Tiger Woods 12: The Masters

Just read this is a done deal and will be out early to play before the Masters, on March 29th. For the first time they are laser scanning the entire golf course. This is supposedly the first time the Master's has allowed a virtual course of theirs in the USA (Japan has had it). But it seems to me I played this with Mean 18 or some golf game about that time. It will have Jim Nantz and David Feherty as commentaries, virtual caddie and a "Masters Moments" mode. (source: USA Today, Jan. 5, 2001)

I was hoping it would play on the Kinect, but no mention of that as of yet.

Oh for...I haven't played a golf game in ages, but something about this is intriguing me.

The core gameplay of TW 11 was darn near perfect, so this early release probably won't hurt it. It will be interesting to see if they provide some simple improvements to the carer mode, like using a pro. They have now made it so that you can use your DLC courses in the game in your career, and added the all important in-game saves.

I'm probably in for this, but golf really does not need to be a yearly release. TW 11 sold abysmally. that's why EA spent the big bucks to bring in the masters. I wonder if this means the Ryder Cup mode is out? That would be a shame, as it was really a fun mode.

TW is a strange game. So much of it is so good. But t here is so much that you ought to be able to do, that just isn't in their games.

Seriously, why can't I take Mike Weir and play a season? Why can't I use points to create a golfer and use him? Why do I have to wear a funny suit to use the skills I unlocked? Why can't I create a custom tourney for me and my friends?

But man, using TrueAim, and the higher difficulty, the game is just perfection. If they get TrueAim into online play, it would be huge,

But the online tournies are not bad. I played through a season with some guys from OS where we just agreed to use "Play the Pros" match each week. Then we reported the scores back to the forum. Maybe we can get some early momentum and get some golf going here? the early release should help, as the fast few releases were in late June, and competed with MLB and NCAA football releases.

My roommate won't STFU about this, seriously. For the last two days, blah blah never been in a game before.

Dragon Age 2, MLB 2k11, Homefront and the most importantly the 3DS are coming out in March, what the hell do I care about golf?

What I was counting on! Jay' always has the interesting capsule review and the 'what's needed' views. Thanks man. Anyway, I will probably be interested in a weekly match or two.

Thanks!

Augusta.

Yeah I skipped TW11. 10 was good enough, with Motion+. Now the question is, will Move match Motion+ in TW12? It certainly seems like EA thinks it's possible. There's a collector's edition for PS3 only up on Amazon right now.

But hell, if the Wii still continues to get all the same courses for free, for $10 less to start, plus whatever they cost as DLC, I'm still going to have to lean towards the Wii version. A little less graphics for a lot more courses and saving me some $$ altogether sounds good.

No kinect support listed in the pres releases, so likely not there. If it was, they'd be all over promoting it.

Wow yeah on EA's pre-order page it doesn't even list the regular PS3 version, but only the collector's. Sounds like they are pushing that. Main difference seems to be "Bonus 12 Championship Courses Included." Wonder if that means they are leaving courses out of the Wii version?

It says new career mode, and all new commentary too. Hm.

Good thread on the official forums with a lot more features list here

One intrigued me was:

Choke Down on the Club:

using the right analog stick while lining up the shot, you can push it down and you can actually change the grip on the club, the more you choke down, the more yards it takes off the shot.

Sounds cool, if you always want to hit 100% swing, now you can adjust for that time when you only need 95% or are between clubs or whatever.

Thanks Stele! Great stuff.

This has my interest peaked. I played some of the Tiger Woods on the Wii last year, but I think I'd prefer the PS3 version myself. It would get me to buy a Move.

how long can they continue to use TW in this game? I havent been following his career lately but isnt he being trumped by some 20 year old?
They need a new face of golf, methinks.

I put a ton of time and effort into TW10, but I sort of feel like a massive sucker buying the same game and same courses over and over again. I seem to be on an "every other year" cycle, though, so maybe I'll pick up TW12.

Here's another description that may or may not have more then the link above that Stele gave, just maybe more compact to peruse:

From Operation Sports:

It says you can carry over xp from the previous year's game. Guess they won't let me import from TW10 though.

Hope they make the game harder. Tired of seeing players shoot in the low 50s.

I skipped last year but I don't think I can resist virtual Augusta. Hopefully they add custom online tournaments and user groups on the console this year.

I think I was averaging -10 to -12 playing on Tour Pro in TW10. Even playing like that my best finish in the online stuff was a 25th in one of those online tourneys where they crank up the wind and turn off the putting grid. Every other tournament I don't think I cracked the top 75. I don't see how people shot in the -20s without cheese/cheats.

TrueAim makes those kind of scores even more unlikely. There will always be kids that can ace a videogame. but the number of extreme scores dropped significantly for folks using TrueAim. This was a huge improvement in TW 11.

So what scores are winning the online daily tournaments (w/Tour Pro+True Aim) now?

Picked up TW11, most likely will pick up 12. I want to play it more than I did 12, would be interested in weekly tournaments

Just curious.does anyone have any comment on how the PS 3, 'The Move' worked on TW 11? I thought the Wii version did a good job, but that was the 2nd or 3rd attempt of getting it right. Seeing how 'The Move' was new to the PS 3, I'm curious how it played on TW 11, for it will no doubt be out for the Masters too. (which will give me pause on wether to get the 360 or PS 3 version)

Opened up my mail with a post from EA on a video of the career mode of this game. Wow. Looks great.
Here's the link again to the games homepage: http://www.ea.com/tiger-woods

The video is there in the middle with some others.

Go over to videos and on the right side you'll see the clip for career mode (&etc).

I doers look pretty cool.

I do wish they would just let me pick a pro and play a season, though. I'm pretty much over trying to build my golfer up. It's a near side game, but shouldn't be the meat of the game.

Actually, in practice, your idea has much merit. You get caught up in bringing your player along, and in my case, frustration sets in because I'm either not good enough, or it will take way too much time commitment.

I think the PS3 reviews were pretty bad concerning Move. Haven't heard any impressions of the new one yet to know whether they've improved things.

TW10 with Wii Motion+ was good enough for me that I didn't even buy TW11. And as much as I enjoy my PS3, I'll probably stick with the Wii for TW12 when I get it. For once thing, the Wii version always includes all the extra courses that they charge money for on PS3/360. Sometimes there's a good side to Nintendo's lackluster online presence and handling of DLC. I don't envision paying $80-90 for the "complete" game. $50 is much more reasonable.

And for online play they use EA servers and an EA login, so it's just as good as 360/PS3, for matchmaking, etc. Had some good online games on TW10 even back then and I can only imagine it's gotten more polish since.

Going by EA's recent history with Madden/NCAA this year, I'm sure you will be able to purchase some extra XP or boost items or a full level up from their EA Store for use in TW12.

Actually there are extra courses for the PS3 version. But the drawback to PS is space on the HD. Everything seems to need 90% install on HD and my drive is an original small one. But nonetheless I will go with the PS 3 version and hope for the Move to work o.k. I usually go to the 360 version, but I end up playing it solo, because all the benefits of XBL and GWJ really don't factor in. (I think the last time there was a regular group of us playing together on the Xbox was with Links...a number of years ago).

Preview of TW:12 (PS 3) at Operation Sports. Bottom line, The Motion works very well when swinging. Even shows you real life tendency for fade or draw. Putting a bit more of a hassle.

. With the high-def graphics and fantastic Move controls, I will unfortunately have to abandon the Wii, buy a Move controller, and start getting my rounds of virtual golf on the PS3 this year.

That's one hell of an endorsement.

Just got an e-mail from Amazon. Says they are giving a $10 gift card for pre-ordering. Hm...

Good news Jay'. Operation Sports Q&A answers: Yes.

Interesting article from ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/...

I've now played the demos for this on the PS3 and 360. The PS 3 'The Move' seem's pretty accurate (although there is only one hole to play). But for me, the PS 3 graphics look wonky. Like bright paint drawing. No feel for a real life course ambiance. Gads, I can't put it in word, but texture is just ugly. Up close is a bit better, but when teeing up, it's looks bad to me. So maybe something to do with them having to use The Move, or something wonky with blue-ray. I don't know. I only played the hole a 3 times or so (and really had tough time figuring out how to change clubs, or aim and to fade or draw. Let alone the use of 'focus'). My first time with TW on a PS3.

As for the 360, textures and such were as good as the last editions. Probably a bit better. Felt good and played fine. Probably because I've played TW forever on the 360 (and before that PC with various titles, first being 'Mean 18'), I'm more at ease with it. I ordered the PS 3 version because of, 'The Move', I hope I have not made a mistake, for as mentioned, it worked fine, but the textures for me where too garrulous.
