On the subject of watching recorded matches - it's great that Valve added backwards compatibility to the game replay engine, but some of the resulting graphical glitches are a little creepy. I was watching the HOT / BOB Doublecross match, and this guy appeared on the bridge intermittently

It's not a player, and didn't move around or anything.

There's an SMG in the game?

I had a pubbie shooting at me with an SMG awhile back. I wanted to switch to his team and talk to him about his mistake.

As someone who was out of the loop for a long while, and never played sniper much to begin with, can someone explain to me what's wrong with the smg?

I use the SMG because:

I don't like Jarate with the rifle, because I'm too far back to use it too well and if someone gets close enough for me to use it, I'm running away at that point, not fighting.

I don't like the Razorback because it's telling the spies that they've already won the battle; it gets annoying with the Eternal Reward, but if you listen for footsteps and decloak and stay with your teammates, you'll be fine.

I don't like the Darwin's danger shield because good snipers will headshot you anyway. The full set seems worthless to me, but I don't have the hat so I've never tried to use it.

At close range, the SMG does ~8 dmg/shot at close range which means it can easily deal 50-100 dmg in roughly a second. If a scout or pyro closes on me, I usually shoot my rifle once, scoped if I'm lucky, unscoped if I'm not and spray with the SMG as I'm running. I've gotten out of a lot of nasty situations for that reason. Plus, getting killed by the SMG hurts peoples' pride. It's like a classic fish kill.

But if you have a SMG, you don't get to equip yourself with a jar of piss, A JAR OF PISS!

I carry a jar of urine, therefore your arguments are not valid.

The SMG is only good vs pyros and scouts who you somehow spot before they get on you. Most will know to not walk in front of a sniper's incredibly narrow vision and won't fire until they are point blank. In those cases, the sniper never stood a chance anyway.

Jarate can break a cart push, put out fires, such as from oh-so-annoying flares, reveal spies and generally screw them up, and gives the sniper a decent chance in 1 on 1 combat against any class, which will often turn into melee fights for the sniper, since most people try to sneak up on him. Being able to kill anybody in one or two machete hits is nothing to sneeze at.

2. For some reason I'm having a problem that when I hit the key for voice chat in game, everything freezes for a couple seconds.

This happens to me on the rare occasion when I play on my mbp whether I use my USB headset/mic or I use the built-in. The freeze usually happens the first time I click PTT, but then subsequent attempts at voice comm do not result in a freeze for the next few seconds. I usually just tap PTT right when I spawn and then every few seconds when I'm not in active combat to "clear out" the freeze. I know it's not ideal, but it's an alternative if you're not booting to Windows to play.
As we've seen Malor attest to many times ( ), the game will run much better on your iMac if you boot to windows to play. I highly recommend this course of action when you know you're in for extended play sessions (e.g. tourney games or Mon/Fri night games).

Snipering used to be a gentleman's sport; now it's all about the piss.

I will maintain tradition and only use the original three weapons.

Heathens.

Pee sniper and SMG work together really well.

Is pee sniper in any way related to Gunsniper?

Not sure if anyone has told you yet but, unless all-talk is on, you can only talk to other dead people while waiting to respawn.

My Sniper evolution has gone full circle.
I started with SMG (before crazy weapon drops). I switched to Jarate but found it was only good for fires. Almost everyone who used to panic when getting pissd on have learned to adapt. It seems to have lost it's relative effectiveness (IMHO). As spies got bold again I saw backstabs as a bigger problem so I went Razorback. Well spies have figured out, screw it, let's just shoot you in the head instead of stabbing you if you wear that. So now I am back to SMG as it fills that void where someone is too close to snipe but too far to chop.

It proved effective last night on several spies.

This explains a lot. I've been really working on communicating lately. Problem is nobody can hear me because I'm always dead.

As for the freezing issue, I guess for the time being I'll try Phishposer's technique of periodically hitting the talk key to clear things out. As much as I'd like to run the game through bootcamp, I don't think I can justify the cost of buying a copy of Windows to my wife just so I can play TF2.

And Brainz, maybe it wasn't you that jumped out the window, I can't recall for sure. I was jumping around a lot trying to keep everybody healed. It was one of the goodjers playing a heavy, though. Also, I didn't mean to sound like I felt like you were yelling at me, I just felt bad that you were out there in the middle of everything with no uber to protect you. In the end I got out and popped it anyways, so no real harm done.

Regardless of the name, the description should be "on the plus side, the fire is out now" :P

I'm liking the sound of these, the description in particular. I suppose I'll have to trade someone for the description tag.

If recent history is a guide, you should name it:

"I'm going to violate you, Grubber."

Only because you violate people's faces. With bullets.

As far as the SMG goes, I can see it's potential usefulness. I just like having jarate on hand to help take down a bunch of people grouped together.

That description is perfect for the axtinguisher.

Yeah, I just find jarate to be way to useful. Marking spies, extinguishing teammates and most of all, using it to help clear areas. If there are a lot of enemies grouped up I like to throw the jarate before I start trying to pick them off. This can help your team clear an area faster.

I like the SMG, and it does to a lot of damage, but I like being more that the guy that sits behind everyone shooting heads. At least with jarate I can do a few other things to help out.

I believe all snipers should use the jarate. It helps mark spies and makes snipers more useful to the team. The mini-crits from jarate can really help win group battles. If it makes the sniper a little weaker in one-to-one combat that's fine. The team is better off with the jarate.

The Jarate is meant to go with the Huntsman, if you're a rifle sniper and are close enough to land a jarate shot, you're doing it wrong...

Or an awesome GUNSNIPER. But really, in a lot of areas where I snipe the only people I can't jarate are opposing snipers. Otherwise it is easy to quick run up behind a heavy/medic pair, throw some pee, and head back to a sniping distance.

I still laugh every time I throw a jar of pee on someone. You would think it would get old, but it doesn't.

Agreed, I still get a kick out of throwing a jar of piss at someone. When he is covered, he is humiliated and critted on.
