25 Year Old Dire Straits Song Censored On Canadian Radio

I checked out iTunes, and only the sanitized version is offered there - the second verse was completely removed.

I foresee many a downloaded Torrent of this song as the "offensive" version gets pulled off the airwaves and from online music stores.

lol I have it on cd, so I can keep my "you may need a brain to interpret it" version of the song. Unreal...

I wish I did - I've had no luck getting a copy of the original so far. But I will prevail! Watch out easily offended person who screwed it for the rest of us after 25 years of no complaints - I will find a copy and listen to it A LOT.

This song just came on the radio at work, and was the uncensored version.

If it's a Canadian radio station, they'll end up eating a fine for that. It was only Canadian stations the song was censored on though.

It's quite amazing how bitter many stations still are about this. I still hear it mentioned with disdain almost every day, including on Live 88.5 and DAWG FM, two stations that don't even have the song in their playlists. Many times I've heard them encourage listeners to contact the CBSC and complain. I'm surprised they haven't at least issues a statement backing up their decision since it seems there is a real (deserved in my opinion) backlash against this.

"Hey, if the CBSC can go and pull a song that's 25 years old because of one lyric that apparently offends only one person in all of Canada, what happens if someone starts calling and complaining about some of the lyrics in the songs that we actually like to play here on our station? We'd better do something to stop this right now before all of a sudden we can't play anything that we want to anymore, eh?"

That would be my guess on what they're thinking, anyway.

You're probably right - and there are loads of songs out there that could be deemed offensive.

I'm female, maybe I should go on a one woman rampage and get all songs that imply or directly say that women are: b*tches, sluts, hos, gold diggers, whiny harpies, sex objects, weak, stupid, or head cases, pulled off the air - except for the ones actually sung by women, because then it's just empowering. After all, as a woman, I think it's my right to ensure that my gender is seen only in a positive light.

[insert eyeball rolling here]

Or, you know, I could just not listen to the songs that offend me (and I can't think of any songs that offend me enough to even do that).

I think you should take up that crusade, if for no other reason than it would give our local braindead-talentless-lowest-rung-autotune-ridden-hive-of-musical-scum-and-villainy pop station HOT 89.9 nothing to play anymore.

I remember that station! I lived in Ottawa for ten years and when that radio station started up, everyone played it at work and everywhere else too. Issuing insurance policies to the crap music on that station day in and day out...I'm surprised I didn't lose my mind.

Maybe I should complain and see if I can sink HOT 89.9!

I find Sexy Female Doggo insulting. Not to the women but to my ear drums. Same with Like a G6. My father was 80% G6 and that song is an insult to my noble culture.

Your father was 80% twin-engine business jet aircraft? Does that mean that you're actually a Transformer?

I can neither confirm nor deny my status as a transformer. Autobots, it's time to roll out!

Ahem, sorry something in my throat.

Come to New York and listen to Hot 97 for a few hours.

Is that what that song is about? I always wondered why he'd be singing about a sh*tty pontiac.

I always heard 'cheese steaks' until I actually saw what the song was called. I prefer my version.

If you happen to meet Michael Bay, pinch him in the butt with rusty claws. It's called a "Tough Guy's Hello".

Hmm, I don't recall typing that...

*I* am the Transformer. It's right there in my tag.

OT: I am listening to old Dire Straits albums right now. Damn, what fine masterpieces. Telegraph Road and Industrial Disease fit the current times so well, too.

For the record, Sirius satellite uses the uncensored version.
