International GWJ Day 2011: Texas Edition

Ohio? Who cares about Ohio?

Since it would seem that International Goodjer Day planning has begun already, I figured I'd raise my hand to indicate an intent to help foment celebration. I doubt long-distance travel is in the cards for me and ever since Souldaddy found love (woot!), there's not been nearly enough Gatherings with Jobs in The Great State.

Anyway, this is an interest and planning thread so show your interest and submit your plans. I'll keep the OP updated as appropriate.

DATE: Weekend of October 15... which is a fine time to be in Texas.

LOCATION: Texas, of course. We might as well put it in the middle so that we give the fine folks in both Dallas and Houston an equal chance of escaping.

WHAT: There's going to have to be some BBQ involved somehow...

WHO: Well that's up to you now isn't it?

Hmm...depending on the scheduling and location, I might be able to attend such a gathering.

I'm definitely interested. Thread tagged.

According to that shirt, I don't live that far from Texas. But my GPS says the drive will take forever!!

I'm only about an hour from Austin now (not that I was much more than that on the NW side of Houston, but whatever). Count me in.

Count me in Grumpy!

I'm in!

I am tempted. Depending on work situations and whether Ohio is a better offer, count me as a definite maybe.

The date has been decreed. It looks like our count of interested parties is currently around a half dozen or so. Well that will be... intimate.

Will be watching this thread for a location.

Well if it's only a half-dozen people, I don't think we have to do anything more complicated than perhaps a park with a grill, or perhaps someone's house if we want to get all "LAN Party" about it.

October, huh? Well, I will be in state before then.

It's still pretty early...

I'll be there in spirit. My fiance is telling me that apparently that day I have a wedding to attend or else. So I guess it's pretty important

dependent on location, I might be able to make it if it does not conflict with my college classes.

I actually will be in Dallas this Saturday for a Phi Theta Kappa regional conference (Leadership conference) and I'll be free on Saturday from 5 til 9pm, but with one catch: I have to spend at least one hour at the state fair, since the organization has paid enough money for everyone showing up to get a ticket. Anyone got a good idea on where to meet up at (other than the state fair?)

I was thinking primarily the Snuffer's in Dallas next to the Granada (I know how to get here) or as a secondary, the Twisted Root Burger Co in Richardson unless someone else has suggestions.

Hmph. Can't believe I missed this thread for this long.

Is this still a thing, or is it going to be like that time you guys 'accidentally' told me the wrong place for the meetup that one time?

If it's Dallas I can totally con my wife into taking a road trip on the premise of hitting the In n Out up there. If it's Austin, I have less chance.

I may have made the initial post but for various reasons that make it not my fault (;-)), if anything is going to happen, it's going to require some sort of initiative from someone named not me.

We could do the In N Out bighoppa ... there's two that I'm aware of in the Metroplex (one on US-75, the other is in Frisco).

I also think it's weird that no other Texan Goodjers have responded to this thread, to which I say FOR SHAME!

I admit that the apparent lack of enthusiasm killed it for me. No doubt it was a tactical error on my part somewhere along the way but back in February, at least, I was hoping this would turn into something that could compete with (or at least be a pale shadow of) Penguincon. Meh; I'm over it.

Welcome to Texas!
Where everything is bigger...except for attention spans.

Also, I've been chastised for not giving enough notice, so any road tripping this weekend is right out.

I am just today seeing this thread, after the Conference Call reminded me about IGD tomorrow. My bad! Unfortunately, my S&T commitment has relaxed somewhat since my daughter was born. AND IGD is during football season! I don't know if this will be a match for SEC culture, but with my family, and Aggies in general, going to the football game is like going to church, complete with people checking up on you and measuring your commitment all the time. Have you given enough money? Are you one of those who just watches on TV? Oh, maybe you make the home games, but what about the away games? If you really had that old-time spirit, you'd be at every away game within driving distance!

Anyway, if this weekend is a bust, maybe we should start planning now for a big, souldaddy-style Texas S&T sometime in the future?

On one hand, it's great that there's an S&T that's not in the hottest part of the year. On the other, it's the day after our anniversary (today), so I can't make it this time, unfortunately.

I wouldn't be able to make it this weekend either. My kids are super active right now. This weekend alone they've got two softball games, a football game, and all-region choir audition.

I think the souldaddy way of doing it during the summer, while hot, means there aren't as many conflicting activities. Blame oily! (to the tune of "Blame Canada")

Love you, oily, if you're out there.

Just so we're clear, despite the best of intentions earlier this year, there is, to the best of my knowledge, nothing happening in celebration of IGWJD anywhere in the state of Texas.

well apparently i have been a member of this site for over 3 years, yet this is the first time i have been able to log on. that is, i gave up on trying to log in when the site kept rejecting me a long time ago and forgot about it until tonight when Sku Boi informed me of this IGWJD. sorry to be late to the party. Grumpicus and I will try to make something happen here in Austin soonish. Hopefully Souldaddy and other locals will get involved.
