There's Plenty of Pile for Everyone

Pages

Welcome to the first pile of shame thread for 2011. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday specials (some are still going on as I type this). I know my pile hasn't shrunk as much as it should.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the Google doc I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

Heavy Rain

This month's description is paraphrased for Wikipedia, as it contains slight spoilers from the beginning of the game.

"The game's prologue opens with Ethan Mars, spending his life with his family. Two years later, Ethan is suffering from depression, a fear of crowds, and blackouts that last for several hours. He is estranged from his wife, and his son, Shaun, is distant with him. While at a park with Shaun, Ethan has another blackout, and wakes to find Shaun missing.

Shaun's disappearance is soon tied to the serial murders of the Origami Killer. The criminal's modus operandi is to abduct a young boy during the rainy fall season, after which their bodies are found several days later in a remote location, drowning being the cause of death, along with an origami animal figure in their hands, and an orchid on their chest. FBI profiler Norman Jayden, having come to assist the police with the Origami Killer, concludes that the child is locked in a location where, after 6 inches of rainfall, their bodies will be completely submerged and die from drowning. They realize that they have less than three days to find Shaun." (wikipedia.org)

I'm going to start off with Heavy Rain. I got sidetracked during my original playthrough and just sort of moved on. I've got a couple of others in mind as well, but I'm going to see how this first one goes. No sense in setting myself up for failure on the first day of the new year.

I think a good chunk of my month will be devoted to Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Fallout: New Vegas, neither of which are pile of shame games yet, but there are four things that I do hope to clear from my pile, all on the 360 and all downloadable.

The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom
Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light
Magic the Gathering: Duel of the Planeswalkers (DLC packs 2 & 3)
Dragon Age: Origins (all DLC, including Awakening)

Having PB Winterbottom on the list may be a stretch. I started it up again shortly after midnight last night - I'd played through the first 2 areas back when it came out - and finished it around 5am in the morning. It was entirely contained within January, but preceded the creation of this thread, so I'll let Hemidal judge on whether that's valid. After tallying everything up in the 12-month pile plan thread, I realized that I needed to get started right away.

PB is fine with me. I sort of tweaked your game listings a bit to make them more generic. That way I can add additional people if they pick the same game, but aren't as specific on DLC, etc...

Fallout NV and Heavy Rain

No problem. I was just mentioning the DLC to make it seem slightly more manageable.

New Vegas isn't quite three months old yet. Next month it will be eligible.

Alright.... I'm not quite ready to draft a 12 month plan, but I can handle looking a month ahead. Dead Space 2 only arrives on the 25th, so it's almost like having a full month with no interesting releases (for me) again.

#1. Lucidity (PC) - Started in late December, but didn't finish.
#2. Dragon Age: Awakening (PC) - While I have until March to clear this, I don't want to risk a slippage
#3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - A Christmas gift.... I'm not going to let it linger on the pile for long

Usually 3 games in a month would be impossible for me, however with my wife going to Hong Kong for 10 days I'll have a lot of guilt-free geek time to utilize.

Still working on King's Bounty: The Legend.

Fallout 3 for this month.

I've owned Red Faction: Guerrilla for at least a year and haven't played more than 10 minutes.

I need to fix this.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game (PC) - I failed on this during the last thread, but I think I'm within 90 minutes of the end. So far there's only been one supremely frustrating fight on "experienced."
Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna (PC) - Halfway through chapter four out of five. Should take less than another 5 hours.

I was going to make Trauma Center: Under the Knife (NDS) my third "quick finish," but I got to section 5-9 (Death Awaits All), and I'm totally stuck on the operation. My hands don't move that quickly, sorry. On a youtube video, the player uses two stylii simultaneously to keep up! So instead, I'll start a game from scratch.
P.N. 03 (Gamecube), is a game which I got quite a ways into years ago, but never finished. It's supposed to be short (barring replays with upgraded suits), so I'll give it another go.

I want to wrap up Torchlight this month.

Please put me down for Call of Duty 4 and Napoleon Total War (at least beating the Napoleon French campaign).

Almost finished with AC II from the Steam sale. Also, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be complete int he next couple of weeks. I am having a blast with my 8 year old on that. After those, Prince of Persia; Sands of Time on PC if I can bear with the control issues I am having.

Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing and Dragon Age Origins on the 360 for me please (may have to leave Awakenings until next month).

One should balance the other out! I have the 4th of January all to myself, so I can finally hunker down and grab a big bite of DA:O to kick start the momentum for this title (being as it's a BIG one).

Put me down for Dragon Age: Origins. I'm about to get the Urn, so I should be able to see the credits this month.

I did not do great on the fall season pile clearing. For January, I'm going to aim for Bully, which I picked up in the Steam sale, and Mario Galaxy 2, which I've been working through slowly for at least three months now. I'm up to 45 stars or so.

As a clarification, does the 3 Month Rule just apply to release date, or is it the purchase date.

I was going to tackle Mass Effect 2 this month. However, while it came out almost a year ago, I actually only bought it 2 weeks ago.

I was also thinking Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, but that isn't quite 3 months old yet, so it can wait.

Regardless, I may tackle Far Cry 2, since that is the game I've had the longest. I'm already about 10 hours in, so the rest should be doable in a month.

I'm going to start participating in these as I think I need more focus when trying to reduce my massive pile.

For January, I'm playing Just Cause 2 and Heavy Rain. I'm also playing Super Meat Boy but I don't know if that qualifies for this thread.

Picking up from the end-of-year pile thread, I'll definitely finish Season 2 of Sam & Max this month. Since I only have a single episode left, that shouldn't take too long. I'll also put myself down for the original Fallout, which I've started a few times but never gotten beyond the first town. Now seems to be as good of a time to do so as any.

Just finished off Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers and all the accompanying DLC. Not going to bother with the co-op or multiplayer achievements, but I have everything else. The easier games are getting crossed off the list, but finishing up Dragon Age is going to take some time.

Release date.

Super mario bros (the "new" one for the wii)
Mario Galaxy 2
X3
Heavy Rain
Mass Effect 2 (just started this one)
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon (never did get past the dam)
Getting all the x4 items in LBP.

That's an ambitious goal for the month.

OK, since I'm in the mountain of shame list I guess I better start here.

I'm going to plan to finish Just Cause 2 this month. After it I'll hit Red Faction: Guerrilla since I feel I should be able to finish knocking it out.

Assuming I can quit playing Minecraft long enough.

January is going to have very little videogame time for me, but I will tentatively declare Dead Space. Again.

Right..back in action! and - assuming I can ever drag myself away from the two 'crafts (both Mine AND War) - for starters I am going to tackle Aliens Vs Predator 3 from my Steam Pile and see how we go from there.

I don't know what to choose from the big list.

I've started and am enjoying Recettear. Did it come out in Sept? I guess that barely counts as 3 months, so I can be down for that.

Need to clear something else from that top list though. Maybe Bioshock 2? Any suggestions?

How about pecking your way through Infamous while simultaneously working on completing The Witcher? Two quite different games so that you have something to play regardless of your mood.

Also: Grats on polishing off Demon's Souls - I hadn't noticed that you finished it. =)

Haven't done this in a while; put me down for Halo Reach this month. I might add something if I finish it with time to spare.

Assassin's Creed 2 - completed.
