Let's buy Edwin a PC before he explodes. It's for the common good.

It's less fun to just paypal him stuff but... way easier in the long run.

Let's wait until he notices this is here and tries to stop us. Then ignore him and browbeat his paypal addy out of him. Then gives him various monies. That a plan?

In the event that someone has a complete system they aren't using or can part with on the cheap, maybe the plan will change.

I have his Paypal address already.

A number of you guys know him better than me. Just start sending him stuff or wait a while to see if he refuses to accept or if someone with an extra system shows up?

Just paid a friend's rent, so I'm in a generous mood today, and I'm up for a Paypal donation. It does lack the potential lulz of hundreds of boxes of used computer parts showing up on Edwin's doorstep, though.

We totally should have done this through Clover as a surprise.

Hindsight sucks.

I just threw out an accumulated ton of PC crap a month or so ago, mostly old useless stuff. But, I'd be happy to contribute. Let me know.

There's time to delete the thread. If he's seen it, he's not talking. I can make a list of people interested and we can spread the word more organically than having this on the forum.

I probably can't browse the internet on his PS2...

Just ask nicely.

Haa haa... that started out differently and then I forgot to change the beginning... joke fail. Whatevs.

I'm in for a paypal donation, the man needs a machine!

I'd be worried about donating to him via Paypal. Have you seen how often he updates his Goodreads list? He might buy books instead of a computer!

Seriously though, I'd still be in for a donation.

and you have an OS I assume, yes?

The best OSs are free anyway.

We must keep him from reading or doing foolish things like paying bills at all costs.

What if we just PayPal Oily and then he can buy a bundle of parts to send Edwin from Newegg. That would definitely be the easiest thing to do. We'd have to figure out what the budget is. I'd probably only be good for 20-40 (but could probably be convinced to go higher). I'm not sure how many people we've got going as of now.

Maybe we can do a halfway thing where we donate money to buy him parts from new egg and have them ship the parts to him?

I would be more comfortable with this idea as I really don't want to be in charge of everyone's money.

In that vein, let's do a few things:

1.) We should get Edwin or someone close to him in on it. See what he has (for instance, do we need to get a monitor?), what his stuff is compatible with and what he needs to put something together.
2.) Those of you who like bargain hunting, try to put together a PC in the $200 to $300 range from reputable online vendors like new egg and tiger direct.

Once we have a gameplan that way, we can move some money around, order stuff, and get that shipped out to him.

Count me in for a Paypal donation.

I will gladly provide start up capital for this venture.

Can Edwin assemble it?

Buying parts is cheaper.

That looks good, and maybe we can still get tanstaalf to donate the nVidia 8600.

That sounds like an excellent idea. I'm on board with this idea.

Sounds good. Shall we collect money and send it to him?

(the sooner we decide, the sooner I can delete the thread and maybe it will still be a surprise)

Put me down for 30 (for now). PM on who to send the monies to.

Send me a PM, and I shall donate what I can.

want to post a link so we can just send, and then you can list contributors when you get it to him?

Newegg does have gift cards. Maybe we should collect and then send him the card? I'm not sure if they are virtual or not, but I saw the place to enter one in when purchasing.

I'm up for a donation, needless to say.

Yeah, if I'd be up for donating a bit if that's the route we decide to go with. It's definitely simpler than shipping a bunch of different parts from a bunch of different places.

I don't have any old PC parts to contribute...moved to laptops when Olivia was born. I don't have much cash either, being laid off sucks.

Moral support counts though. You guys rock!
