Gratuitous Space Battles Catch-all

I think that the campaign could be absolutely amazing if they did it right. Imagine if they had a similar matchmaking system to Starcraft II at work behind the campaign, instead of a static experience.

Looks like they're selling their new expansion pack for $6. Or $3. You decide.

Anyone know if the version from their website is compatible with the Steam version? Looks like the new expansion isn't up on Steam yet.

All of the other expansions have worked by entering the key.

I just bought the expansion directly from Positech and installed into the Steamapps folder. Seems to work, at least it displays the new race (Nomads) in the menus. I haven't tried actually using them yet.

I'm really looking forward to the campaign update. That kind of context is all I'm really missing from the game - I think. It could also be that the current puzzle nature of the battles is what in fact keeps me coming back.

I put many hours into the game, it was worth more than I paid (I got the game and all the DLC for a low price). That said, "new races" don't add much to the game. I've already got 1 or 2 races that I never or hardly ever played.

They matter more when you do challenges. That keeps the game more fresh.

I guess. I never had the urge to play challenges.

RPS interview with Cliffski about the campaigns.

Preorders (and access to the beta) are up. And the expansion costs (drum roll please) $6.99. I'm fine with that price.

Btw, it's worth noting you don't need any of the other expansion packs to play this expansion, it'll use whatever variation of the game you have.

ooh, that's awesome!

Makes it an easy sell to me. Should be able to fit it into the December or January budget at that price, too.

How about that Mac version on Steam? Any word?

I'm still waiting for the Nomad expansion to show up on steam. It looks fun!

Apparently that's on Steam right now and Cliffski has no ETA.

Bought and installed today. I can't figure out how to start the campaign. Probably I'm just can't installing it incorrectly with the GSB Steam version. Any luck anyone? I tried both the "Steamapps" folder and another one under "Program files".

And yes, Steam updated it to the required 1.48 tonight. I (re-) installed it after that.

Nevermind, reinstalling the expansion did the trick. Just fought my first battle against a small fleet and won. I'm sure I'll lose many hours to this game. I'm just hoping that the player made fleets won't be entirely too clever.

I didn't realize that the video on the preorder page was actually a new video. Not the most exciting video ever made, but it gives you an okay overview of what to expect. Thought I'd post it.

Having played some more, I don't think I like fighting against human player generated fleets in the campaign mode. I'll have to see what dropping the difficulty does, but it seems like those hardcore enough to be on the beta are way more involved than myself. Cliffski has been tweeting about perhaps having to lower the difficulty of the campaign, based on how people in the beta are doing, so this may yet change.

Will this come to Steam? When?

Presumably when it's out of beta.

It's up, and on SteamPlay -- I bought the PC version a while ago and now have the option to download the Mac version. (But get a "servers too busy" error when I try.)

The campaign is really hard to get into for me. I did manage to clear the first world on "easy" after half a dozen rebooted campaigns, but even then the next fleet feels all but impossible. The unstoppable battle cruiser even had the nerve to follow my limping fleet back to my world and proceeded to wipe me out. Recovering from a beating seems really tough, at least in the beginning when you only have 1-2 worlds.

I guess it might get better once there are some more players in. At least there are now my inept fleets around to make some other poor admiral's life easier.

So I realized I bought "The Swarm" DLC from Gamersgate, while the base game is from Steam. Any way to tell Steam I have this DLC? I know how to do that with a game, but how about DLC?

You can get the DLC to work without telling Steam just by installing the expansions into the GSB /steamapps folder. But I guess you would like Steam to know you've already got the DLC?

Yes, so I don't end up rebuying it in a forgetful moment.

Gratuitous Space Battles: Galactic Conquest campaign is now up on Steam!

Yeah I had a good laugh when that showed up today in my RSS reader and I went to buy it only to find out I'd bought it earlier. Yay for poor impulse control..?

The only way to make sure you don't buy games impulsively is to buy all of them.

This concept is magic.

Wait what? I don't remember pre-ordering this. Does it only update once you launch the game?

Hmm. Not sure exactly how Steam handles this game. If you purchased the Galactic Conquest expansion through any other means than Steam proper you can enter the CD Key you were given (since Steam now recognizes it). Before, Steam wasn't prepared for this expansion.

I don't think it blindly updates and waits for a cd key in the way consoles tends to. At least that's how I think Steam treats GSB.

I think its just a bug with the store page. I definitely don't own it. I'll pick it up later when I have time and my pile isn't so big.
