Various DICE and EA twitter accounts are saying tomorrow's when a whole load of information gets released about BF3, and there's a GI cover story on it http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...

Personally I'm apprehensive about it, the return of a PC title, that they've been saying the PC side has had good attention, yet is going multiplatform.

I can't wait. I've had more fun with BC2 than I can remember with a multiplayer game since Q3. Warts and all.

I have very, very, very fond memories of BF2 on the PC. It's one of the few shooters where the developer nailed every aspect of the game and one that I could play for days at a time. It was truly epic on so many levels and I really miss playing. I'm curious to see what they do with BF3 (please don't make it futuristic).

Big maps ftw.

Same. I went and looked at my stats the other day. Over 100 hours played. Yikes. Great game.

Battlefield 3 is the true successor to Battlefield 2. Beyond our signature multiplayer, we have also included a full single-player campaign and a co-op campaign – all straight out of the box. As for fan favorite features, how does the return of jets, prone, and 64-player multiplayer (on PC) sound? All this built with our powerful new game engine Frostbite 2, which you'll hear and see a lot of in the months leading up to launch. For the full reveal on Battlefield 3, stay tuned for links to our cover stories hitting the gaming press throughout February, starting with Game Informer right now.

edit: Just fired up BF2, 862 servers still up and a fair proportion of them still with a healthy population, on a game approaching 6 years old.

Fall 2011

Think they're trying to emphasize the PC lead SKU with this one?

(EDIT: Cant' use the IMG tag on png files? In the box cover image, they have the PC box bigger and centered vs the 360/PS3 boxes)

I guess I'm just sceptical in general, but especially when it comes to publicity before the release of a game. The whole aim is to get you hyped up, and they want to get back the playerbase of the older PC games, instead of calling it Bad Company 3.

PNG isn't really great for forums, as it's lossless it's going to have larger file sizes than jpg which will have most of the image quality you need.

Sounds good but I'll believe it when I see it

I know, I was just being lazy and using the image tag on what's on the BF blog.

Hotlinking is bad too. :p

It's getting interesting.

Having gotten into the Battlefield universe with BF:BC2 — what's the general difference between a Battlefield and a Bad Company title? Is Battlefield not squad-based?

In this case, I don't care It's an EA publicity site. It's not like they don't want people to see it and are concerned about their bandwidth. And I don't think the image is going away.

Interested in the "drag your fallen comrades" thing. Sounds like something to combat Rambo revives that puts the reviver in more danger so they can't point farm you quite so much. The idea's interesting.

That next part sounds like it may have deployable guns like turrets or TOW launchers.

24 player multiplayer on console. I really hope the 24/64 difference is designed in, not just that they let server operators up the population.

I'd say the main differences between BF and BC is that BF is much more weighted towards vehicle combat, conquest is the main BF mode, the maps are much larger (compensated for by having more vehicles), and 'wider' than linear (see this BF2 map)

I'd say the main 2 differences are the scale of the maps, which is larger in previous battlefield games than in BFBC2, and a bigger emphasis on vehicles. Previous games feel a little more "arcade", a little less realistic than BFBC2, there's more craziness going on. It's a little hard to describe, therefore I'll give you an example : in BF1942 for instance, you could drive a jeep full speed into a tank kamikaze-style, bail out at the last second, and watch the impact destroy the tank in a satisfying explosion. In Battlefield: Vietnam you could tow vehicles (and whoever is in it) with the chinook chopper and drop them right into the action.

However, the most popular maps in BF2 tend to be the urban infantry focused ones. At the end of the day it makes the game feel a lot more like BFBC2. Mostly infantry with a couple of tanks and other vehicles thrown in. I'm sure the choices made for BFBC2's design reflect this popularity (and probably will for BF3 as well).

As others have pointed out, the scale of the maps can be a bit bigger. Transportation choppers, vehicles and the people driving them have a much bigger impact. Also, they were conquest focused with many more capture points. The rush mode is new.

Going to have to get a new joystick for this one.

Oh you think i snipe now? Just wait till this releases.

Press play then continue to read this thread. It makes your thread reading experience better, trust me.

dundundun du-dun dun!

According to Shacknews, consoles limited to 24 player games.

That's a big difference from the 64 on PC. Wonder how they'll scale the maps?

Just brings back flashbacks of guarding the western flag on El Al.

*sniffle.

World of tanks has been scratching that itch for me a bit though.

The fact that they're bringing back prone alone makes me feel less pessimistic about how 'PC' it will be instead of a 'good port.'

And for those wondering, I think they'd be absolutely crazy to assume they'll get away with just upping the server limitations for 64-man servers on the PC.

I thought I remembered that Bad Company 2 was actually their highest performing version, at least initially.

I am sort of sad about this, though. Their own web page says 64 players is PC only -

I really wonder what happens on 360 or PS3 then - do the maps "shrink" like they did in BF2? Or are they just 12 v 12 ghost towns?

Warning signs: Singleplayer and co-op campaign. This is Battlefield, not Bad Company. I would much rather DICE spent all their time on multiplayer instead of some lame 5-6 hour campaign filled with oscar mikes and ooh rahs. I mean, this is Battlefield! Use Bad Company as your outlet to experiment with singleplayer.

Good signs: The emphasis on the PC version being the lead. At the same time I'll believe it when I see it. I have a bad feeling the PC version will be noobified because of the console versions somehow.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this but right now it seems like they are trying to fuse Bad Company and Battlefield into one franchise. While that might not be a bad thing I thought the point of Bad Company was to bring a simplified Battlefield experience to consoles and Battlefield would continue to push the limits of online multiplayer.

Yes, talk is cheap. I expect it will be a good PC shooter, but I'll judge whether it's really good based on the finished product than hype. That said, they're doing better than the COD developers in recent years, after the last two of their games giving the PC a worse and worse game experience.

The never took it away. Bad Company is a spinoff that was designed around the consoles for faster paced action.

As long as it has the same pacing as ArmA 2, I'll be happy.

I'm happy to play both, honestly. Bad Company 2 is one of my favorite games ever. Definitely way up there in terms of MP games. But I'd gladly give Battlefield 3 a try. Maybe even grab a competent cheap PC for it as I'd love to check out that scene.

Yeah, me too! Between the BF computer series and Bad Company I have had some of my most fun FPS experiences. They compliment each other nicely.

I've been a Battlefield player since Desert Combat got me hooked. Vietnam, BF2 (had to skip 2142 'cause my computer sucked), BC1, BC2, BC2: Vietnam, etc.

Honestly, I don't noticed a huge difference in actual playstyle between the PC crowd and the console crowd. We talk about "sniper fests" in Bad Company - don't even try to tell me you never got spawn camped on BF2. I remember a map where the last uncapturable spawn point was in a trailer and they just parked a couple tanks outside the trailer. I also felt like it was pretty fast-paced - I remember a lot of jets flying over me, riding into battle in an M1A1 tank while Blackhawks thundered overhead, etc. For all the complaining I do about people being jerks on Xbox Live, if you've never seen a line of PC players teamkilling each other for the jet/chopper, I don't know which version of BF2 you played.

For me, honestly, the only thing I really miss is the gigantic maps and tons of players. If I could have that experience on my console I'd be super happy. I really don't have the means to assemble a PC that can handle a modern 64 player FPS.
