Did your pile become less of a mountain? - 2011 in review

But, I may pick up Dishwasher: Dead Samurai in the zombie sale this week (see XBL Deals of the Week) Of course, am I going against the spirit of this thread by succumbing to a new, unplanned purchase so early? I signed up more to force myself to tackle some of those pile games rather than to limit my spending, but I still feel guilty.

I would suggest against Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. I picked it up when it was on sale several months ago. I liked the demo, but it was incredibly misleading. The demo is the first stage, which makes the game seem like a decent, if not very deep brawler. In the beginning of the second level is an obnoxious kill room, with what seemed like endless enemies that spam grenades. When you beat a level, it unlocks to be replayed, and unlocks the next level, but only for the current difficulty, so I couldn't even turn do the difficulty without restarting. That is annoying in any game, but in a game with discrete levels, and level select of completed levels, it is bad design.

The combat wasn't good or deep enough to bother replaying that first level, just to see if maybe the second level isn't garbage on a lower difficulty, so I dropped it and moved on. You may enjoy it, but personally, I'd save the $5.

Dis-enabled! Thanks.

Or maybe, just maybe, you're the most realistic amongst us...

You can feel like a wimp when you get to the end of the year and everyone has actually cleared 3x the games from their pile that you have. For now it just looks like you're being honest with yourself. Though, to be fair I tried to list pretty much everything I had, as I had no idea which games I'd choose to work on through the year. Unfortunately, the list of games I missed/forgot just hit 20.

I thought it was a pretty good game, and even finished it on the second-hardest difficulty despite brawlers not really being my thing. There's a lot more depth once you can choose your weapon loadout, which it doesn't seem like Garden Ninja got to see. And an arcade mode, which is just good slash-em-up fun for five minutes or so. The thing that irked me the most, however, was the odd-numbered achievements (17 points, 12 points, etc). And the VERY hardest difficulty is dominatingly difficult.

Given the nature of this thread, maybe you don't wanna buy it... but I just wanted to throw in my halfhearted defense.

I'm contemplating scratching all those iOS games off my list as a lost cause. I literally just bought many of them, but I don't carry my iPod around anymore and have only once even turned it on since I got my new phone. I honestly don't know when I'll get to them, if ever.

I have a similar stack of PC games (like, 50) that I bought in the 2009 Steam holiday sale because I thought I'd be getting a gaming PC soon. However, when that didn't pan out, I scratched them all off the pile because I simply can't play most of them.

What do you think: realistic pile management, or cheating?

I should do this, but the prospect of going through my pile is a little scary

Cheating. Build a pc and play those games!

... naw, not really. If you don't have the means to play them, then I wouldn't really consider them a candidate for the pile. Also, if you are abandoning them, then they're not for the pile either. The pile is for games you want to play, but haven't. At least that's how I see it.

Yep, same here. It's to make sure games get the attention they deserve.

So I wanted to say that I've successfully disabled myself on pre-ordering Dragon Age 2 considering I'm still working on Dragon Age: Origins and haven't even begun Awakenings. I feel pretty good about it, however, I still feel like I'm missing out on something even though I know I'll be able to get Dragon Age 2 cheaper later and hopefully get the special content from the Signature Edition later, cheaper and when I'm ready to play it and on a PC that can run it (my current laptop is questionable as to whether it can run it or not). It is difficult though, I do admit, Bioware is putting out its best siren songs to try to lure me into that pre-order.

I've also added a few games to the 2010 releases that I would like to purchase based on recommendations and GOTY features I've read.

I'm making good progress in Red Dead Redemption, remembering why I really liked it in the first place and most importantly, having fun with it again. It will fall within the week I imagine, even though the ending has been partially ruined for me by a friend.

That is certainly a fair statement. I could have given it a fairer shake. I could have missed something obvious that would have made that fight easier, and it wouldn't take that long to replay the first level on a lower difficulty. At the time though, the demo felt misleading, and I had a bunch of other, more fun games that I could play instead. I may give it another try at some point.

Definitely. If this were a different thread, I probably would have said that I didn't enjoy it, but it's only $5, so give it a shot, because you might.

Games of 2010 I Might Purchase

Lots, but I'm going to try and hold myself from doing so, especially long or story driven games. Backlog, be gone!

Realistically, What Can I Accomplish?

I'm listing the games I want to see played. Many are already in progress, since that's lately been my attitude towards games. Play a couple hours and then move onto the next thing that captures my attention. I'm awful.

DS

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney - Case Four - Flashback - Trial pt.2
Etrian Oddysey - Up to B10F
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes - Near the end

PC

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Stopped playing when you find the Batmobile
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Finished the first mission
Ben There, Dan That! & Time Gentlemen, Please! - Stopped playing during the graveyard/church area when AGS became bugged

Braid - Stopped a little over halfway through
Condemned: Criminal Origins - Almost finished, bug impaired my progress.
Defense Grid: The Awakening - Around 1/4 done
Deus Ex - Near completed once, must finish before Human Revolution

Guild Wars & expansions - Played some of the original, want to play through it once before Guild Wars 2

The Witcher - A little ways into Vizima

PS3

Brutal Legend - In the second hub
Condemned 2: Bloodshot - Finish 1

Super Mario Galaxy - 60 stars
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - ~30 stars
Super Paper Mario - One of the last worlds
Zack and Wiki - Stuck on the laboratory level

Gamecube

I'm dreaming here, but I thought I'd list what little I have.

Chibi-Robo - Not sure
Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat - Not sure
Eternal Darkness - Not sure
Gladius - ~3 hours
Killer 7 - Not sure
Resident Evil

I, cyrax, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

I've already dis enabled myself on one game this year, LBP2. It looks so good, and look at all the stuff I can do!, but I just look at DA:O and the soon to be released Monday Night Combat. Feels good.

Well, I spent enough time on this as it is. Time to start playing!

I'm currently playing Dragon Age: Origins and Drawn: The Painted Tower.

OK, I copied over what I remember from my own pile Google doc, with a few percentages. I think I'll tackle the small things first - Prince of Persia DLC and God of War 3.

Just want to jump in again on Dishwasher: Dead Samurai and say that I found it to be one of the most enjoyable sit-down-and-enjoy-the-Hell-out-of games. The grenades are a pain to get used to at first, but after some practice you learn how to deal with each of the enemies.

In truth, though, I hardly found the story mode so replayable as the arcade modes. That's the reason to own the game. The story mode is just practice for you to learn the mechanics of combat.

As part of the Activision Sale on XBL, both of the T:WfC map packs are on special 800 400 space bucks. Linked to the TA story, as Major Nelson's blog has these particular packs listed under DJ Hero 2 DLC (as of this post).

Sale ends 17 January, there's some other stuff listed in the article too, so beware.

I did notice that. Are those just multiplayer maps? (internet says yes, with some extra characters) My next question was if there were any associated achievements and fortunately there are not. I think I can safely skip them.

You can be in my TA circle of trust, because that was my exact thought process.

Will we get bumped from MP matches though if we don't have the maps (as per Gears of War 2)? Multiplayer cheevos might be a bit hard to get to in the near future depending on the online atrophy, and it would be bad to get bumped from one of the few remaining games due to a lack of map compatibility...

Is $10 (or there abouts) worth it for future proofing? (or is this mentality the root cause of a significant amount of pile bloatage)

Well, technically it isn't pile bloatage because it isn't really adding anything to the length of the game. It's just dollars out of your wallet for a more comprehensive multiplayer experience - if people are still playing at all. I am content to have achievement gaps where multiplayer is concerned, so the choice is easy. Plus, I can apply my tried and true Expected Value calculations from poker to determine how much money I'll save. There's maybe a 10% chance I'll really want the maps in the future. If choose to buy now I save $20 - $9 ($10*90%) = $11. If I end up buying later (only 10% of the time) it would be $20 - $2 ($20*10%) = $18. So, in the long run I'll save more by not pulling the trigger. I must really not to read these work docs if I'm starting to break out math instead.

I agree, with the caveat that if/when you do get a new PC that can run those games, that you re-evaluate them. I think it is totally okay to decide you aren't interested in a game and move on, but you were interested enough at one point to buy them, so when lack of a capable PC is no longer an obstacle, check them out again, even if they are no longer the new hotness.

Yes.

It may be worth it for future proofing, but it is also the attitude that got us (or me at least, but I imagine others as well) to this point in the first place. I would say that if you definitely want to play the DLC (even if not right away), then get it now, while it's on sale. However, if you are thinking of getting it because you might play it later, in some hypothetical future, don't, especially if you are concerned about the MP servers being empty. If you decide later on that you want to play it after all, buy it then.

It's like science, Female Doggoes!

Damn, I didn't know Prinny 2 was coming out so early in the year. Oh well, it'll be there for me when I'm ready. My Nook has replaced handheld gaming as of late.

Red Dead Redemption is complete! 87.5% completion percentage is enough for me, I am glad to finally finish it and I am glad that I took the time to play it to its conclusion and it feels great to start 2011 off by removing one game from the pile!

Got Fable 3 for $30 with DLC codes from a friend. Added to the list.

Cyrax, finally got around to adding you into the Google Doc.

Sorry for the delay, but I've been juggling two sick toddlers. Our almost 3 year old got off lightly, but the gastro bug that's been flying around down here knocked our 17 month old for 6... Doing OK now, but there's been a tonne of laundry, and not much sleep. Who would have thought 65cm of human could produce so much vomit!?!?

Let me know if I need to update any additional info for you guys, but you all seem to be doing a good job of 'striking through' and 'adding' where necessary.

Time to fess up myself. Thanks to some nasty enabling by Minarchist in his TA feed, I picked up Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom for $39 (down from $89.95). It was on my radar, and the price was right. Outing my shame in public for getting a non declared title, and adding it to the list...

I need to finish Assassins Creed:Brotherhood, Mass Effect 2, Halo:Reach, Force Unleashed 2

Anybody with small children.

Glad y'all are back right with the world.

Majin is winging it's way to me as we speak, courtesy of Goozex. It wasn't on my list - I'll add it when I do my big update - and even though I didn't have to pay for it, it's one more game on the pile. I am feeling more guilty about some of the 2011 games that I didn't put on my list that I am starting to lean towards picking up close to launch.

Stay strong!

I had this problem last year when I did a 12 month - pile only - play year. It was a little easier for me, as I had financial constaints put on me at the same time. All I can offer as advice is this:
Anything I bought last year is still sitting on the pile this year. The only difference is, it's also sitting on the store shelves at around 50% less than what I payed for it OR in a GOTY version that has the DLC I also bought and didn't play included for a cheaper price.

Stick to your original list, limit the new shiny! You do feel a little 'put out' around release as all your friends are talking about the latest thing, but that passes. We all have enough (great) games to keep us going in the long run... Being Alpha-consumers is what put us in this mess in the first place.

PS: Thanks Chumpy

My pile has been getting completely out of hand so I decided to join this thread. Unfortunately it looks like 2011 is going to be an insane year for gaming.

Games in my collection I want to finish:
PC
Gothic 4
Alpha Protocol
Fallout New Vegas
Farcry 2
Stalker Call of Pripyat
Kane and Lynch
Metro 2033
Sacred 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Cryostasis
Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga
Mirror's Edge
Age of Empires 3

Xbox 360
Split Second
Kane and Lynch 2
Saboteur
Halo Wars
Castlevania Lords of Shadow
F1 2010
Tomb Raider Underworld
Transformers War for Cybertron
Bayonetta
NFS Hot Pursuit
Midnight Club LA
Undead Redemption
GTA 4
Lost Odyssey
Vandal Hearts FOJ
Deathspank TOV

PS3
Killzone 2
Uncharted
Infamous
Metal Gear Solid 4
Valkyrie Chronicles
Little Big Planet
Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time

2011 Purchases
Dead Space 2
Test Drive Unlimited 2
Portal 2
Witcher 2
Dirt 3
Forza 4
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3
Mass Effect 3
Elder Scroll: Skyrim
Batman Arkham City
NFS Shift 2
Rage

I feel a little sick after typing that all out. Especially considering there are a number of 2011 releases I'm interested in that I didn't put on the list because I'll wait on reviews (La Noire, Dragon Age 2, etc). It doesn't help that most of the games in my pile are fairly long to ridiculously long. I have a problem!

1 down (PoP 2008 DLC), many more to go.

Tidalis is off the list. I've put a good hour or so into it, and I just can't get into it. There's a lot of potential in the mechanics, but they don't feel smoothed out here. I feel bad for abandoning this one since it was a gift, but I'm not enjoying it.

This is my edited and final list of currently owned games.

XBOX 360
-Alan Wake. I have beaten the game and have about 46/50 on the original game. I would like to make that 50/50, and to finish up the DLC. I loved the game and want to do this.
-Batman: AA. I have beaten the game on hard and gotten all the main game achievements. I would like to clean up a few of the challenge room ones and then will call this done.
-Battlefield BC 2. I would like to get a couple more achievements, but will probably hang on to this one for a while. This was my
-Borderlands. Loved this game, and i have the GOTY. I want to 100% this game.
-The Darkness. I have had this for nearly a year, and not put it in once. Need to find some people to do some of the multiplayer achievements with.
-Dead Space. I want to 100% this game at some point.
-DJ Hero. Really like this game, I want to get a few more achievements and I am done with it.
-Fable 3 - Need to do this game. I bought the guide and am going for 100% completion.
-Fallout 3, with all the DLC. That is my first game of the year, and I am going to be putting a lot of time in with it. I probably won't touch another game until i get through the story / 80% of the achievements in the main game.
-Gears of War. I need to play this on insane and co-op and I am done with it.
-Gears of war 2. I want my wings.
-GTA4 and DLC - I want to get through this. I would like to clean up a few more achievements in main game, and beat both DLCs.
-Halo 3. I would like to get a few multi-player achievements and play through the campaign again with scoring on, but basically I am done with this one now.
-Halo 3 ODST. I would like to clean up single player achievements.
-Halo Wars. What a great game. I want a few more achievements out of here.
-Halo Reach. Loved it, but am just keeping the game to play with goodjers.
-Lost Planet. Need to finish the campaign to up my completion %.
-Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. I need to do the multiplayer achievements, but I have never played that mode. Any goodjers wanna play with me?
-Metro 2033. Am super excited for this game, but want to read the book first. I am reading it in Russian and about halfway through, but keep chasing achievements in the evening rather than reading. Bad Sally.
-Prototype. I played this on ps3, but got it free when I bought Singularity. When I get a chance I would like to get 80%ish on this game. I thought it was a lot of fun, but brainless.
-Lego Star Wars. Don't you judge me - these games are great! I want to get 80% achievements in this then I will be done.
-Transformers: WFC. I would like to get about 80% of the achievements in this game. Not too terribly interested in the DLC, but am down for getting my autob0t on.
-Splinter Cell: Conviction. I just need to do 2 co-op maps on expert and I will feel done with this game.
-Red Dead. I would like to 100% the single player, and am almost there. I also need to make it through the Undead Nightmare. What a good damn game.
-Viva Pinata. Thanks Wip3out! I would like to 100% this game.

PS3
- God of War 3

New games I will buy -
-Dead Space 2. Pre-ordered. I love this universe, and am anxiously anticipating this title.
-Dragon Age 2. Pre-ordered already
-Mass Effect 3. Do want.
-Batman: AC - this game deserves my money. I loved the first (not as much as Bonus, but a lot).

Games I want/that will distract me from the pile -
-Rage - anxiously hopeful.
-Homefront. I like the cut of this game's jib, at least so far.
-Deus Ex. Never played the first game, but am interested in the universe. We will see.

Games I will buy if they hit the below price points -
-Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition - $35
-Mass Effect 2 Ultimate (when announced) - $40. I beat it once already but want to try the DLC.
-Heavy Rain - $15

Also, by March I would like to have an 80% achievement completion percentage.

I, SallyNasty, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.
