Did your pile become less of a mountain? - 2011 in review

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is complete. 810/1000 achievement points, 21 hours played and one great hell of a ride. I enjoyed everything about this game and I look forward to where the series goes next, especially after a very intriguing ending to this game. I may dabble a bit in the multiplayer, which is a lot of fun, but not enough fun to keep me from working on other games in my pile.

Dragon Age:Origins is in my sights now--played more last night and it is really starting to get its hooks in me.

I also ended up keeping off GameFly You Don't Know Jack as a game to play with my girlfriend and with my roommates. (Plus I was able to get it for $22.50 with my GameFly discount) I will add it to the pile. I also got Stacking, as I indicated before, I am enjoying it though I anticipate that I will complete it within a week.

EDIT: Whoa! Promotion! (that only took me 18 months to get to...)

I completed Trine and Scott Pilgrim last weekend. Enjoyed Scott Pilgrim a ton - it filled me with old school beat 'em up love - and really enjoyed Trine for the first half or so. It wore out its welcome out with me near the end. I should have my website updated with longer thoughts on the games (though, they won't be that much longer).

Also, I vowed I would not buy any games in 2011... but I kinda went back on that. I know, I know - but, it interestingly made me notice a few things about my purchasing habits.

#1 - I have a hard time resisting impulse purchases on downloadable games. I saw Stacking available on the XBL marketplace and plopped down $15 within seconds. I also spent a few bucks on a big sale on the PSN store a few weeks ago. Does this bother me so much? Not so much. I guess it's because they aren't huge, sprawling games or hefty $60 titles and I know I'm getting my money's worth for them on some level. I'm loving Stacking, by the by.

#2 - If it's a game I can enjoy with my girlfriend, I will buy it, no questions asked. Case in point: Tetris on the PSN store. We were going to watch a Blu-Ray when she let out a squeel of "OOH, TETRIS!" I didn't even hesitate with the purchase. Same thing with You Don't Know Jack. Do I regret it? Totally not. I really enjoy playing games with others, and don't tend to view "adding to the mountain" in such a negative light when I can share the experience with friends.

#3 - If there's a huge sale on iOS store, I won't be able to resist. But then again... I spent like $5 on 5 games. I'm okay with that.

I'm pretty happy that I've resisted purchasing all the major $60 titles this year so far. Yeah, GameFly!

While I didn't buy it, I still acquired Stacking through PSN (I have no regrets regarding PS+ purchase last year!!!). Should have Fallout 3 finished by Monday, and Stacking completed (though I doubt properly finished) by the end of next week. This is why MMO's are bad, they deter from wanting to do anything else while leaving the feeling of wanting to own a game you're sure that you'll play and then don't (that copy of ^Nier^, it's still unopened...). [Sorry, my inner rant I couldn't keep contained]

I'm giving up on Final Fantasy XIII. I was about 15 hours in already at the beginning of the month. I had mostly enjoyed it up until that point, even if I had been hoping it would open up and get a bit deeper. I've played about another 10 hours in the past 2 weeks and was bored out of my skull.

I'm in Chapter 9, and Chapter 10 is when it is supposed to open up a bit. However, I just read that it really only opens up for a little while, then it's back to running down long corridors and fighting monsters. I actually like the combat, but that's all there is to the game. There is zero variety. Even if it does open up for a bit, I realized that I don't want to play another 20 hours of the game; not when I have other, better games (RPGs among them) to play.

It's really a shame, because almost everything else about the game is great. The Crystarium upgrade system is neat. The massive Datalog (Story notes, bestiery, character dossiers, etc.) is fantastic. I love the character and world designs. The story is interesting (even if the character dialog is a bit goofy sometimes). It's like they decided that they had to get the incidentals right, but forgot to make the actual game fun. Like, I said, I like the battle system (I wouldn't mind seeing something like it in a deeper game), but considering there is nothing else to provide variety, it isn't good enough to carry a 50 hour long game.

I have a rule in general for games, where I will try it for a while, and if I don't like it, I stop playing. For most short games that timeframe is usually between 1 and 3 hours. Since RPGs are longer, I typically give them up to 10 hours to get going. The sad thing is that I actually followed that rule with FFXIII initially. I got it from GameFly, played about 5 hours, and decided to keep it, even though I knew that the game was a slow burn. It was just starting to get interesting, they showed you a bit more of the battle system, plus, it's a Final Fantasy game, so it can't be terrible right? Ugh.

So, yeah, I'm going to sell it, in the hopes that someone else will enjoy it, and find something from the pile that I don't hate playing. Not sure what that is yet.

My pile grew by three more games yesterday: Epic Mickey, Dante's Inferno, and BioShock 2. I haven't even opened my last pile acquisition, Resident Evil 5.

However, I've come to realize that my magic price point for console games is $15. Those four games I just mentioned were all bought for $15. When a game I'm interested in hits that price, I don't worry about how many other games I have on my pile and whether or not I'll be able to buy a game for less if I wait to buy it until I'll actually play it. If I buy a game for $15 and months later, when I still haven't played it, see it on sale for $5, I don't feel cheated or like I made a mistake. $15 is my price point with no regrets.

I bought Dead Space 2 when it was $40 on Amazon last week. Since I got the PS3 version, I went ahead and bought the PS3 version of Dead Space with it for continuity and because I'm stupid. So, I switch Dead Space from PC to PS3 on the spreadsheet and added Dead Space 2. I'm being a wuss and playing Dead Space on easy so I can get through it quickly and move on to 2. I think I'm going to do that for a lot of the games on my pile from now on.

Lost Odyssey was fantastic. Enjoy!

It's turning out to be that way. Absolutely gorgeous game.

I too have decided to join this support group. As a repeat Pile Offender I outline the crimes I have commited (The Pile), which crimes I intend to commit (Wanted List) and those peripheral crimes that may yet be committed given the right circumstances (Budget Buys).

I have broken my Pile into which months I intend to play each game. I decided that I would dedicate months to specific genres (or sub-genres) to help get me in the mood. July was assigned as my Horror month due to it being the middle of winter in Australia and I like the idea of playing these games during our coldest, windiest and darkest month.

2011 – The Pile
February – High Adventure
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (360)
Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom (360)
April – Futuristic Shooter
Deus Ex (PC)
Deus Ex: Invisible War (PC)
Portal (PC)
May – RPG
Resonance of Fate (360)
The Witcher (PC)
July – Horror
Dead Space (360)
BioShock 2 (360)
Alan Wake (360)
The Darkness (360)

My Wanted List consists of those games which I have no choice but to buy on day 1. Special note goes to Dragon Age II, Elder Scrolls V and Mass Effect 3 as these games will likely stretch the limits of my marriage due to my likelihood of shirking all responsibilities during their respective release months.
Also note that I have included an announced but unnamed Assassin’s Creed title.
It took great effort to keep this list as small as it is. Mainly, this was achieved by demoting games to the budget buys.

2011 – Wanted List
Dragon Age II (360)
Batman: Arkham City (360)
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (360)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360 / PC)
Mass Effect 3 (360)
Assassin’s Creed: ? (360)

My Budget Buys section is by no means accurate. I have separated games by the upper limits I am willing to pay for them. Games in this category are subject to having games traded in to reduce their price to the acceptable levels. Also, I may add games at any point ONLY to this list (some exclusions apply).

2011 – Budget Buys
$AU 60
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360)
L.A. Noire (360)
$AU 40
Dead Space 2 (360)
Heavy Rain (PS3)
$AU 30
Vanquish (360)
Castlevania: Lord of Shadows (360)
The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (PC)
Dawn of War II: Retribution (PC)
$AU 20
Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions (360)
Star Wars: The Force Unleased 2 (360)

My Side Mission section will basically be achievement whoring or replays. If the 360 version of Mass Effect 2 gets the Genesis comic, expect to see 2-3 replays here to set up for Mass Effect 3. DLC for various games will get included in this section. Expect to see Final Fantasy XIII – Treasure Hunter getting added here at some point.

2011 - Side Missions
Fallout: New Vegas (360) – 1000/1000 + DLC

I, Wuppie, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.
I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

I talked myself out of MvC3 and canceled my order this weekend, so that isn't on the pile.

It looks awesome, but I like the idea of fighting games, more than I like fighting games themselves. I used to love playing Street Fighter 2, or Mortal Kombat with friends. I absolutely adored Power Stone on the Dreamcast, although that played more like a 3D brawler. I probably could get into them again, but the learning curve is so high, and they usually don't have much in the way of tutorials beyond a training mode with a move list and an enemy that doesn't fight back. I did find out recently that MvC3 is supposed to have an actual tutorial mode that will teach you moves (and that SSFIV does also), so I that makes it more appealing. Still, in all likelihood, I would play it for a few days then not touch it. It's possible that this game would be different, and I would get super into it, but probably not. I still want to play it, so I put it on my Gamefly Queue. If it turns out amazing, I can always buy it then.

I'm writing off Eets. It's an utterly charming puzzle game that's undermined by its own physics engine. As with a lot of physics-based puzzle games, items often bounce or fall in strange and unexpected ways that prevent a puzzle from being solved. It's frustrating to know the solution to a puzzle but still need pixel-perfect placement of things like explosives so that things bounce just-so and not off the board entirely. Since I'm not having fun with it, I'm moving on.

Well I crossed off one of the 2011 purchases this weekend. Not sure if that's real progress, but at least I'm sticking to the list.

Killzone 3, since Amazon is doing a $20 credit, and heck I did have some holiday gift card money left, so I just went for it. Looking forward to Tuesday now.

I've got good news and bad news.

Good news: I managed to stop myself from buying Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY during the recent steam sale and I finished:

Art Style: Orbient (Wiiware) - A great and simple concept - use gravity and repulsion of various bodies as well as getting caught in orbit of larger masses to guide your globe to merge with equally sized bodies (to grow) and capture smaller ones in your own orbit. The execution is good and even serene at times. I especially liked that the music would change depending on the number of satellites orbiting your planetoid. The final stage was really frustrating, however, as it took me over 25 attempts and I frequently failed at the very end. Then some "extra levels" opened up. I took one look at the first one and quit out

Gargoyle's Quest II: The Demon Darkness (NES) - Billed as a combination side-scroller and RPG (lite), this NES follow-up to the Gameboy original is REALLY tough in spots. Seriously, the Doppelganger boss can go ...do something to himself. The concept is neat and the graphics, sound, and contol are respectable, but I just didn't feel agile enough to compete with some of the really fast bosses. I also wished for some more rpg elements such as EXP allowing me to grind and become more powerful in order to make things easier. All I got was the ability to earn more extra lives. While your character does become progressively more powerful, it doesn't matter much as the game becomes harder at at least the same rate. It's pretty good, although the frustration factor will detract from the fun at times.

I'm also getting quite close on Divine Divinity and Mega Man 9, but need to concentrate on Metro 2033 and P.N.03 for the monthly pile thread.

The bad news is that I was weak. I bought both Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and LittleBigPlanet GOTY even though I don't own a PS3, although I will eventually, I want to play both of these, and they were $15.99 each with free shipping. Also, even though I beat two under-five-hour games, I replaced them with three "over 40 hours" titles:
Infinite Space (DS) - I watched a trailer which rung all the right bells, went to Amazon, and found that this game which isn't even a year old is unavailable except from third parties at INSANE ($50-$90) prices. Same on ebay. Then I checked amazon.de and saw it for 9,40 EUR plus 6 EUR shipping to me. SOLD!
Dragon Quest IX (DS) - While on amazon, I looked at Dragon Quest V. Same story as Infinite Space - no longer available unless you want to sell a your first-born for it. So I panicked and got DQ IX before it suffered the same fate.
Chrono Trigger (DS) - I needed another item to get free shipping and so added this one at $14.92.

What's the protocol here? Do I add these five to the spreadsheet under a special "Shame" heading?

No, we'll just add them to your normal list, the 'shame' part isn't too much of the focus here, more the support to not purchase, or help keep momentum going on the pile given all the new shiny that abounds.

The fact that you've fessed up in the forum is all the public shaming you need to worry about

Sorry for the lack of updates from myself too. Few things going on in the home life. Will be back with a vengence tonight, all things going well.

EDIT:
With that in mind, anyone want to help me get my momentum back with DA:O? I haven't even got the Urn of Sacred ashes (did the Arl mission first), and I'm finding it difficult to keep on track. I miss the regular stream of 'ploks' as a regular score whore achievement hunter. Maybe I just messed up picking a BIG pile title to start with, and I should have gone for a few 'quick victories' to keep up momentum.

Ugh. I have done zero work on this.

Glad I'm not the only one having issues. Gears Of War 2 is not going well; it's just not holding my interest at all. Maybe I'll put back on the pile and move onto something that's actually enjoyable.

Just keep going - it is a great game, and at the end you get plock overload:)

It is a great game. What have you done thus far?

I'll pop it in a spoiler tag, but here's the run of it.

Spoiler:

I did all 6 intro stories, just to get a feel for them all and see which one I liked the most (and, if I'm being honest, net the cheevos too).
Settled on Dwarf Rogue, and did the DLCs, Warden's Keep, return to Ostagar (for Duncan's blades), recruited Shale, and completed Leliana's Song (for the good armour).
I listened to Alistair, and went to Redcliffe after finishing up in Lothering.
I then made a 'difficult choice', and now have to go and get the Urn of Ashes.
I have only added Leliana, Sten, Shale and Deefer the War Dog to my party so far.

I think the main problem is I've allowed myself to be distracted, and I need to focus on seeing 'a single story' with the credits rolling, and not worry so much about getting as many parts of the story done on the first play through...

Time to refocus, and not worry about the plocks?

Any help in terms of direction, scenarios to tackle next, etc, would also be appreciated.

Spoiler:

Remind me what "a difficult choice" is - the bloodmage thing?

Have you done anything in Denerim, the Mages Tower or Orzammar? You'll get to the urn eventually, but it's not time-critical. My advice would be to head to the mage tower next (you get a solid healer there and some nice stat boosts), followed by a stop-over in Denerim (you can investigate Brother Genitivi there, too, but that's not your focus) and then down to the Dalish Elves. After that, clean up in Orzammar and head through the deep roads. When all that's done. you'll have a solid party, and then should head up to Haven and follow the path to the Urn. You should even be able to fell a dragon at that point.

You should even be able to fell a dragon at that point.

Spoiler:

Deciding to kill the Arl's son, or allow his mother to sacrifice herself.

It was a surprisingly conflicted choice for me. Mother sacrifices herself, but the child lives with the guilt of being the reason she died. I chose to kill the child, so that the mother would have to live with the consequences of her actions, and explain it to the Arl herself (keeping it a secret, training him to hide his gift, etc.) Release the child, and punish the parent, seemed like the right thing to do.

I haven't been anywhere other than Lothering and Redcliffe. Will head to the mages tower next, thanks for the advice. I should get me some traction on this title now

I updated my spoiler text - re-read it when you can. Minor changes only, but enough that warranted it updated.

Oh, and enjoy!

The mages tower is where I petered out when I tried to play on the xbox. Overall, I enjoyed what I played of the game which is why I picked it up on Steam and intend try it again but playing that tower was frustrating.

I didn't even get that far, but that's primarily because the controls on the 360 felt to limiting, and was missing features that I'm pretty sure exist on the PC version (like pulling the camera back). I quit and decided to play it on PC when I get a rig that can handle it.

-----

For pile progress, I knocked two more off the list: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and LittleBigPlanet.

I like Castlevania a lot, though it definitely has its issues, most of which were related to the fixed camera, and control mapping. There were a few annoying spots, but nothing that made me want to stop playing. The combat was excellent (and hard, but mostly not cheap), and the traversal was decent enough. I actually enjoyed the story, as well, and am curious how they will handle a sequel. A lot of people complained that it is hack'n'slash, rather than the Metroidvania style that the series has used for the last ~15 years. I enjoy that style of game, and there aren't very many of them, so I was a little disappointed when it was initially announced. However, if you can get past that, and enjoy it for what it is, rather than get hung up on what it isn't, the game itself is really good.

LittleBigPlanet, on the other hand, I wasn't impressed with. The art style is great, the music is great; the game, not so much. The loose platforming is bad enough, and the three layers are confusing at best, but the implementation of the lives system made me want to punch things on numerous occasions. Having to replay the last 10 minutes because you failed the checkpoint 3 (usually, sometimes more) times in a row is not fun. Lives are an outmoded game mechanic, which I don't think should be used in general anyway, but if you insist on putting them in, then you better make sure I don't die repeatedly due to your sloppy controls. Ugh. This was one of the games I was most excited about when I got my PS3 a couple months ago, so it's more disappointing than it might be otherwise. I don't think I'm going to bother with the sequel.

Totally agree about the lives/checkpoint nonsense. If the loose controls caused me to repeat 30 second bits I wouldn't care so much, but having to redo the whole level got old quick. Several others in the catch-all feel the same. Also notice that even though I haven't beaten LBP, it's not on my big list. Can't muster up the desire to finish it when I know how frustrating it is.

I was getting depressed (a slight exaggeration) about my pile o' shame, having stalled half way through FFXIII (I'll get back to it. It's part of the natural process for me to have a long hiatus mid way through an RPG) and Assassin's Creed 2 (feels like too much busy work and not enough combat at the moment.) None of the other games on the pile were filling me with any enthusiasm so I put in Bioshock 2 expecting to grind through it, just so I could tick the game off my list.

I was firmly in the 'Bioshock was a complete and satisfying experience and I don't want a sequel!' camp but Bioshock 2 has won me over completely. Now I'm turned around on my pile and I'm enjoying deciding what I should play next. Yay!

It must be a February thing. I stalled on DA:O, but TrueHeart, iantgotnopants, and Sally all put me on the right path. I've also fired up a few 'non-declared' 12 month pile titles for the Viral Month on TrueAchievements, and they've got my momentum back into gear.

Get ready pile, March is going to hand it to you...

Yah, I feel really good about my pile progress so far as well. I knocked out all 72 achievements on fallout 3, am almost done with Transformers WFC and have enabled M0nkey into having my interdimensional cross gender child in Fable 3, so I can start that up next. Just in time for March, when my commitment will truly be tested - DA2, Deus Ex, and more!!

Dead Space 2 is off my list, and technically so is MvC3 (though I never added it. I mean, it's a fighting game after all).

I want to beat Fable 3 before Dragon Age 2 is out, but I'm having trouble motivating myself to play it.

Me too, but am forcing myself to start it this weekend.

I surfaced to comment that Dragon Age: Origins has consumed me and that I could not be happier. I've put in another 30 hours and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Such a great story, the large nature of the game coupled with the large number of quests and the thing that BioWare does the best, flesh out your companions and give them full stories and personalities, it has left me a very happy gamer.

Spoiler:

I got stuck 2/3 of the way through the quest to get the Sacred Urn, I did not have enough poultices to complete the quest, so I re-loaded a slightly older save and am now working with the Dalish to rid them of their werewolf problem. I'm finding lots of elfroot and building up my poultice stockpile to make a run at the Urn after I am done with the elves. Also the Great Oak's wordplay was very amusing!

I know there is zero chance that I will finish before Dragon Age 2 comes out and even though, in a moment of weakness, I pre-ordered the Signature Edition when it came back up on NewEgg briefly, I could not be happier with my decision. It will sit on my pile for a little while until I finish DA:O (and hopefully DA2 will run on my laptop)

This game has put me even further into BioWare's camp (I loved the first two Mass Effect games) and I accept my fanboy card wholeheartedly.

I've played a little bit of Stacking (38% complete) and I have Bulletstorm coming from GameFly, which I will be enjoying when I need a DA:O break.

Though I know I will miss my target for February, I feel that without the 12 month plan that I would not have gone back to Dragon Age as soon as I did and I thank all of you for it. I am also enjoying reading everyone's progress and it is fun to see others who are getting back into DA:O as well.
