NBA 2K11 - Wow!

None of the offensive challenges have given me any trouble. Had Mr. Drexler squeak over 20 points in the 4th twice now.

New strategy: Have Pippen cover him, ignore whoever Jordan is supposed to cover, and set to double/deny the SOB.

I'm also gonna hold the ball for all 24 seconds of each of my possessions, to limit his shot possibilities.

Those are EXACTLY what I did with Drexler. He had 16 at the half , after I pushed and got my 6 3s and 35+ (41 actually) in the first half with Jordan. So I stuck Pippen on him, double, deny, deny. Ran Iso with Jordan or Pippen under 8 seconds on the shot clock, every 2nd half possession. And Drexler ended the game with 16.

It was boring but effective.

OK, as much as I love this game.. I'm getting ready to shelve it.

I'm playing as the Celtics in Pro mode. I'm 0-7 in my season, and the CPU just plain cheats. I was playing the Bobcats last night, and was winning by 13 with 5 minutes left in the 4th. Playin conservative ball, Pierce was killing it from everwhere. All of a sudden, every shot starts missing and I end up losing the game!!!! I've seen this in a few of my games.

Is there a better difficulty where the CPU isn't as much of a cheat?

EDIT-Turns out there is something in the slider's called Clutch Factor which I need to turn off.

Turn off the setting where they anticipate the passing lanes. Or change the mode to simulation. The CPU does cheat. You can replay one of those "how did that go wrong."'steals and see CPU players doing a complete 180 and reaching to steal the ball with their back turned to you. To me it's like the AI in Madden/NCAA where suddenly a player leaps two feet in the air while facing the other direction to bat down a pass. The CPU is cheating. At that point it's time to give up or adjust the settings to retain your sanity.

Oh man the double-nickel game was fun. Clobbered the Knicks, 104-55. Starks went 6-20, 1-10 from 3. That was almost as bad as his real life finals performance that one year against Houston.

Hate the Knicks, especially the mid-90s ones. Loved watching Reggie or Michael kill them in the Garden.

I've got all the challenges done except the Lakers finals now. Four more games seems like such a chore -_-

Yeah I was kinda leaving that one for last.

My Player is slowly but steadily getting competent. Scored 20+ points in 3 games and got player of the week for the west.

I feel like I got a little cheated though. I played the Spurs and it's a "key game" because Ginobli is a star at SG. But during the game Tony Parker got hurt, out for 1-2 weeks. We played the Spurs again 2-3 games later. And they started Ginobli at point and Hill at the SG, so I didn't get a "key game" for them.

The Key game criteria seem a little weird. I used to get Key Games out of the Mavs for Dirk, but in year two he apparently became too low statistically to count.

He'd still put up 30 and grab 10 boards.

I am ashamed (but excited!) to admit I am restarting my PF. I'd always felt like a couple more inches could really make a difference so I made this one 7" instead of 6'10". If anyone's curious, the difference in skill points per game is about 200, only represented in the "Performance" slot. You still get 900 for A+, 750 for A, etc. Size your players accordingly.

Crap I meant to post this a week or so ago when Laars asked me about it on Steam.

Stat caps for my player, excel google doc.

Interesting bit is that "All Around" has the most total points available to the player, and Athletic is 2nd at every position. But in some cases, like SG, the difference between that and Athletic is only 8 points. But in other positions, like PF, the difference is a full 100 points between 1st and 2nd.

Of course that's overall points. Sometimes the individual stat maximums are more important. For instance, 3PT SG is capped at 90 speed, while Athletic SG has full 99 speed. But the difference in 3PT cap is 99 and 95 respectively. So really, is it worth giving up 9 speed to get 4 more 3PT skill?

I think it most cases it looks like All-Around or Athletic is your best choice. But at least with this list you can make that decision yourself instead of finding out down the road in your 2nd season that you're capped at a certain skill.

I always make my guys athletic because they start higher in the expensive-ass stats, like Quickness.

Whew. Finally, after 30 games, I am now a "floor general" according to the 2k guy. I get to call plays!

Not sure if the postgame questions matter so much because in the previous one, I got a neutral team one, but then bam, I can call plays. I wonder if it's just after 30 games or what? Or if it's something more than team loyalty?

Anybody else remember when they hit that?

The press conferences definitely have an effect. You can check your team's chemistry after getting different reactions by going NBA.com > Home Page and using RB/LB (R1/L1 for PS3 weirdos) to find your team. I think it was 3% or so for a positive team reaction.

It took me forever on the T-wolves because they have a low chemistry by default (winning helps a lot). I got that role after two games with the Bucks, but that's nowhere near as nice as the level of command you get when the advisor tells you "Your teammates really like you and they'll most likely get you the ball whenever you call for it." That's when I started being able to pour in 35 a night and shoot 70%.

Hm, have to check those stats out.

Why I'm really happy is since my GM traded Billups for me, and still hasn't made a move for our former starting SG, I've been spending probably 40-50% of my minutes running the point, even though my ball handling and passing is pretty lacking. Now I can just call some quick picks or iso and do something more effective than the same old boring plays.

Steam sale, $20.

Almost want to buy it again.

This game is so good, I'd buy it twice (once for PC, once for 360).

OK, I'm starting to hate this game.

I've tried adjusting the sliders, and I still cannot win a bloody game on Pro!

I'm of two minds about this game:

The presentation is outstanding. I really like what they do with NBA today and it feels like you're in the season. The Christmas advertising for NBA today was cute too. The Association mode is nice as well, and they sped it up so you're not staring at the screen simulating all time. I also like how they upgraded the Draft.

However, I can shoot for the life of me. My brain is wire for: Just tap to shoot. I haven't gotten the hang of the, release at the top of the shooting motion, and press L1 to bank it. Therefore, I lose almost every game unless I dive into the lane and take a bunch of foul shots.

Hasn't holding a button down until a player is at the top of his shooting motion been a common mechanic for almost 30 years?

Maybe 20. I think that was a SNES invention. Lakers vs. Bulls

I'm trying to remember if that was also the mechanic in Dr. J vs. Larry Bird on my old C-64. I think it was, but I may just be planting that memory now.

Didn't they do that in Larry Bird v. Magic Johnson?

EDIT: Crap, it was Dr. J...

However, even though I played that game, I can't shoot worth a damned in NBA 2k11.

I'm not sure how 2K11 really is, as I only played it a week or so. But I absolutely loved the shot stick in College Hoops 2K8. I found it to be intuitive, and the immersive way to play a basketball game I've ever had.

In fact, as the NBA season draws near the playoffs, I'm pretty sure I am going to try an pick this game up on sale somewhere. I'd have it now, but there is to much on my plate, and the game seems to require some dedication to really appreciate. I've used that time to learn the triple option, and now the run and shoot in NCAA 11.

I think I'm trading my copy in via Goozex. Love the game, but NCAA11 is just taking up my sports gaming time, as I feared it might.

As an aside, while I do enjoy the difficulty of it, I turned shooting from Shot Stick to Real Player % in Game Options.

So I got this in the 2K pack, and I'm bound determined to learn how to play. I was a diehard Live fan, and tried 2K a few years back but couldn't wrap my head around the control scheme. Now that I have no other choice, and the only choice on the PC for a couple years now, I've got to get this figured out.

Before I even try that, anyone have good sliders and settings I need to be using to get some good gameplay?

I know it was the mechanic for Double Dribble on the NES. That was released in '86.

Until the patch comes out, I've been switching between PuntNL's sliders (which are for use with Rashidi's Real 2K Insider rosters, which, unfortunately, seem to only be found on PS3) and the purist's sliders although again, we here on the PC are still pre-patch so when (if) it comes, you'll probably have to tweak again.

As far as Purists's sliders go though, I found you needed to up the scoring abilities by a point or so, or teams would regularly shoot 35-41% and too many games would end 92-80.

Thanks Pred, I'll check those out.

Just started a 7'5 All-Around Center, got my drills completed and then played my first draft combine game. 14 Points, 20 Rebounds (6 offensive), 2 blocks (1 sweet swap of Evan Turner), and 4 turnovers (2 three in the key and 2 balls being stripped after an offensive rebound). Finished with an A+ teammate approval rating and 1300 something points, I didn't get my defensive goal of forcing 2 turnovers, but I did get 1.

Yeah I think I might try a C or PF for my next My Player.

I did multiple seasons of SG in 2k10 and now doing it again, although I split time at PG a lot, is feeling very familiar. Think I need to change things up a bit and work down in the post. Maybe I should go to the Spurs and be Duncan's replacement-in-training, like he was for the Admiral.

You're going to hell.

Well, that's maybe a little dire. But if you plan on playing online, people might quit out on you as soon as they see your size. It's considered cheap.

Glad to see another big-man though, most people prefer dancing around the perimeter to banging around inside.

(My PF is jealous of my new SG who is scoring 19+ per game only 7 into his rookie year)
