EVE Online - Catch All & new meat check-in

Have you guys heard of this guide? http://www.eveonline.hu/guides/ISK/e...
It's basically EVE : the missing manual. I found it surprisingly well done. Comprehensive doesn't even begin to describe it.

Oh wow! I will definitely be going over that guide.

I did my 5 day free trial, took me about a day to relearn how to fly and not die quite so fast. Eve is the game I always wanted to really dive deep into, but somehow playing it has always felt like a job. Maybe I never hooked up with the right people, but I think I need to give it a little more time.

The new character creation videos showing up on youtube from the test server are f*cking gorgeous.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTH_e...

The question is, do I create the hyper-realized but slightly more attractive version of myself. Or do I say "Screw it!" and make Harrison Ford or someone similar.

le sigh...

Can't recreate a "Baron Harkonnen"-look, alas no anti-grav chairs.

I rarely even load eve these days, but CCPs continual addition of free and significant content, as well as things like graphical updates and now improved character customization, has always made me have a lot of respect for them. It almost gives me hope for the WoD mmo (and hope is not something I tend to let myself have pre-release for mmos anymore).

Aside from the free and high quality additions Eve is also the only game I know of where you can pay for your subscription with in game work. Heck I went from a total noob to eventually having something like 18 months into the future paid for entirely with isk (I think I expire in August this year finally, but with a bit of effort in game I could extend that again if so desired). I don't think monthly fees are terribly expensive, but I think it's cool that the ability to effectively be rewarded in real life for being in-game rich is there.

So I've finally taken the dive into Eve and am kind of digging it so far. I had one snafu though. I got to mission 10 of 10 in the advanced combat tutorial and didn't notice that my agent gave me a destroyer to assassinate a specific target so I went in with my weak frigate, got tackled by the NPC's and died, losing a lot of the good cargo I had been accumulating. It's nothing huge, but now I'm poor and too afraid to take my destroyer into the mission without properly outfitting it.

My name is Chief Grubber and I am now trying to mine my way out of poverty

Mine your way into the GWJeve channel and there will be plenty of friendly peeps there to help you out.

Has anyone done the new character creator yet? I saw some YouTube videos and I am really quite excited to try it out tonight.

Yeah - quite happy with mine, but be careful, there's nothing to say 'Are you sure you're happy with this ?' and I don't think you can alter them. You also get an option to take 4 mugshots of your character, but I can't see what that is for as there does not appear to be a way of switching between them.

The new creator is released into the wild now? Or still just the test server?

Yes it has been released.

It's on Tranquility now; that's what yesterday's patch was for.

That is a damn handy guide! Never mind that I could strangle the people who made it for choosing that PDF style.

For anyone using it this guide for help with the skills system, you should know that the Learning Skills no longer exist. The guide talks them up, but they have been removed from the game.

So I've been playing for about 2 months now. I'm hooked.

I got into Eve University and only gave it about a week or two before I bailed. They got war decced and it basically shuts their corp down besides the odd fleet roam with 50+ people. While they explained a few things to me I felt like it was just taking to long.

Ended up joining with the Rock Paper Shotgun guys, and have been with them for about a month now. Thats when the game really started to pick up. Moved myself down to low sec and they provided funds for a ton of rifters. Been flying into null sec with gangs of 5 - 20 people. I've been tackling and scouting and also learning a lot about the game. Eve Uni's intel channel on fleets is kept in the back room, can't hear what's being debated. Just being able to listen to what these guys are discussing I've picked up a lot. I've also gotten on numerous kill mails.

This has also led me to roaming around low sec getting myself into trouble solo. Have only killed another rifter by myself, but have gotten myself blown up a good number of times, and annoyed atleast a dozen people in drakes.

My advice to all the other newbies that are interested in PvP is to just start doing it. No point in waiting. There's a few newbies in the corp, and then a good number of veterans. We've also got a good number of people from State Corp. Who you can read about here:

In game name is: Kaahz. Message me if you want to get into some pew-pew-pewing.

Anyone come up with any good portraits? Here are mine, before and after:

They changed the artstyle too much, so I just gave up on trying to go for resemblance. You can make some good looking characters, but in a lot of ways they butchered the racial identities.

I agree. Hopefully with the tattoos they've promised for a future release, and of course Incarna which I suppose will bring more clothing options, we'll be able to have a more distinctive racial look. Although, on a more positive note, we can now have people from the same bloodline look drastically different. At the end of the day, I think they've done a pretty good job

Here's my characters, old and new:

I hope they bring back some of the weird apparel and clothing options too. For example:

Right now you can only wear more or less 'normal' looking stuff

i have to disagree with that...you need to spend some time getting used to flying and junk like that, plus building up some skills to really get into some pvp....i have been playing for a while now...and have joined up with Mostly Harmless....those guys really know their stuff when it comes to PVP...I am running a Pilgrim for them and let me tell you...there is nothing sweeter than launching a cyno and watching the mayhem that ensues, lol. Since you are down here though, hit me up sometime...i might go on some pew pewing with you. Name is Xandila

I've resubbed. Look for me as Casisto in the GWJ channel.

I've been pretty happy seeing the "full house" in the GWJ Channel, although there never seems to be too much chatter in there (I'm pretty sure we're all busy enough in our other 40 channels, right? 40 is normal, right?!?). Still, it's good to see so many fine, intelligent, upstanding citizens in there.

there for a while, no one was ever in the channel. But it is nice to get on and see a few people. I too, would like to see more chatting in there, but if you are like me, i am constantly watching local, plus 4 intel channels, alliance chat, corp chat and corp application chat. Then add in all the running and gunning...but hit me up anyway, and I will respond when i can. Name is Xandila

You mean you're snooping on someone else's channel to gain intel?

Likely not; I've been an intel body/scout in a previous corp; it's not uncommon to have multiple levels of intel to restrict access, which is strikingly similar to real life.

I reupped ... and started a new character. The character creator is all kinds of awesome. Dunno if this'll just be another one-off month of playing or not. This game just calls to me and not because I'm addicted, but because there's just so much to it.

Hey guys - I had a question for y'all.

I played EVE a while back, and I found it fascinating. I'm don't think I'm ready to head back in, but I enthusiastically describe it to other gamers who will listen about it.

Last night I was describing it to a co-worker, and I was telling him how virtually every aspect of the economy is controlled by players, the laws of supply/demand, etc. I told him how this naturally leads to scams both large and small.

I know there have been some massive scams in EVE over the years, but there was one story in particular that I wanted to send him, but I can't find it - I'm hoping one of the regular players here can help me figure out where it is.

The story was written by the scammer and it described, in detail, how built up a huge amount of trust, and eventually blinked out of existence with a truckload of ISK.

Here are the things that stood out in my mind that will maybe help somebody remember this one: He mentioned speaking to people IRL about the game (as part of his phony trust building), and he said he did it from a phone at his local library. He also mentioned that at least one of the people close to him in the scam either cried on the phone, or told him online via chat that he was in tears about it (I can't remember which). At the end of the story, he claimed that he wired all the ISK to a noob he found near one of the starting areas.

Does anybody know who this could be? Frankly, that story is what got me playing EVE - not because it seemed like something I would do, but the fact that it was possible at all in an MMO seemed inspiring to me.

What you describe really sounds like The Guiding Hand Social Club which Scratched linked. It's really one of the big, major stories that truly broke EVE into the more mainline awareness, and it's one of the things that CCP really plays up in some of their trailers.
