[George Takei]Oh MY.[/George Takei]

I find myself wishing that there were some sort of film-grain or desaturation effect on the footage. It looks way too "clean" and a bit cartoonish as-is.

Also, I really hope they remember to animate the creepy mannequins standing on the street at 2:15.

I'm much more interested in the game after watching that. It looks like it could be really fun. Here's hoping against hope that they tone down the gunplay in favor of interrogations and investigation.

Wow. That's a definite buy for me after watching that video.

I'm sold.

I do agree though that I would like a look that's slightly less "colorized classics" and more gritty. Aw hell, I just like Noire in black and white but that's asking too much. After all, you can't follow the girl in the red dress if you can't tell which one is red and which one is blue.

A 40's black and white movie filter would be an awesome toggle though. Not just straight-up black and white, but a softer tone as seen in the movies from back then.

Looks delicious, the tech is amazing. If it's even close to RDR in terms of greatness, I'll be pleased. GTA what?

What struck me after watching that is that with a bit of editing I'm pretty sure you could put that up as a video review of a game and convince most people it's genuine.

Rockstar's recent marketing efforts have been excellent. The series of videos they released for Red Dead Redemption were very persuasive in getting me interested in a game I'd hitherto written off (more so than a series of flash-cut gore vignettes with an angry rock track would have, for example). They demonstrated the ambience, gameplay, graphics, music and sound of their games in an unpatronising and mature way. To a large extent, Rockstar let the games speak for themselves, which in turn speaks of confidence in the product, which is incredibly persuasive in itself.

You don't want to know if your mom will hate it or not?

Holy crap, I'm sold. Even if there's too much gunplay, even if the investigations don't actually require much critical thinking, even if questioning and interrogations are too gamey, this looks like too much of a step forward to ignore. It's a first step, and it could falter, but I can't miss out on this. Besides, it's a like a whole game of emotive Alyx Vances or cutscene Ezios.

I expect LA Noire will be one of the very few games I buy for full price this year.

That would be pretty kick-ass though... a smoky bar all depicted in black and white, except for the dame in the red dress. Very "Sin City".

I am going to use money that I have to buy this game.

I was hoping they would follow RDR's promotional lead with these videos and I'm glad to see they have. I really like this format -- they're long enough to show you actual gameplay footage as well as hint a little at the story. They also do a great job highlighting the unique points of the game in a leisurely, documentary style. In other words, gimme gimme!

I watched that pretty-amazing video and came away skeptical that my little old 360 can do such things. I also noticed the button prompts were from the PS3 controller, and this game was supposed to be PS3 exclusive for a long time.

Any word on how this'll perform on 360? I'm very tempted to preorder for Amazon's $10 credit.

Not sure which console is lead for L.A. Noire development, but if it's any consolation Red Dead actually looked/performed better on 360.

I'm going to murder a guy and use his money. I'll leave clues on the body that can be discovered and looked at by pressing A on your controller.

True dat.

This went from a Must Buy to Must Buy And Spend Every Waking Hour Playing Until Sated.

Dunno.. looks cool, but everytime Rockstar releases a game, i think [i]I'm going to like it.. and it just ends up being more open world gameplay, with lackluster shooting mechanics that [i]I end up hating.

Yeah, but that's kind of what they do. It's hard to imagine expecting anything different, unless the game is a complete departure like that Table Tennis game they made.

For shooting mechanics, I think they've made admirable strides as of late. GTA IV as a pretty large improvement over San Andreas/Vice City, and Red Dead even managed to top IV by a pretty large margin.

Now I know that's not saying much as Rockstar are no where close to being the best in the biz for 3rd person shooting, but at least they're moving in the right direction with it.

I can appreciate that, and I bought RDR because I heard it solved some of those problems.. it was barely better. I just don't understand how a studio with so many resources, can't get the feel of a shooting mechanic right. Uncharted shooting mechanic would be PERFECT in those games.

i do like the look of the detective stuff though.

Yeah, that's a good question. If a developer like BioWare can go from 2D PC WRPG up to quite serviceable third-person shooter/WRPG-hybrid games, it's fair to wonder why Rockstar can't polish off that bugaboo also (given their deep pockets).

Don't confuse the publisher with the developer. The actual studio making L.A. Noire is Team Bondi, and this is their first game (though the founder came from SCEE Team Soho).

I'm betting it's because their games have sold well regardless. If the squeaky wheel gets the oil, their shooting mechanics haven't been squeaking loud enough.

EDIT: And Gravey makes an excellent point. Since they aren't using Rockstar's GTA engine (or engineers, at least), we can't be positive the shooting mechanic will be the same as GTA and its ilk.

Right, LAN is using the Euphoria character animation, but otherwise it's a proprietary engine. It's stylistically similar to GTA, but look at a variety of palpably different games that have used that style: GTAIV, Bully, Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II, L.A. Noire—all developed by different studios, and most with different engines (Rage, Renderware, Gamebryo, Illusion, other proprietary).
