Yep, downloading now (along with Crysis 2).

Score! That's my evening sorted then.

I knew I forgot to do something. I was going to get some cat food, stop at home to let the dog out, and get this downloaded. I got some cat food and stopped at home to let the dog out. Dope.

Is there going to be an option that has the censor beeps? Sometimes when listening to stuff those beeps amuse me, although that would get old, too..

From the trailer, it looks like Gears of War, combined with the insane "blow sh#t up" of Unreal. What's not to love?

The demo shows an option to turn off "mature" language but it is greyed out. I am not sure what the effect would be.

The dude calls you "penisbreasts" instead of "dick-tits."

Lame.

I played through the demo.

Hmm.

I sort of had fun. My character remained largely mute throughout, but I was able to boot, leash and machine-gun my way through the linear level in a way that was semi-diverting. However, the 'bullet time' initiated by lifting any enemy off the ground in any fashion (boot, leash, explosion) got repetitive very quickly. It's a pretty game world in a colour-saturated, over the top sort of way. It reminded me of what I've seen of Enslaved actually.

But yeah, my interest in this has actually dropped from playing the demo, which I'm fairly sure is the opposite of their intention.

Same here.

My interested dropped, too. It's probably my fault for not "getting" the combo system, but I played through three or four times and my score was pathetically low each time. There's certainly some fun to be had and I have to admit that the dialog is so incredibly stupid that it's kinda entertaining. Really love the graphics. Just felt like the game wasn't quite as fun to replay as I expected, although maybe that will change in the final game when you have a full arsenal of weapons?

It's a rental for sure but I'm not sold on it as a purchase yet.

I hit about 6800 points in a half hour or so of play - it does take some thought to try things you have not tried before. Whether or not that is appealing is a personal thing. Some of the people on the leaderboard hit 18k or more, no idea how they got those scores, but I am not a very good game player overall. The trouble is a lot of those things I found are not all that different from each other in terms of what I actually do to make them happen. Kick guy into spike? Check. Kick guy into electrical cable? Check. Kick guy off ledge? Check. Kick guy into explosion radius? Check.

I'm going to keep playing the demo to see what else might be doable - if there are a lot of scoring opportunities that are not totally obvious the game might redeem itself.
I do think the demo could have given me a better impression if they had given us a couple more major setpieces to play with or, more variety of weapons - Cliff Bleszinsky mentioned they wanted to give all sorts of one-off events and varied scenarios, but the demo gives little indication of what he had in mind. The elevator is the only thing that hints at any variety. The rest of the demo is the same two enemy types scattered about a linear landscape.

My guess is that the option greyed out in the retail release

As long as it's complete with rainbows instead of blood, I would also play this version of the game.

I felt the same about my score, but I'd say my interest has increased a bit after the demo. There seems to be a very large skill ceiling with pulling off the combos effectively. Most shooters don't offer much room for personal skill growth outside of map/set-piece memorization or learning to aim better.

The demo made me think this is almost a bit more akin to an action game (ala Devil May Cry or Bayonetta) where you can get through almost purely by button mashing, but the combat becomes exponentially more satisfying once you learn the intricacies of the system. I got a score of about 6k on my second demo playthrough, and trying to think of how I could possibly get that up to 18k seems a bit overwhelming, but it excites me that the solution is crazy variety instead of shoot more dudez in teh head.

More of my thoughts:

I played a round at lunch and improved to 7000-something.

Me too. I was so psyched to finally have a chance to learn the great language of Train but something about the gameplay just didn't click. I went through the demo twice last night looking for new ways to creatively destroy enemies. Hubby tries it out and surpasses my score by performing the same set of high scoring moves over and over again with the occasional "I don't know what I just did but I got lots of points for it" maneuver.

I may try the demo a few more times to see if I can get used to this first person arcade shmup thing.

I'll play the demo next week (XBL silver), but the comments I'm hearing seem to suggest that Epic/PCF's opinion of where the fun comes from in the game doesn't match the players'. They seem to have placed an enormous emphasis on the skillshots, and while I think they would work quite well as a novelty, the designers seem to be thinking they're the core of the game, which leaves me wondering about the rest of the game.

Am I meant to be doing skillshots for every single enemy to be having fun? That sounds like drawing out a game, and going by comments here, drawing it out with something that's not going to be fun for however long the campaign is.

In short, I hope the game isn't all novelty.

I was a bit let down as well. I can't put my finger on what is missing. I just not having much fun with the demo.

I really enjoyed the demo and am looking forward to the full release. The controls were tight and well tuned and the graphic performance was crisp. The game feels like a weird combo of The Club, Unreal Tournament, with a dash of FEAR thrown in. The one liners and humor are ridiculously stupid and over the top juvenile, but I think that is part of the goofy charm. Painkiller is in my top 10 games of all time so I am glad to see People Can Fly back in action again.

Take a look at the post I linked above (it's a bit long to copy in) and let me know your thoughts. Basically I believe the game is really a score-attack arcade game in FPS form. In other words... yeah, it's all about the skill shots.

But without the agonizingly weak controls of The Club. Something about a slow-motion grapple and aiming at the head turning it into gooey Jell-O does something for me. Not as much as grappling somebody over and kicking them off a ledge and then shooting them in the head.

I had this on pre-order, and then I tried the demo....I cancelled my pre-order shortly thereafter.

While it was fun, it wasn't $60 fun. It is something that seems like it would be more fun watching someone else play on a couch or something.

I agree, I'd say it is around 30-40 dollars fun, maybe. Oh well, I guess I'll be shifting my pre-order over to Brink then.

From the sounds of the game that was always what I was expecting. The idea seems to be that, like Vanquish, you can play through the game and have a satisfying experience, but for longevity you can chase your friend's scores by using the combos etc.

We don't know yet whether the rest of the game is satisfying on its own before taking advantage of the score attack features. One reason the game, while appealing, wasn't on my Day 1 list.

I found the dialog to be more vulgar than funny, though not offensively so. I thought it was kind of cool how hard they're playing up the "pirate" angle, because that guy is overtly trying to talk like a pirate, and that is very silly and amusing to me.

It's really the gameplay I'm worried about. To me, this game is the real sequel to Duke Nukem. It's the same kind of totally ridiculous nonsense that was Duke's claim to fame, except unlike the new Duke game, it iterates on that and does something new (burn). The shooting feels solid and the weapons in the demo are varied enough to be interesting. The tether mechanic works for what it is.

Thing is, I found I was constantly pulling guys in with the tether, kicking them in the head, and then shooting them. Over and over and over. This is a problem that has haunted CRPGs since the beginning; once a player finds something that works, they have little reason to try anything else unless it suddenly stops working. Bulletstorm encourages us to try new kills by ways of rewarding points. I generally do not care about high scores in the slightest. If I need X points to unlock a new weapon or something, sure, I'm all about that. If I need X points to get to the top of a scoreboard, then guess what: tether, kick, shoot.

Since the selling point of the game is "kill with skill," I don't know how much enjoyment I'll get out of it as long as that carrot holds no particular appeal for me.

That said, I like the art style quite a lot. The demo level is interesting (I'm a sucker for derelict buildings) and the characters look decent, except for the guy with the slice of ham on the side of his head, who looks like a goofy 1960's cyborg.
