so that's the version I saved. Brandon Jennings, Carter, Corey Maggette, Myself, and Andrew Bogut.

Bulls: 92 OVR with Rose, Ronnie Brewer, Luol Deng, Myself, and Joakim Noah. I am pushing Boozer to the bench here, though he'll get his minutes. Kinda cold on this one because my SG plays here and is a much better fit.

Heat: 93 OVR. They'll stick Bosh at C despite me being 7', because I was athletic and therefore a SF secondary. Again, star crowding makes me think it'd mess up the flow of the league.

Hornets: 92 OVR. Probably the most intriguing along with the Bucks. They somehow wound up with the second pick in the draft, lineup would result in Chris Paul, rookie SG (78 ovr A+ potential), Trevor Ariza, myself, and Emeka Okafor. This team would be incredibly deep with David West, Kenyon Martin, Marcus Thornton, Brandon Rush, Tayshaun Prince, Jarret Jack, and Jared Dudley off the bench. Of the 12 active players there is only one rated below 71. Also, I'd have no trouble being the featured inside scorer here.

I don't know if anyone's interested in this crap but it helps me organize my thoughts to type it out.

Looks like 2K11 has been cut to $39.99 everywhere. Gamestop has it used for $32.99.

Is there an online code or anything I should be aware of when buying used?

I like the Hornets for you, out of those choices.

I got back into my SG this weekend. Down to 15 games left in the 1st season, and we keep flip-flopping with the Lakers for best record in the West. Both of us have clinched playoff berths already.

Finally had a breakout game against Detroit. Went 5-10 from 3 the first half, so I thought I'd take a stab at the 10 3s in a game milestone. Ended up 11-25 or so. And also put me over 100 3s on the season milestone. And then with about 40 seconds left I scored my 44th point, so I thought I should take a shot at the 50 point in a game milestone too. Got a steal and quick layup. Then a breakway layup after a Detroit miss. Then I intentionally fouled them with 8 seconds left, even though I was up 12 or so. Called timeout after the miss to move to halfcourt. Was trying to break free and drive but got double teamed... so I stepped back and drained another 3 at the buzzer for 51. 3k points from just milestones that game. Probably should have attempted something like that in a key game but hey you can't really control when your guy gets a hot hand. Some games it just comes easy.

As for the whole trade mess I complained about a while back, I replayed 2-3 times but never could get the team to not trade Rip Hamilton for K-Mart, plus a couple other smaller guys on both teams. It hasn't been as terrible as I thought. I haven't been shuffled to SF very often, mostly Hamilton gets that job. Or sometimes I still get PG minutes, which I don't mind now that I can call plays. Mostly it seems like Hinrich's minutes got cut, and we sometimes end up in the small lineup with Melo at PF still. But we've won like 10 of 12 or something since the trade so it's not too bad.

Nope.

I was thrilled to get this so cheap off Steam, but the PC patch got delayed again in Mid-January and, let's be honest, the support for those of us here has been non-existent. I'm seriously considering grabbing 2K11 for the 360 to get access to the needed patch/the actual living rosters/all the community rosters out there.

Yeah I had to give up on my dream of PC NBA basketball this year. I went through it last year and could tell it was going the same way again this year. Caved and got the PS3 one on black friday sale.

Kinda funny: I just started up playing a little again, after taking a month or so off. I was a few games into season 2 of the My Player career, were I'm the starting point guard with the Thunder. So, I start up, it's an away game at the Nets. And who do I spy starting at small forward for the Nets....... none other then Melo. I guess that was where he signed during the offseason. I guess he wasn't married to the Knicks after all.

Looks like the patch is being released tomorrow. From the 2k forums:

Hey guys,
The PC patch is ready for release and will be at approximately 11 AM PST on Friday morning. We're hoping we got as many DD's as we could, next year we're hoping for a process that makes that step easier.

Unfortunately we couldn't completely get around the bug above for the disk version of the game but an easy workaround was discovered. Most of you have probably set the language to English but those who haven't MAY have to reinstall the game in English to get the patch. Please do so if you run into any difficulty.

Lastly, I will be releasing notes Friday morning shortly after the patch goes live. Thank you!

Ronnie

Looks like the PS3/360 versions will be 29.99 at Best Buy starting Sun, if anyone was waiting for a price drop. All-Star Weekend!

Got back into this game a couple nights this week. Down to 4 games left in my first season. I had two huge payoffs with key games. Got my 25th double-double during one game against the Spurs for double points, upwards of 5k total after the game. And then against the Lakers I passed the milestone for 250 steals in a season, which was even bigger, ended up with over 8k points that game.

Finally passed the My Player rated 80 trophy a few games back as well. Now at 83 or so. And finally eked ahead of the Lakers for the #1 seed in the West. Still lost to the Thunder again a couple games back though and have them coming up in one of the last 4. I think they might be the only team I have a losing record against this season. Maybe I'll delve into the playoffs this weekend.

I've just got thru playing a couple of seasons of College Hoops 2k8 (thanks Jay'!). Great game. Now I'm starting to diddle with NBA 2k11. What I'm noticing it seem's more sluggish to me. Dribble, moves, put backs etc. Is that just to normalize that all these guys are good or something? I have yet gotten all the moves down, but when I go on a fast break, it's nothing like I had in 2K8 (with trigger down for sprint even). And moves to the bucket seem sluggish. And more times then not when I have a clear lane to the bucket for a dunk, it's so slow that it usually ends up as lay-in. Am I missing something? Or as mentioned earlier, just some sort of 'leveling the playing field' 'cause they are all good compared to college hoops.

I always had the same feeling when going to a pro game over the college game. It's one of the reasons I enjoyed CH 2K8 so much. the NBA game is slower and more deliberate. I wouldn't call it worse, it's just different. But I really do like the pace of the college game over the NBA, But I did just pick up NBA 2K11 myself, though. I really had not been playing NHL 11 at all lately, so I decided to check out the NBA Today stuff in prep for MLB 2K11 coming out. But then I haven't even put in the 360 yet becasue what has really been taking up all of my time is NCAA 11.

BTW, I got your message about NHL 11 through XBL. In one of the dumbest interface decisions in all of t sports games, you can only turn on Auto-aim in the pre-game menu. So when a game is about to start, go to settings, and toggle until you see the settings for aiming, and toggle it to auto. Even in franchise play, when you would use this for each and every game, you have to set it each time you play. There is no setting you can save.

O.k. Thanks Jay'. Well good to hear it's not just me. I'm sure I'll get use to the play..but wonder when I'll get all the keystrokes down for everything that can be done. Pretty cool, but maybe too much for me. I will start a 'My Player' just to see what that is all about.

NCAA Football has the same stupid settings with "Gameplan" and you can't even change those from a menu anywhere, you have to be in the play selection and then do it from there, every game. And remember to do it for both your first offense and defense possessions. Stupid EA...

I've been considering picking up CH 2k8, since there's no NCAA game this year, and March Madness is closing in. I'm sure I could get it for $10 or so. But I imagine the advancements made in most of the game play the last couple years would make it hard to go back to. And as much as I enjoy recruiting in NCAA Football, I worry that the recruiting tools from 3 years ago might not be as fun.

The speed thing mentioned in NBA 2k11 seems to be something similar to the NCAA Football's "minimum speed threshold" maybe? I notice the same thing, even with 91 speed on my My Player SG, that sometimes I can't outrun defenders, or even more silly they will catch up to me when I'm out in front. There are also some weird "correction" jumps that you or the defense will make sometimes. Like if you hit L2 to get in defensive stance sometimes you will jump a few feet from where you were almost instantly to stick to your man. Or same with using the right-stick to perform defense moves. Or sometimes even hitting steal or block will launch your player into some unrealistic animations.

I guess all that stuff doesn't happen often enough to ruin the game. But playing through an 82 game season you start to notice little things.

Finally got my first triple double. I've been so close so many times. 10 assists but only 8-9 rebounds. 12 rebounds but only 8 assists. Ugh.

Got this one in the first minute of the 4th quarter with my 10th assist, against Minn. Final stat line: 36 pts 14 reb 12 ast 7 stl 1 blk, 13/30 FG, 3/6 3pt 7/7 FT. Had one of those side goals to get 7 layup/dunks so I had a few blocked shots or contact layups I missed for the kinda low %. Oh well.

Also lost my rematch with OKC again. Dammit I'm starting to hope I avoid them in the playoffs, they really have our number. Looking back at the "recent games" stats in my player card, we are 0-4 against them. And my +/- are -2, 0, -10, and 0. Probably the worst of any opponent, as I only have like 5 - numbers the whole season. And the -10 game is when I blew up for 45 points, 20/34 shooting, and 3/6 from 3, so an awesome game really. Baffling we lost that one.

I don't do terribly well against them either, they're rough on a shooting guard. Harden and Sefolosha are both above average defenders.

I find little difference in play with CH 2k8. Same cool moves can be achieved etc. Of course not nearly as much flash. And no daily/weekly stat updates. But you can find current rosters thru there in game 'share' load system. Recruiting, training etc. are pretty in depth. Perhaps not as refined. But was plenty for me. The stat tracking for all conferences was amazing. You can even create your own avatar and try and get him good enough playing in the ABL (amateur Basketball league), to be a draft pick. I didn't go far in this for it got somewhat confusing to me and I was more interested in just playing my favorite bb team.I found a copy of it in Gamestop for around $6. Well, well worth it imho.

And Amazon is price-matching that, $29.99 today. And apparently the PC version has dropped to $19.99

Finished up the regular season with the #1 overall record. The West came down to 1 game separating Dallas, Memphis, New Orleans, and Utah for #6-9. I got to play Utah. They are a rival so I did want to beat them. But then the opening tipoff stuff was playing and I saw Jerry Sloan... made me a little sad, so I decided "f*ck Deron Williams" and proceeded to switch over to him as much as I could, pick him up in transition and basically make his life miserable for one game, and bonus, knock him out of the playoffs. He finished 2-15, 0/4 from 3, and we beat them by 10 easily. And one of those FGs he made was when I was subbed out in the 3rd, at that point he was 0-7. Don't think it was ever closer than 7-8 the 2nd half.

Although I wonder, do rivals give "key games" for every game in the playoffs? Cause if so, it might have been better to let them win and play them as the 8 seed. Oh well.

Playoffs, ho!

And also when starting up today I noticed that the rookie-sophomore and all-star games are up on NBA Today. Might take a break from My Player and run through those.

EDIT: Got MVP, RotY, Defensive PotY, NBA 1st Team, NBA D 1st Team, Rookie 1st Team... whew, lots of milestones. 21k points to spend now for the playoffs.

Stele wrote:

I doubt it. You get key games for going up against all- star players as well, and when my player went up against Chris Paul and the Hornets during my first playoff run, none of them were key games. The one key game I did get during the playoffs was for the one game 7 my team went to.

After taking a break for a month or so, I started playing again the last few weeks. Still on the Thunder, and apparently Sam Presti has abandoned his conservative approach to acquiring talent. Through a multitude of trades, he has so much depth that Serge Ibaka has been relegated to last man on the bench, where he's assigned 1 minute per game, and Cole Aldrich was sent down to the minor league team. Spencer Hawes is our new starting center, and the team has reserves such as JR Smith and Johnny Flynn.

The current record for the Thunder is 31-3, hoping I can break the NBA record for wins.

Lars wrote:

New record is 73-9, by the 2011-12 Kings. Documented earlier in the thread.

If you're looking to maximize your playoff point-gettin', the proper course of action is to either:

A) Lose the first three games in each series, making each game an elimination (key) game.

or

B) Win the first three, then lose the next three, then win the last. Same total of key games per series, at four.

Personally I didn't muck around too much.

So I started playing this tonight. And it is, uh, really hard. On Pro, I'm getting wiped up by the Cavaliers.

I'm just having a heck of a time running an offense at all. I just have a hard time getting the ball down low or finding an open shot.

For one, I'm not sure I like the Broadcast Camera at t his point, becasue I think I'm having a hard time seeing the space. I've tried some of the up and down views, but they don't seem to work as well as hockey.

What kind of views do you guys use? And what's the best way to learn some offensive plays?

To Jayhawker: The default camera they give you for my player is good, but I think it's only available for that mode. And I really only like it for when I'm playing with player-lock. The closest one to it for regular games would be "2k" which is a madden-style cam that has an option to rotate on change of possession in the same way. I still go with the default broadcast though when I'm controlling all 5 guys.

If you really want to learn offense, my player (post-patch) is good, as it forces you into running plays every possession. Or you can do similar in your regular games by changing the coach settings in the options to auto-call plays, and make sure the playavision is set to all. Then there will be floor diagrams of where you are supposed to stand, pass, dribble, screen, etc.

To Blind: I thought about that stuff, but I figure I'd like to keep my stats and W-L legit and I will get enough points to max out my player by the end of the 2nd season at this rate. Already up to an 85 or 86 overall during the first season playoffs.

Had a good start to my first round series against the Hornets. After spending all that 21k on various things including raising my 3pt skill to 80, I went 6/7 from 3 in the opening game, and something like 63% overall for first 3 games so far. I'm on fire. Also set a team playoff record with 20 rebounds in game 2, they just kept bouncing my way. Looking to sweep the series in NO next game. Praying that the Spurs take care of business in the 4-5 match-up against OKC, which they are losing 1-2 right now, after losing game 2 at home. Come on Spurs!

Stele summed up my views on both points pretty well. The My Player camera is called Turbo, which is indeed only available if you're position-locked.

What team are you playing as, Jayhawker? If they have a decent PG you might look into setting "Preferred Position" to him. I find that running plays meticulously tests my patience, and with a good PG you can just drive/bail and something will almost always open up. It does take time to learn the passing lanes and how to spot the open look for another guy, though.

Another option is to look into getting a good back to the basket post player, ala Carlos Boozer. IMO, high fliers like Blake Griffin or penetration specialists like Russell Westbrook are better suited for more experienced players, while post threat guys and perimeter shooters are nice for beginners.

I'm playing with the Celtics, since I'm a fan of Paul Pierce and will be going to a Celtics game while at PAX in a couple of weeks. Rondo should be good for PG play. I'm not sure how using Pierce will go, though. On defense I tend to stay with one guy throughout a possession, although it changes who I might decide to take. Pierce would be fun to use on player lock if I felt like I could drive to the basket enough.

I may try the My Player mode some to see how that goes as far as learning the offenses.

Jayhawker wrote:

Off-topic, but *&)%&%). I was *that* close to deciding to head up to PAX this year and a Celts game would have been an awesome complement. Maybe next year.

So the Spurs thankfully beat the Thunder to face me in the 2nd round. Swept them, although I kinda was hoping they'd win one in San Antonio. Oh well. I actually tried just running the coach's plays and not freestyling for most of game 4 and Melo just went off and we won anyway.

Somehow the Rockets swept the Lakers in the 2-3 matchup though. Was looking forward to going against Kobe. Then in game 1, Martin injures his back in the 2nd on a jumpshot, out for 2-4 weeks. We proceed outscore them 35-8 in the 3rd and end up leading by 40 in the 4th. The most boring Western Conference Finals ever is about to be played I think.

At least maybe Miami/Boston will give me some challenge in the finals.

Oh and the most stupid reporters ever in postgame. We win by 38, and the jerk asks me why my man outrebounded me? Are you serious?! We scored 99, don't think I've seen a game all season score 100 in 8-min quarters, and some idiot wants to talk about rebounds?!
