SC2 Pro Tournament Discussion

Wow! Idra makes it through too! What a great, tense, exhausting series of games. You definitely should watch them, but just make sure you've got a bit more time than usual for it.

Thank you Jinro!

SCReddit was seriously kicking GSL's ass with good macro games until this.

Yeah, no surprise it took two non-Koreans to do it. Nice to see Western style in the GSL (and credit to Ensare for his fine macro play as well).

Best group of the entire tournament so far.

Much like the casters, I was expecting Check to lose 2 in a row and the series to get cut to five games with the other three competing for 1st and 2nd. Instead Check made Jinro pay bigtime for one small mistake and took a ZvT on Jungle Basin, which is exceedingly rare, and the group just got better from there.

Jinro and Ensnare was epic, and Check/Idra was actually fairly tense, with them running circles around that raised ground in the center of Jungle Basin with those large ground armies.

Just such a great set of matches, and it even ended the way I think most of us wanted it to

Can someone do a summary of IdrA vs Jinro please?=) if you have time

I'd recommend reading Team Liquid's recap if you can. It's pretty detailed.

Perfect, thanks!

A jinro v immvp match would be some sick tvt...

I can't stand choya for some reason. He seems very gimmicky and cheesy but he has a lot of success against top players.

I did find it amusing that choya screwed himself over against MVP by destroying the rocks.

I'd like to see him play NaDa and Boxer actually. I feel like both of them much prefer the same macro style game that Jinro does.

With MVP it's much more likely that he'll pull off something nuts in the first ten minutes and win before things really get moving.

*Good first match in Code A today. July barely squeaks out a win with a fairly epic finish to game 3, snipes the Spire with a big roach push right as the first five mutas start morphing, and then manages to just barely take out the lair before the eventually spawned mutas finish off his roach force. He wins the game based mostly on the solid placement of three last minute spore colonies

Round of 16 are very entertaining to watch so far. People are doing some pretty sneaky things without being cheesy.

The jinro v Ensnare match was the best T V T I've ever seen.

Holy crap!

Idra 3-0's his group, taking out Clide, Genius, and frickin Nada.

Oh, and shortly after clide lost to Nada going 0-2 and ended up done for the tournament, this happened:

Idra's Twitter wrote:

lol@clide

See that? See it? This is why you don't call people out and talk trash before a game. Because when it's over if you didn't make good on all your talk the other guy can say pretty much whatever he wants.

Kind of disappointed NaDa went for a gimmicky build against IdrA. He had the superior position and could have just denied that third through more standard play. I think had the game not been for 1/2 (since position doesn't really matter at this point) we would have gotten a better game.

Actually position matters a lot because it decides who plays against who in the next round.

For instance, if MC wins his group, I'm pretty sure Nada draws him in the round of 8.

I realize that, but with the level of skill that's left I don't think it does matter that much. MC is certainly top of the class, but I wouldn't be hoping to get first so I could play Rainbow, Jinro or Foxer. Plus, you never know who's going to finish first. I doubt many people thought IdrA would go 3-0.

Dunno if anybody watched the interviews, but Idra didn't even expect to move on, much less go 3-0. He was just as surprised as anybody else was, and said as much in his interview with Artosis after the games were done.

But seriously, seeding does matter even at this point. MC has actually gotten more dominant since his championship run. He drops a game here and there, but for the most part is incredibly solid.

If he keeps up his current level of performance I think Nestea is probably the other one to avoid. He's looked really good so far.

*Nevermind. Looks like the group format stays, albeit slightly altered. Lame. I don't understand why when they get this far in they don't switch to at least best of 3's. Looking at the schedule for next week on the Gom website reads like there's only going to be 3 games for each RO8 group. The first two, and then the winners playing to decide the person entering the finals.

The one thing I like is that instead of the empty week between the games leading up to the finals, they're going to air the Up and Down matches that entire week, and then do the finals right after.

I was pretty sure that it reverts to a standard tournament after this group stage. At least that's how it was on the original schedule.

Code A is live right now, for anybody that wasn't aware of the change in air time.

*Good lord.

That is why nobody wants to play against MC.

Holy sh*t. This guy is gonna make Blizz nerf FFs.

Wow. MC attacked and then... didn't win instantly. I'm so confused!

*MC/Jinro turning into a Macro game. So cool.

*HOOOLY sh*t WOOHOO!

Wow! It's going to be heartbreaking now if Jinro doesn't advance.

Goddamn it, I went to get my soup from the kitchen and I missed the final push Jinro was amazing all game long.

Ugh. What an ill-considered build for Rainbow to try to pull on MarineKing. It looks like then it's going to be a Jinro v MC rematch? That's really rough for Jinro.
Edit: And the winner of Jinro v MC plays Idra in the round of 8? That's really not cool.

Yeah, Jinro dropping that first game against MarineKing *really* killed the matchups I was hoping to see.

I'd also expect MC to go far, far heavier on early pressure in the next game against Jinro than he did in the first.

*And there was the pressure, Jinro with the hero defense though. Phew. Down by half on workers though

Come on dude, pull this one out. Give us two foreigners in the Round of 8.

Well, at least we're getting to see carriers.

4dSwissCheese wrote:

I'd rather not

Base race?

Edit: I don't know what to say! That was amazing! Once again, it's a real shame that Jinro and Idra have to play each other next round. But nonetheless, they've both done really fantastically.

Wow, this game is completely nuts.

And a win for Jinro. Wow. Just... Wow. NO FRICKIN WAY.

*Watching the GSL thread on Team Liquid is hysterical. It's gone up like 30 pages in barely a minute.

Just... incredible! I'm speechless, Jinro is unbelievable. Every time I watch him he seems twice as good as before.
It sucks that Jinro and Idra will face each other but at least these guys will finally show a good, solid macro-oriented series. Something the koreans haven't really done afaik, in the GSL.

Yeah, I'm so glad that if it has to happen at least it's a best of 3, though I'd prefer a best of 5.

On another note, I want State of the Game back. I gotta hear them talk about that one.
